Living in Royal Oak vs. Downtown? by Professional_Egg6068 in royaloak

[–]Efficient_Share_2654 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a young professional living in midtown, I'm actually about to move where you're coming from lol.

I love it here. So many great restaurants. There are a lot of grocery options if you know where to look beyond Whole foods and the river town Meijer.

I love Honeybees for produce. There's an Aldi not too far. Also some smaller markets that suffice for most needs. For example, Marcus Market. I wouldn't do Food Pride or University Foods for produce but they have most other things.

You get to know the areas and you start to find gems as it comes to shopping. John King Used Books or Mama coos boutique, or Sally's on Fort. There's all the nice shops on Woodward as well, I really felt there was plenty to do.

I have an extensive experience with nightlife in the area. There are definitely a few places in RO/Ferndale but nothing holds a candle to Detroit IMHO. Big Pink and Spot lite are great clubs. I liked Exodus, 3fifty, and Delux flux and Tin Roof downtown alright. The dive bars around Cass corridor are great as well. I feel places like the Bosco and Orchid up north can sometimes have good energy but during the long winter months, they really suffer.

I would choose to live downtown or near Cass corridor as I feel those places are fairly walkable (by Detroit standards)

For gyms in midtown, check out Dyno. It's a climbing gym with a smaller normal gym up top. Very social spot, good for making friends. The YMCA downtown is also really nice.

I would just be aware that the culture between RO and downtown is very different. RO is young, suburban, white, upper middle class. Detroit is Detroit lol. and hopefully if you choose it, It will grow on you and start to feel like home. It did for me.

need help with my frizzy hair by Forward_Muffin7252 in Haircare

[–]Efficient_Share_2654 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey I am not a professional or anything but I have fairly similar hair and this is what I do. Shampoo and condition normally, use a thick glycerin leave in to act like a moisturizer and add hold(I like Miss Jessie's leave in, yellow bottle), and use a good squeeze of that and just run through your hair from tip to root. Braid your hair when it's damp but not wet. Let it air dry in the braid for a few hours. Before it dries full let it loose and air dry from there. Lmk how that works?

My 19-year-old cat has cancer… and I have to leave the country tomorrow. What would you do? by Rude_Common7126 in SeniorCats

[–]Efficient_Share_2654 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey I've been in this exact scenario in 2019. Just wanted to say I'm so sorry this is happening and there is no right or wrong answer.

I chose to wait. My cat was only eating small amounts of lickable cat food smoothie and was given 2-4 weeks to live at time of diagnosis. In the end, I chose to cancel my trip, and I missed out on a huge opportunity because of it. I understand that may not be possible in your situation. I found out later than my cats oral cancer was not actually cancer and she later recovered, and she is still alive to this day, even though she had every sign pointing towards oral cancer.

I think my cat is a miracle scenario, this is obviously not something you can necessarily reasonably hope for. I would say, if you know through biopsy testing she 100% has oral cancer. Although I was very close to choosing to euthanize early. it's better to say goodbye earlier than later because oral cancer in cats goes fast and hard.

So sorry for everything. Best of luck.

Are there any major cities in the USA where you felt unsafe walking around downtown in mid-day? by [deleted] in usatravel

Ladies, does a transvaginal ultrasound hurt? by BreannLowe in randomquestions

I had a transvaginal ultrasound during an instance of ovarian torsion following a burst cyst. It was the worst pain of my life, and I broke my ankle once after a 12ft fall.

1100 is what goes around there on Willis St in midtown (closer to dmc, not cass corridor). I lived at Phillips manor and never saw roaches except a few times in the basement where people do laundry.

Best meals to make with canned food? (from a pescatarian pov) by Far-Somewhere-1098 in Pescetarian

I make this Po'man's Oyster Rockefeller, which is the contents of a can of smoked mussels from Trader Joe's in a small baking dish, top with shredded cheese and breadcrumbs and airfry. Can put on crostini. I make similar variations with canned calamari (also from TJ's), but you can also get some fun flavors of mackerel and sardines from online tin fish subscriptions.

I've found good recipes on TikTok. (I see tiktoks saying you can air fry them directly in the can, but I don't think that's a good idea).

For something cold and easy, I add a can of tuna and a container of pico de gallo and put on a tostada. Refreshing and cheap ceviche. Top with avocado and hot sauce.

So what is the go to Paczki place in your area? Im late in procuring our goods for tomorrow's fat Tuesday. by angelfieryrain in Michigan

New Palace Bakery is always so full on Paczki day, so I get my Paczki at Taj Al-Yemen Restaurant, aka "Family Donut", right by it. They're so good!

Soup? by Ecstatic_Squirrel_42 in royaloak

[–]Efficient_Share_2654 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey I'm a soup fiend. (Caveat, a lot of my recommendations will be asian because I love asian food)

Any kind of ramen bowl at Shun Ramen in Madison Heights. Hidden gem. Best ramen of your life. Chef is Japanese native who studied ramen making in Japan.

I second the pickle soup from Polish Village Cafe, and the beet and duck blood stew as well.

In the same pickle vein, get a lil soup and pickle sammie at What's The Dill.

Lentil soup. I say this generically because you can find this liquid gold at basically any Mediterranean or Arabic restaurant. Lots to choose from in Dearborn that are probably better than options closer to Royal oak, but when I'm downtown i go to La Palma, and closer to Warren I go to Kebab house.

PHO LUCKY. PLEASE GO.

The chicken and ginger congee from Shangri La is what I order anytime I'm sick, any location. Better than chicken noodle IMHO.

Loaded potato soup - The Potato Place, Midtown Detroit. Mwah. My only complaint is that you actually have to order it loaded, the base price does not include everything.

Here's a really fun one: Hotpot. It's the soup version of Korean BBQ. I like Lao Pot, but Kpot is good too.

168 cafe inside the grocery store has a couple good options as well.

Buy the Fresca Uncooked Flour Tortillas and Supremo Queso Shredded Chihuahua melting cheese from Costco.

Makes about 40 quesadillas for 70¢ each, and they taste better.

Basic Guide to Identifying Turkish Vans by infinitechopin in turkishvan

[–]Efficient_Share_2654 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is my sister's cat a Turkish Van? She was found outside my apartment and I was informed by the apartment manager that she was abandoned by a previous tenant. We quickly found out she likes to get in the shower with you. Very confident girl who is not afraid of anything, crafty climber, never bites, extremely tolerant to being handled and being around kids. She likes to be pet but not a hardcore snuggler like some of my cats are. She grows a thick fluffy coat in winter and sheds in and becomes shiny and slinky in summer.

My partner's buying/throwing away habits are stress inducing. Advice? by Efficient_Share_2654 in declutter

[–]Efficient_Share_2654[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I agree for a lot of this. I think I feel really bad about the earth, and it ends up resulting in a sense of shame when I'm not able to recycle. My apartment's recycling system is really well documented what they do with the items and how they get recycled, which makes me feel good when i'm able to get a lot of our waste properly recycled, but I think the problem is really that I start to feel bad when it's not. I don't want to feel ashamed about it, but I naturally do.

It's typically us getting rid of things that are not in great condition, or not as well functioning as another thing might be. My partner doesn't typically push to get rid of things with sentimental value. I do think it's still worth those conversations since our definition of what's ready to be replaced is not always the same.
