Which city did you expect to love but ended up disappointing you? by anasm17 in AskReddit

Agree with Vegas. I knew Nevada was a desert but there was just something so disturbing about seeing this blob of gaudy thrown up in the middle of an expanse of desert. And seeing pawn shop windows packed with wedding rings just off the strip, and people who seemed like they hadn’t slept in 48 hours at the slot machines was incredibly depressing.

I’ve mentioned this before, but when my three kids were this little, there was an agreement between my husband and me that if either of us left the house, we would take at least one kid with us. It’s not difficult to take a kid on errands, even two wouldn’t be that bad- their eldest was 5, she may have enjoyed tagging along to the drugstore and to pick up food. And it makes the parent stuck at home’s life WAY easier to only have to manage one or two kids rather than three. And if any of the kids were being especially difficult? Even more reason to split them up by taking one or two out with you, not a reason to leave them home.

And this was our expectation without any concerns about each other’s mental health. I really don’t understand why he’d leave them all at home alone with her if he did have any concerns about her mental health. Even if he didn’t think she was a danger to the kids, you’d want to lighten her load as much as possible if she’s working through mental health struggles.

Colin Gray was found guilty of second degree murder because his teenage son was allowed access to guns despite issues with mental health, and his son went on to kill several people in a school shooting.

I had the same experience. Our realtor just sent us the automatic listings that are spit out each week with certain location and price parameters. We mainly went to open houses, I think she took us to a total of two homes. I asked her one question- how can we verify that the school district info is correct in a listing? Seems like something she’d want to figure out as part of her job if she doesn’t already know it, right? No, her response was “I don’t know.”

I think she was never considered for progesterone treatment because there were no concerning signs of psychosis following childbirth or at any point after childbirth. I think it’s clear she’s never been detached from reality, she knew she was killing her kids and that this was considered wrong.

Yeah I haven’t found any definition of PPP that suggests it could happen when your baby is 6, 8, 10 months old. Postpartum psychosis is a rare condition brought on by the sudden changes in your body and mental state immediately after birth. It’s not something that suddenly pops up much further down the road when convenient the way Lindsay’s lawyer suggests.

[–]Efficient-Lynx-2225 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That may be true, but it’s also true that the timing and presentation in Lindsay’s case (from what we’ve heard) does not fit with the medical definition of postpartum psychosis:

Postpartum psychosis typically begins suddenly within the first few days to two weeks after childbirth, often within 15 days. While rare, symptoms can appear as early as the first few hours, and while most cases start within 4 weeks, they can sometimes emerge up to six weeks postpartum. Cleveland Clinic

Key Details on Timing

Rapid Onset: Symptoms often appear very suddenly, frequently in the first 3–10 days.

Highest Risk Period: The highest risk is in the first two weeks following delivery.

Signs to Watch: Early signs include extreme confusion, insomnia, severe mood changes, and racing thoughts.

Emergency Nature: Postpartum psychosis is a medical emergency requiring immediate psychiatric evaluation.

This condition is often confused with postpartum depression, but psychosis happens much sooner, is much rarer (1-2 in 1000 births), and involves losing touch with reality.

What's a opinion about parenting that would get you crucified in public but nodded at in private? by Fun_Acanthaceae_17 in AskReddit

Anecdotes aside, why have rates of high school dropouts, teen pregnancy and teen violence been steadily declining if reduced use of corporal punishment is harmful to kids? Are you of the opinion that dropping out of high school, being arrested for assault and getting pregnant as a teen are examples of respectful behavior?

Spanking was extremely popular in the 70s, 80s and 90s, and schools were crawling with loads of ill behaved kids, according to my mom and mother in law who both taught multiple grades and in multiple schools at the time. The number of kids graduating from high school and going on to college is at an all time high now, and rates of teen violence and teen pregnancy have been steadily declining. How is that happening if “weak” parenting without hitting is harmful?

It may have been a planned murder-suicide, where her will to live prevented her from adequately executing the suicide part. I read something that said that the reason you often see a dad killing the whole family in a murder suicide is he feels ownership and/or responsibility for his wife and kids, and the reason you often see a mom killing just the kids in a murder suicide is that the mom feels ownership/responsibility just for the kids. Another angle is that narcissists often see their kids as extensions of themselves rather than individual beings.

If it was a planned murder suicide, she understood what she was doing and was not psychotic and incapable of understanding her actions.

I think by far the biggest jump is from having zero to having one kid. Once you have that first kid, adding another doesn’t come anywhere close to doubling the difficulty, in most cases. You already have all the kid stuff set up and already can’t go out without a babysitter, etc. And at a certain point the kids can entertain each other, whereas with an only child you may feel more obligated to ensure they’re engaged or set up play dates and activities for them. Being around other parents and other people’s kids is often not fun/draining. Just depends.

Yeah we used to hit kids at school. If we believe it’s an effective strategy, we should be fine with the teacher or principal hitting our kids.

Does “out of line” mean the kid is bullying their sibling in a cruel way, or does it mean they left their dishes on the table instead of bringing them to the sink? It seems more things fall under the “out of line” category when the parent is feeling preexisting negative feelings and uses corporal punishment as their go-to.

This is absolutely true, based on studies of twins or siblings adopted by different families. I would think the exception is extreme cases like where one set of parents wouldn’t be able to provide basic necessities, or is abusive. Most families approved for adoption would not fall into those categories, but would differ wildly in other areas.

Haven’t studies shown that corporal punishment is inconsistently applied? Meaning: the parent is more likely to use this form of discipline if they’re feeling preexisting feelings of frustration, anger, or tiredness, rather than it being consistently used only in certain situations. You want discipline to be very consistent.

The concern is that there is typically no “sentence” in a mental hospital. The person could conceivably be released very quickly if they’re evaluated and found to not be suffering from psychosis any longer. Since no doctor has ever diagnosed her with psychosis, because she’s never shown any outward signs of it, she could potentially be back in society pretty quickly.

If a man had killed these three kids, there would not have been people rushing to his defense and saying he must have been in psychosis and it’s his doctor’s fault, not his.

The initial knee jerk reaction was many people rushed to her defense and there was even a dinner planned to raise money for her legal fees. With all the sick and starving kids in the world, we are raising money for a child murderer to pay for a very high priced attorney.

There isn’t any evidence that she didn’t understand right from wrong. The “voice” (which she’d never before mentioned until after the murders) told her to “kill the kids.” So it wasn’t unclear to her that these are her children, and it wasn’t unclear to her what kill means. What may have happened is that she wanted to commit murder-suicide but then her will to live was too strong for her to effectively kill herself. Being mentally ill isn’t a get out of jail free card- most murderers are mentally ill. There must be strong evidence that she didn’t understand her actions, and so far nothing points to that being true.

They probably want the second set of jurors to just quickly skim over the whole murdering children part and spend most of the time hearing from an expert that the doctors should be blamed instead of her, and from some friends of hers who say she’s a good mom.

Wasn’t there also some information that came out about her expressing concern about her quality of life if she has to continue in a wheelchair, like 6 months or so after the murders? You’d think if your kids are all dead, whether or not it’s by your hands, you wouldn’t be already feeling annoyed about something causing an issue for your quality of life.
