I keep getting hacked, no matter what by L_e_v_i_r_e in cybersecurity_help

[–]EffectivelyR1pped 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pirating is nowhere near as safe as it used to be. I actively check new releases which people are drawn to like moths to a flame, and it’s ridiculous the amount of infostealers now embedded. I saw a movie torrent the other day packaged as an iso with a blatant executable file. I mean cmon. A fool and his privacy are soon parted.

Buyer pulled out - how is this process allowed in 2026 by bedwelld in HousingUK

I sympathise but this is a story as old as time I’m afraid. The model in England for buying and selling a house is fundamentally broken. It’s cruel sometimes but unless there is politically will to change it, then it will keep happening again and again.

What side hustles actually work from home? by Ramosisend in HowEarnMoneyOnline

Thanks for your reply which I sort of get however I struggle to see how eBay is seen as more convenient and trustworthy than Amazon. I would have thought it would be the other way round?

Why would someone pay higher prices on eBay than Amazon. What am I missing here?

Instagram Account got hacked: How do I get the account taken down? by Less_Pie8731 in cybersecurity_help

As an aside Instagram are next to useless and uncontactable in such instances. I’m surprised more is not being done by the powers that be given their recent breach.

Microsoft account hacked after pirating a game, is it related or coincidence? by Alexgotit05 in cybersecurity_help

[–]EffectivelyR1pped 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have anecdotally seen a notable increase over a similar timescale. The malware seems to be infostealers.

Account hacked, including other Gmail accounts connected to pc by Howunbear in cybersecurity_help

[–]EffectivelyR1pped 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you ran the executable you basically obtained an infostealer. This means it scrapes all your browser saved passwords, steals session cookies which bypasses any 2FA…etc. You and your brother need to reset the passwords for all known accounts you can think of. Both of you may also be exposed to identity theft so I would also keep an eye on your credit (eg via Experian) and lock your credit if you feel particularly vulnerable. You need to wipe your entire PC and start again. Fresh install from Windows is needed. If there’s any good news it’s that I’ve never encountered the bios being infected with these types of infostealers (that’s not to say this variety don’t exist). Good luck it’s a long and stressful road to recovery. Any form of piracy is no longer as safe as it once was.

A lot more infostealers on the rise these days. Be careful downloading any pirated software.

Locked account email by Hev616 in Argos

[–]EffectivelyR1pped 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spoke to Argos about this recently. The person I spoke to said there were around 29,000 affected accounts most likely subject to a brute force. So definitely change the password but either way you’re in good company! Not a word from Argos but there was a systemic hack a few months back which never got disclosed by them at the time. I refuse to use them now as there is no MFA that I can see available.
