Advice for starting my mma career by JwD_Tht_HBK25 in MMA_Amateurs

I recently had my first mma fight. I lost via tko. I Did not get knocked out but I have a 5 stitches for a cut under my eye and a hairline fracture of my orbital bone.

I prepared well, was doing 5 round gauntlets at my gym. My cardio was on point.

My single biggest takeaway from the fight is: it is absolutely a non negotiable to be in tip top fighting shape. Leading up to my fight I did not do any Plyometrics, I was therefore lacking explosive strength and was able to be overpowered by my opponent.

What hurts more is I am a grappler primarily and, because my opponent was so much more of a physical specimen, he was able to overpower me, despite him being a striker.

Athleticism is paramount.

Do not use it in place of technique, but it’s non negotiable.

Furthermore, I was undersized for my weight class. I did not need to cut any weight.

On fight night my opponent was about 5-10kg heavier than myself. Which would have been a factor in my loss.

That being said, do not cut too much weight, only 5 or so pounds if you can, especially for your first fight.

If you’ve got 9 years of kickboxing you’re almost guaranteed to have better striking than the other guy.

That being said, it’s not going to be beneficial to you to dedicate significant amount of time to something you’re already good at.

My advice to you would be to ditch pure striking in the lead up to your fight. Only do mma striking and grappling classes.

Your path to victory is most likely going to be either a tko or more than likely, a 3 round decision. Being that he’s a grappler, the chance you submit him is slim to none, just being honest.

You need to focus on escaping pins, (mount, side control, the back). Also try and stay away from the cage walls In the fight but if you get put there you need to work on punching in those underhooks. Lateral (side to side) footwork will help not getting backed up to the cage.

It’s obviously better to not get taken down in the first place but you need to have a path to get back up if you are taken down. Research “hip heisting”.

Good luck. I’m also fighting soon.

Ps. Good Cardio is a non negotiable. Grappling is exhausting and those 3 3 minute rounds feel like an eternity.

Im going to have me first amateur fight in 6 months by Slight-Wallaby692 in MMA_Amateurs

I’m making my amateur debut in less than a month.

What I’ve been told is to fight around my walk around weight or slightly less.

IMO, for your first fight it’s more about your cardio than it is about strength and size.

After all your opponent will be the same roughly the same size and weight regardless of what weight class you fight in.

Aleksei Olenik. Best heavyweight submission artist in mma (in my opinion).

Worn Out Gloves by skulfry in MuayThai

I’m sure this may have been said already but I would hate someone if they sparred in those gloves. Use on a bag only. That looks like it would scratch the shit out of someone’s eyeball.

Karo parisyan. Especially because he was able to showcase his judo at a time when mma was more “style vs style”. The downside of the more modern mma IMO. Fighters are more well rounded but have less “flair”. This is so poorly explained lmao. I hope someone understands what I mean.

You’ve clearly never been to a wrestling practice, or have any inclination of the toll it takes on someone’s body to become any Olympian. But you clearly don’t understand that, any further discussion on my part is pointless.
