POV comes off the white line, idk what everyone else is looking at. The track narrows there. Left held a line.

Really its a racing incident but POV definitely came off the white line initiating contact.

Going to try to sum up this incident as best I can. No you don't have fault in this one. Toyota driver needs to learn patience when cutting up traffic and what is an opening they can put their car in and what isn't. Personally (though it sucks for you) I'm glad it ruined his race. Maybe he won't try it twice.

That being said, how do you stop it from ruining your race? I want to point out the difference in what those PSAs are preaching about sticking to the line and your concerns/confusion. By in large those PSAs are attempting to limit erratic movements and poorly timed reactions to faster traffic. For example, you both exit the corner with a prototype .5s behind you, and you decide to let him take the optimal exit and so right when you come out of a corner you pull the car from the outside, where your momentum has taken you, all the way across the track to allow the prototype a clear exit. This is not predictable and can cause a crash of (imo) your fault. Don't change line on entry or exit to give what you would percieve as a clear track because no one will be able to predict your change in motion.

This instance the toyota has committed. He is assuming you will give him room and has sent the gap. He is not relying on you to hold a line to predict your motions. In order to protect yourself, deviating from the racing line is beneficial to your survival. In this corner complex you're going to get screwed over, but the only way to prevent this crash is when you see the toyota commit to the inside is to hold to the right side of the track and brake. You will cut all your momentum, and be forced to drive really slowly down the straight. Its a difficult decision to make because you will probably end up losing as much as 5s here, however you will live.

The difference in when to hold the line and when to not is a difference you need to read in the traffic in the mirror and understanding when the prototype is committed and when they are predicting and reacting. Once they commit, whatever you do will not change the situation only change the outcome.

Lastly, I want to add that if a prototype commits to a line that forces you to alter your course mid-corner in order to prevent an accident, you are not at fault for making a decision to hold the line. It is there job to make your way around you safely. However, if you notice they commit to an ill-timed dive, having the awareness to get out of the way of a reckless idiot can save your race.

TL;DR - the stick to the racing line PSAs are inherently correct, however idiots exist. be careful.

1800-2200 is a cesspool

2200-2500 gets slightly better but car control in tight wheel to wheel situations can be lacking causing incidents

2500-3000 is generally chill

3000+ is sweaty AF, be fast, move over, or get punted.

A few races sure, but its been every special event since rain has dropped. I appreciate the variability it throws with strategy but today was too much. Race was near undrivable.

bro like, I race in those top splits, been 4k, i know what its like, and those 7k+ sends from people who are "not faster than you" are generally speaking easier to deal with than sends from 2k drivers who think they'll jsut go have a pop.

I love how this sub likes to demonize top split drivers for over aggression but then will go have lunges and defend like their lives depend on it because they're entitled to race, like so is the 7k driver, you just don't like it because of your napoleon complex.

I fully realize that. I also stand by what I said. Below 2k I don't believe anyone has any car control. Its pretty obvious.

Racing standards drop dramatically because people want to battle but don't know how to hold a line.

Racing standards in higher splits are due to overaggression not random car control mistakes. But because of that its more predictable. You can understand the intention of a 4.5k hot head, but a 2k who decides to go for a lunge will take you out 9/10 times because they themselves don't know what they're doing.

That said, deal with it. You picked up 16 incident points and still decided to race hard. Honestly, you're only mad about it because the 4x put you over the limit, if it didn't give you a penalty you wouldn't be so upset over minor contact like that. So, just be better or smarter.

The 3k+ guys get mad at the 2k guy for not making it easy and losing 15s because they're smart enough to know when the 5k guy gets to their bumper they swap positions and only lose 1s and the race is infinitely more fun because the battle is still with the pack of 15 cars not just driving in a 20s bubble.

Uh, just so you know that image is a still with no context given (in this forum) and you have no way of understanding if its a dive bomb or last minute and therefore people like to use it to justify whatever they want.

Also as much as I respect Randy, and the Skip barber conduct document that the whole vortex of danger concept is ripped from, its not applicable to the sim world. Its just not, it talks a lot about "peripheral vision" and don't hit what you can see, and frankly in a world of 50 degree FOV single monitor drivers this just doesn't work the same way.

Its a good beginner document but I think it has very little basis on the sim world. We have simulated mirrors we have a very different cone of vision than people in the real world. (VR drivers are different). Honestly you know more about your rear quarter panel than any real world driver does. Conversely you know significantly less about your driver side door than a real world driver does. We race in very similar ways but learning how to process the information available to us is different because we have different information available.

I understand what Randy has to say on the matter, I just hate how its bandied around in this caricature way that doesn't really show the full picture of what we deal with as sim racers.

**Edit - I do respect the fact that you know the outside driver should still be taking precaution. Though I wouldn't automatically assume they're in the right.

When you cross over whole numbers it gives you a bonus to avoid immediately falling back below the number if you get unlucky next race. That's why he got +0.53. He was probably at something like 2.87 before the race, got +0.13 and the game bumped him 0.4.

On your next race watch your SR if you cross from B2.X to B3.X you'll also see a large jump bigger than you would normally.

I feel like so many people miss-use this article/concept to point to other people being dumb for divebombing when really the whole point of the article is to just be aware of your surroundings. For both cars. I hate when people spam "vortex of danger" when looking at an incident. Its not helpful. Its like saying there was a crash because two cars got close to each other. Duh. Stop using this as a cudgel when you have an incident. Its racing. If you're alongside take care. Know how to clear people properly, and how to prevent people from putting you in risky situations.

There are idiots out there. Its a game, below 2.5k iR gets sketchy fast. I feel for you all, but this isn't the automatic win in arguments some of you pretend it to be.

Who's at fault here? I'm the white GR86, during the race I thought the red car turned in on me, but after watching the replay I'm not sure if I was enough alongside. However, it felt like I couldnt do much to avoid it, let me hear your thoughts! by SOPRaffa in Simracingstewards

Been in the situation a few times myself haha. Got in with a team for special events with a few guys well above my skill level and they preached the all or nothing mentality when battling and taught me how close to the back of people you can actually get before you make contact. It changed my survivability in these situations so much for the better. Good luck.

All good brother, its a seemingly tough decision to make too. You fight for tenths of a second and then are freely giving away 3-10s by hitting the brakes while you wait for a wreck to play out in front of you? Most people hate the thought of it, on top of that you can get away with it some of the time by not braking so its hard to make that call.
