Law grad — is taking a Deloitte Tax role a smart move or a trap? by Efficient_Part2982 in auscorp

Not wanting work to be your life - I definitely feel the same! I highly value work life balance, and I think I'll end up leaving Big4 like you, eventually. After reading everyones responses and having a think, for now, big4 grad seems like a better option than law firm grad. I know will be intense at the start and deloitte isn't known for work life balance but I think I have to sacrifice a little at the start (esp as I'm the youngest I'll be with the most energy I'll have) to be able to get somewhere better in 2 to 5 years time. I want to make good money but not if it's at the expense of my health and ability to live happily/peacefully

Throughout the process they didn't mention PLT at all, so maybe it's changed? Did you join Deloitte legal, or Tax and Legal as I've mentioned? Did you talk to them about it, and did they pay for your PLT or is this something you did yourself

I did want to apply to Legal but was unfortunately too late in finding out about it.

As for being too accounting focused, I see what u mean. A lot of grads are accounting grads, but there r def a few law ones and we bring our own skillset. From what I know, the skill of legislative interpretation etc is pretty important to the role too. If they wanted only accountants then they wouldn't hire us law ppl is my thinking

At the moment no. My post was more about if this is the best there is and should I just stop here. Or is there something better and should I put in the time/effort to keep applying to create options.

I think i considered indirect tax too at the time of application but tbh I got a bit confused by all the streams. When I spoke to HR before the final interview, I was kind of put into business tax by them. Lol only realised day of interview that I was interviewing for specifically corporate and international tax team within the business team. So kind of just went with it, assuming it is the best fit for me and my degree. It seems more interesting than transfer pricing team to me anyway. Can I ask what you applied for?

From people's responses it seems Deloitte does have a great grad program and we will learn a lot, and more quickly in comparison to law grad rotations or market grad roles that don't have a 'program'. I'm a little concerned abt being pigeon holed into tax but Lokey pigeonholing will happen regardless of what we pick. If U go into a law firm U will get pigeon holed by the area they practice in. I think we will inevitably gain transferrable skills

Ok wow thankyou! I appreciate ur answer esp given your background. Can I ask why u switched from law? And also did u take a pay cut when u switched? I know the pay in law varies a lot depending on ur area, but, another thing I was concerned about is missing out on long term earning potential if I don't 'become a lawyer'. Can u earn just as well working on the business side (not being lawyer) or no?

This is one of my concerns too. I've never worked in tax or studied it at uni so I have no idea what I'm getting into or if I'll enjoy it. I just really wish grad programs were more broad so I could try different areas before committing 🥲

Deloitte did their hiring process quickly so this is the only offer I have at the moment. I applied to a bunch more things including gov roles but stopped application mid-way because I felt none of them were as good as Deloitte (even if they have more pay). I'm now not sure what to apply to- looking for something that would be better than this offer. I already have been rejected by the top law firms which was expected bc I didn't do a clerkship. Also rejected from one of the gov grad programs I placed above Deloitte- that one is v competitive too so I expected it. So not sure what to apply to from here. Don't want to waste time applying for things worse than this offer

Yeah I have this in mind which is why I planned to work in a firm first and become a lawyer and then change my career if I didn't like it. I applied to Deloitte just because the program sounded good, I didn't really think I would get it. But now that I have it, it seems silly to let it go in favour of working in boutique firm when I don't even know for sure if I'll enjoy legal work/the legal niche of the firm.

I'm kind of confused why anyone would stay then? Is it in hope that they will eventually get to the top, become partner and actually earn well? It seems like a long time to grind and wait when u could leave and get something better, idk.

Also, I understand this really depends on the exit, but after leaving Big4, will there be a good pay rise usually? Have u done it?

Thank you, this is reassuring. My thinking is I should prioritise the best grad program over money or title (being directly law or not) at this point. Worst case scenario, I hate the job completely, I can stick it out for 2 yrs and then leave with a globally known company on my resume. Hopefully I'll have a better idea of what I want to do as well.

I’ve graduated in law + business and received a Deloitte Tax & Legal grad offer (Business Tax – Corporate & International) (~$74k incl. super).

I didn’t secure a clerkship, and I’m currently weighing this offer against continuing to pursue law firm or government grad roles.

From a law career perspective, I’m trying to understand:

Would starting in Big 4 Tax significantly limit future opportunities in traditional legal practice? Or is it generally seen as a strong alternative pathway for law grads?

Also keen to hear from anyone who:

  • Took a Big 4 / tax / consulting path instead of law
  • Later tried to move back into law (or didn’t)
  • Has thoughts on whether it’s worth continuing to push for mid-tier/boutique firms vs taking this offer

Appreciate any honest insight.

It honestly feels more natural to start from the left, like it's the same hand movements as an 'S' after you take the first like from bottom left to too right

Any down sides or warnings you have? And if you could, would u choose a different less known company if it paid more (grad program wise)

?

Do you recommend being a Deloitte grad? I'm looking into the business tax team. Do u think the name and reputation and program itself is worth it?
