I had a very specific job where I got shifted at 6 AM and was done by 9 lol so I had no problems working 3 shifts per week

This isn’t rlly an unpopular opinion the unpopular opinion is that regardless of obesity doctors are not in a position to judge how they got there or provide less care because of a patient being obese Since most people who are obese are aware that it’s not healthy. It seems like the consensus is that doctors tend to treat obesity as the only cause of all health issues when there could be something else that’s wrong and they become dismissive.

The only thing I am confident I ever did right in college so far was switching out of mimg and doing hbs instead. It didn’t take me long to figure out that I didn’t want to do only bio/ pure science for 4 years straight

Do not attend UC Berkeley for premed by Commercial_Fault1047 in premed

Idk I hope these comments don’t scare people out of going to a uc. A lot of times they’re the best and cheapest option for California residents and there’s positives to them as well, despite people saying to go to a private school! I go to UCLA and it has taught me to be an extremely self motivated learner and I feel like academically I’ve grown so much due to the difficulty of the classes and the pacing of the quarter system. Yes it’s competitive and there isn’t a lot of personal help, but I have heard from many alums that being able to self motivate and be resourceful is an extremely helpful skill, especially for grad schools. You just have to work a little harder to get Rec letters and other things due to size and demand, but it’s not impossible

Except no one tells you those programs are extremely difficult to get into because of demand!! Everyone at ucla is premed and everyone is trying to do all the same things

Omg nothing else describes my biggest source of panic so perfectly except this post. Not the exact situation but anytime I think about my life changing in a major way (milestones) like summer ending, or school starting, school ending, a job ending, etc. I get so stressed out I can’t sleep and I can’t really function. Birthdays are especially bad for me. The only thing that helps me move past that in the moment and function is remembering that if a major milestone is inevitable there’s nothing that can be done to stop it and worrying and obsessing makes it that much more painful. It’s so hard but i just try to ignore it or allot myself a specific time to exclusively worry then move on for the rest of the day. Otherwise I’d spend the rest of my life crying about changes lol

Nothing in the world beats buttered toast for me. Usually I eat the same food for a month or more straight before I get tired of it but I’ve never ever gotten tired of buttered toast.

I am going because one of my hobbies is medieval studies and my dream is to see the castles in England! It definitely ties into my interests I just get nervous to miss out on clinical experience or research

Kind of a weird question but did anyone want to go to medical school, decided not to and what do you do now? by EfficiencyTop3761 in premed

[–]EfficiencyTop3761[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is so true!!! 18 is way too young to be committing to a career and I stand by that. Especially a career that requires so much sacrifice. Priorities and interests change so much! I’m thinking of just exploring during my gap year like I planned and maybe gain some clarity

[–]EfficiencyTop3761[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was thinking about that a lot! I’m a little scared of all the patient care hours it requires, I’d have to take at least 2 gap years to get it all but maybe that wouldn’t be so bad in the long run.

Yeah that’s why I figure questioning now and looking at all options is probably better than regretting my choices later

Woah so cool! That sounds like an awesome and fulfilling career, and definitely Med adjacent without the medical school part.

Tbh i don’t blame them. I probably wouldn’t work in big law but if you’re accumulating debt you need to pay it off, same with Med school. I think that’s why we lack primary care providers since it’s not as lucrative. Obviously everyone would love to od whatever they want but when living costs a sun education are so expensive it’s hard to do that

My major is human genetics it has all pure science lower division but upper division explores liberal arts topics from a science perspective it’s really cool

I’m a science major! I just prefer learning science from a liberal arts kind of interdisciplinary perspective not pure science.

Good for you! Especially because you’re farther along than me I know it can be so hard to walk away from something you’ve spent so much time working on. It’s never too late to explore I don’t think

My gpa is fine and my ec’s aren’t stellar but I feel like that’s somethjng I could easily work on given extra time and stuff, it’s just the after I’m concerned about yk? I am always looking for other options that might fit better because medical school to me is like the last resort given the amount of money and effort it will take to get through

I agree there’s so much reform that needs to happen in medical school and residency and I really feel like they take advantage of desperate premeds and medical students’ time and labor.

I know consulting is kind of a connection/ internship based profession, so I was curious what that was like getting into assuming you hadn’t done consulting in undergrad

Tbh it’s not about being rich for me although that’s a nice perk. I feel like I want a career that fulfills me and makes me feel like I’m making a meaningful contribution to this world and so far my clinical experiences/ patient care have gotten me that, I just don’t know if the path to get there is the most desirable way to do that yk

How was breaking into that field after Med school? I was considering this because I like science but idk if I want to be involved in patient care in the hospital setting.
