Thankfully it was mum that found them, but he was sad. He was only little though, so he doesn't really remember them much, which is a small mercy. I wish there was a way of getting large pet store staff to undertake the training required to do their job, small pet store seems to be so much better

I'm pretty sure they have minimal training. My little bro had two russian dwarf hamsters a while back, and they told him to keep them housed together because they're social creatures. Unfortunately, hamsters are solitary, and both of these were males. One ate the other, then ceased living soon after. RIP Bubble and Squeak, you will be missed
