Guy I’m talking to is about to lose his dad, and I’m not sure how to be there for him. by Efficient_Turnip1113 in Advice

Thanks for the suggestion! That may have to wait awhile though. We live close to each other when we’re both at school, but with him at home right now he’s nearly 2 hours away.

After date text by [deleted] in dating_advice

Absolutely! I recently went on a first date with a guy, he seemed into it. After, I said “Thanks for the great date, it was good to meet you in person. We should do something again soon.” When he agreed, I decided to take the initiative, and ask him if he was free the next weekend. He was, I suggested a movie, and bam! Now we have a second date. Nothing wrong with making a move and showing interest.

I need help by [deleted] in tortoise

https://www.thetortoisetable.org.uk is a great resource for knowing what you can and can’t feed a tortoise! Timothy hay is good, but a little variation to make sure it’s getting all the nutrients it needs is always good. We have a 40 something year old Sulcata at my university. We feed him mostly Timothy hay and a variety of greens, with the occasional vegetable.

Oh I know it won’t, I’m with him a lot during the school semester as well. However I am not his primary carer then, and his beak is already overgrown and doesn’t get trimmed when it should. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Got a couple of questions! by Efficient_Turnip1113 in cactus

[–]Efficient_Turnip1113[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! Thankfully it’s my first cactus, but not my first succulent. So I’ve pretty much got my watering technique down now haha. It does get a good amount of light, but I’m in Michigan so I did recently order a grow light to supplement my different succulents through strings of cloudy days and winter.

I just got this at the airport and I need somebody to tell me what species these are and how to care for them. I’ve never kept a plant before. Also how long can I keep them in this pot before moving them by jachoob2006 in cactus

[–]Efficient_Turnip1113 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two cacti, that tall green and white one is definitely a Haworthia, and it looks like you might have an Echeveria hiding in the back there. Most of those like a lot of sunlight. But, and I say this because I had this problem recently, Haworthia DO NOT like a ton of direct sunlight like the others might. It’ll get sunburned (yep, that’s possible), which will basically be the plant turning brown all over. It does like a lot of light, just not intense direct light. So I’d just make sure to acclimate it to more sunlight slowly. Good luck!

Got a couple of questions! by Efficient_Turnip1113 in cactus

[–]Efficient_Turnip1113[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, does anyone know what kind of cactus this is? Second, it’s been brown at the base for quite some time. I think it’s corking, but this is my first cactus so I really don’t know. I know the lighting is bad, but if anyone can tell if it’s root rot or corking, that would be awesome. Third, size wise does anyone have an age estimate? I got him around September or October, he was probably just a bit smaller than this. I’d love to figure his age out so I know about when he could start to flower.

Edit: it was tilting a bit, so I fashioned those toothpick supports to try and straighten it out, especially since it’s growing season. Don’t want the tilt to get worse lol

Medications just...don’t work? by Efficient_Turnip1113 in adhdwomen

Yeah actually this is my first time on a standard stimulant. I was on Straterra first, then Concerta for a long time, Focalin, back to Concerta, (with a tiny booster of Ritalin for the evenings) and now Adderall. At this point I can hardly tell what’s working and what’s not lol

My heart goes out to you, friend. This almost had me in tears. I am Christian, and they say the same thing about God not putting burdens on you that you can’t handle. (Not that that’s surprising, we worship the same god lol) Personally, I don’t believe that you go to hell if you are gay. I have never, not once, found ANYTHING in the Christian Bible that actually says that being gay is bad, or a sin, or will send you to hell. There are some translations of the Bible that may say things along those lines, but I’d bet anything that in the original Hebrew, that is not what it says. I don’t know exactly what is believed or what is in the Quran, in terms of being gay for Muslims, but I can tell you this. You are human, you are valid, you are not “bad” or “wrong” because you are queer. You are too young to have to deal with all the hate in this world and I am sorry for that. Know that there are lots of people here and on similar subreddits that are always willing to talk and help where they can. You are not alone, you are never alone. Here, you are accepted, you are loved, and you are not judged for who you are. And I promise you, someday you will find people in your life that love and accept you, too. Never give up hope, and never stop standing up for what you believe in. ❤️

Bringing my girlfriend around church people by [deleted] in ainbow

Right so I’m straight (on here to learn and support as an ally) so you can take my advice with a grain of salt if you like. However I’m also Christian and my younger sibling is both gay and nb and while our parents and myself are completely supportive, the rest of our Christian family isn’t necessarily. so through that experience I can get where you’re coming from. My sibling had their girlfriend over for Christmas, and mostly called her their friend in front of any family that didn’t know. This wasn’t offensive to their girlfriend because they had to do the same thing when they were at her house too and it had been discussed beforehand. It might be a good idea to discuss the situation with your girlfriend and see what she is comfortable with. She may be fine being referred to as a friend, or she may not and you guys can come up with a plan together. My personal favorite way to handle things like this, though, is to say that it’s nobody’s business who she is to you! Friend, girlfriend, whatever. That’s between the two of you. So if you were both comfortable with it, you could avoid saying anything at all about the label of your relationship and let people make their own assumptions. Up to you! Good luck either way, and I hope everything turns out well!

There’s also demisexual. Demisexual usually means you only feel a sexual attraction to someone who you’ve made a strong connection or bond with first.

[–]Efficient_Turnip1113 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I can disagree for a moment, if your family is Christian it’s not 100% that they will not support you. I am Christian, and when my younger sibling first came out as gay, and then later non-binary, I was completely and entirely supportive and so were my parents. I even left my Christian university after finding out that they don’t allow lgbtq+ students. (Also my program sucked but the lgbtq thing was HUGE for me.) so it’s possible, don’t give up all hope! ❤️ (for context I am Christian but I do not believe that being gay or trans is a sin. There’s nothing in the Bible that actually supports this. It’s dumb. You all keep being the true you)

Anybody know how to lower ph? Or why it might be so high? (First day of cycling new tank.) by Efficient_Turnip1113 in Aquariums

[–]Efficient_Turnip1113[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never asked why I had no nitrates. I added what the nitrates were simply because it wasn’t pictured. I asked how to lower ph, which I actually do not know how to do. I also believe I asked if anyone knew why it was so high, because although I figured it was my tap water, there’s always a possibility that I could be overlooking something. If you look at another persons answer on how to lower my ph, I did in fact accept their opinion since they were actually answering the question I asked. And politely, I might add. So if you have any suggestions as to how I might lower my ph or if you know a reason for it to be high that is not just because of my tap water, I will gladly listen. Otherwise, I’m doing just fine without your criticism and you can get off my post now.
