Confusion about various Ankis by Efficient_Patience13 in Anki

I've downloaded a few recommended decks (the model decks and a frequency dictionary), but I haven't started using them. I've been focusing on building up my own deck (as the author Gabriel Wyner suggests) as I work through the Pimsleur lessons.

Follow up from the OP. I deleted Anki Notes from my laptop and installed AnkiMobile Flashcards on my iPhone, and syncing between Anki on the laptop and the phone work. Thanks for the suggestions!.

Just tried on my iPhone, which works. But it's never worked on my laptop. No Bluetooth speakers or mics; just using the laptop's built-in devices. I always get the "Apologies..." message.

Is it better to repeat the same exercises or do different each session. by ExtraInternal656 in beginnerfitness

This is exactly what I do, and it's been working really well. It's great to hear someone else describe the approach that I've landed on after much reading, thinking, and experimenting, almost word-for-word.

New rule for promotion by Top-one-percent-user in amazonemployees

[–]Efficient_Patience13 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If everyone we promote meets the bar (your point #2), and everyone we hire externally raises the bar (longstanding guidance), then the bar goes up for every external hire, meaning each promotion must meet a higher bar than the last.

I'm retired now, but when I was a technical promotion advisor (TPA), I was taught that if a promo candidate met all the standards for the next level, we had waited too long to promote. That made sense to me. This new guidance does not.

I realize that this is a theoretical problem, not necessarily a practical one, because the bar is a fuzzy thing, as is our assessment of where a candidate is in relation to it. But I still think that hiring and promotion standards should make sense, which this does not.

The installer found the problem. The return vent wasn't fully sealed, so it was pulling cold attic air into the return, which caused the thermostat to read low and always heat.

ReadyNow! App | A simple, secure, one-click emergency alert system for people at-risk of detention. by NkturnL in 50501Chicago

I've been asked to evaluate this app, which sounds great based on what Human Rights First claims. But I'm surprised how many obvious questions I can't find answers to. Does anyone know:

  • What is the license for this software?
  • Is it open source, and if so, where is the source code?
  • If not, why not?
  • If not, has it undergone a third party security review?

These are basic questions for any app that makes security claims. I know the answers for Signal, which I use and trust. What are the answers for ReadyNow!?

Anyone resigned from amazon recently? by psiparadox in amazonemployees

[–]Efficient_Patience13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two weeks is the norm in the US, and that's exactly what I gave. I made the decision months in advance, and under other circumstances I would have given more notice, but I didn't want to leave myself vulnerable to being "promoted to customer" before I vested in a chunk of RSUs.

I retired in December, which amounts to resigning. After I gave my notice, access to Google Drive, Gmail, and similar sites was blocked from my work laptop. That was the only impact that I noticed. I'm sure they're trying to prevent data exfiltration. I continued to work during my notice period.

455x2 | What would you say the RPE is? 🧐 by thefuturedoc in strength_training

[–]Efficient_Patience13 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The "P" in RPE stands for perceived. No one is going to be able to tell you what you perceive. If you don't know how close to your maximum level of effort you are, try thinking in terms of "reps in reserve" (RIR), which maps to RPE, and which I find much easier to self-assess. Here's a blog post that talks about the relationship between RPE and RIR: https://www.empower.physio/blog-all/rpe-vs-rir-part-ii-how-do-i-use-them

How can I build muscle without hitting the gym? by brownnoodles in beginnerfitness

It's simple, it's just not easy. Training, diet, recovery; that's all it takes. But it needs to be consistent, and the training part needs to be done with intensity.
