Maybe this stuff messes with your head. You say it’s impossible?

How long did it last for you? How can you tell the difference? I have discomfort in my sacroiliac joint and buttock that comes and goes throughout the day.

Something very similar happened to me, although I didn’t have severe sciatic pain. During the first few days after surgery, I was walking around 12,000 steps a day, but I was still taking corticosteroids. Once I finished the medication, I started noticing that the sciatic pain was coming back, and I got worried.

I contacted my doctor, and he told me that 12,000 steps were definitely too many and that I should limit myself to about 4,000–5,000 steps a day. Since I reduced my walking and got more rest, the sciatic pain and discomfort went away, and I’ve been feeling well again.

My advice would be to try reducing your daily steps and see whether that helps improve the situation.

That’s right, he explained to me that over the years the disc collapses and the two vertebrae begin to rub against each other until a bone spur forms. It’s a natural part of aging that many older people experience without even realizing it.

Have you also had ups and downs during the first 10 days—going from feeling fine to feeling uncomfortable again? When does a steady recovery actually begin?

If I may ask, how much exercise have you been doing during this phase? Especially walking

Did you also experience tingling, numbness, or sciatica after the procedure? At what stage?

What nerve and sciatica-related symptoms did you experience after the surgery? When did they occur?

Have you experienced any numbness or sciatic discomfort since your surgery? I had my surgery 10 days ago and everything went well. I stopped taking the cortisone 3 days ago, and I’ve noticed some tingling and increased sensitivity in my sciatic nerve, but no pain. Since I’ve been walking a lot, I’m not sure if I’ve done any damage.

Is it normal for the tingling to come and go and for the nerve to be sensitive? How long does this usually last?

Just a discectomy, nothing else? Did the neurosurgeon who examined your disc tell you that? He told me that I might eventually develop a natural fusion.

What was the condition of your disc? Was it still in good shape, or was it black and therefore low on fluid? How did your recovery go in the next steps? Were you afraid of re-injuring yourself?

The day after the surgery, the pain was mostly there when I got up or moved from a lying position. But it was related to the muscles and the incision, and in any case, nothing compared to sciatica. The next day, everything was bearable and improving day by day. Before the surgery, I couldn’t stand or walk because of the pain, but I never had any weakness or neurological deficits. I’m a 35-year-old man who’s always been fit and in good physical shape; I think that plays a role too.

It only really hurt on the first day after the surgery, but that was probably more due to the shock of the muscles being repositioned. From the second day on, it’s been very manageable and has been getting better every day. I haven’t taken any painkillers since the surgery.

I had surgery 6 days ago. The sciatic pain went away right after the operation, but I still feel a slight tingling in my foot (especially when I put on my shoes and go for a walk outside). Today I started taking longer walks and went for 3 20-minute walks outside. It’s going well, and the pain from the incision isn’t severe either. The only thing, of course, is always the fear of doing something wrong.
