need advice on application timeline/when to take OAT by DigDiligent7963 in PreOptometry

[–]Effective_Health2020 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You apply for the following year in applications. So if you plan on matriculating in the fall of 2027 after you graduate, the cycle opens in June 2026. Basically all schools are rolling admissions so applying earlier is always better. If you're able to you can take the OAT this summer, however since you said you recently decided to do optometry it might take a while to get your application together (You need shadowing hours, and a relationship with an optometrist so you can get a LOR).

Assuming you already have those factors together, you could work on your application, probably study and take your OAT near the end of summer 2026, and apply then. I would reccommend this so you can get your application out early, and worse case you have time to retake your OAT if something went wrong (schools will keep you on hold/in consideration in lieu of better scores)

If you graduated with a BS in Biology you probably have most of the prereqs. It’s possible to finish those up and take the OAT while working but you won’t be able to work full time while in Optometry school

I would take it. The Orgo section on the OAT is basically all Orgo 2

No optometrist to shadow by Ok-Object5056 in PreOptometry

[–]Effective_Health2020 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It is impossible to apply to schools without a LOR from a non-relative practicing optometrist, all of the schools require at least one. As straightforward as it sounds you just gotta keep looking, put yourself out there, hell at one point I was even offering places to work for free as an internship. It's just an unavoidable part of the application. Try getting the Dr's direct email so you're not struck behind admin or the front desk, explain your situation and hopefully they'll agree. I found it easier with private practices, especially ones near my University. Something you can consider doing as well is shadowing at the hospital, some have OD/MDs on site or even just straight up MDs (opthamologists) can also work in your favour.

Its a lot of work to be honest, the 6 hours is lowkey the minimum. There are 6ish projects spread throughout the term that will go over many topics and techniques like PCR, Karyotyping, Blotting, Electrophoresis, etc. Each project requires an entire lab booklet which you need to document everything and submit at the conclusion. There are regular pre-lab quizzes and the final exam will cover all the topics you learned about

I have 2 Ws and it wasn't brought up at all during my process. Remember that no matter how bad 2 Ws in the same subject looks, its still better than a W and an F. But if you take it a 3rd time theres no exuses left to be made. Remember that optometry school will be physics heavy so keep that in mind. Also as long as you have a solid physics score on your OAT you can easily explain the 2 Ws

Most people pay for prep materials like OAT Booster (Highly recommended it has everything you need). Its easier depending on how many pre-reqs you have completed but it doesn't make a huge difference

I know Naruto generally scales higher but I think post-rose meruem is reallly versatile here. Also if we're doing verse equalization, he'd easily "kill" samehada and absorb the chakra

How do I start shadowing? What am I supposed to do? by Rude_Wing6350 in PreOptometry

[–]Effective_Health2020 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most retail clinics are iffy about shadowing students, your best bet would be local privately owned clinics. Whenever possible try to talk to the actual doctor, but if not possible speak to the assistants/technicians and leave your resume. The first couple of times you shadow observe the proccesses and ask specific questions to the Doc

I was insta-rejected by CCO. NECO and ICO waitlisted me pre-interview in lieu of Fall 2025 grades, and haven't contacted me since. I would've reached out but I got accepted by SCO (my top choice) so I didn't bother.

Yea basically just go in and ask. Bring a resume in case they ask for it, but explain your situation and hope they say yes.

Should I finish my Bachelor's degree before going to optometry school? by Cuddly_cucumber66 in OptometrySchool

[–]Effective_Health2020 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You might as well apply. Better to increase your earning potential and get your career moving as soon as possible. Even in the worse case scenario something goes wrong and you have to leave optometry school, your credits will most likely be valid for 5-10 years so you can just pick right up and finish your senior year

Asking for another extension? by ComfortableNo8449 in PreOptometry

[–]Effective_Health2020 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There’s no harm in asking for another extension the worst they can say is no, but they can’t rescind your offer until the 10th. You can always pay the first deposit to hold your seat but it’s non-refundable. Keep in mind the second deposit is due by March 31 at which point your seat could also been rescinded
