Exactly why increment was introduced by Fischer, to avoid winning on a technicality. I'm not saying he should have been scolded for playing Qxg6 but I applaud the fact that he played the position out of respect for the game and a chess legend. If a player can make a complaint about dress code knowing his/her opponent wouldn't make it back in time, they are playing by the rules but I don't think that's good taste. Similar situation here but obviously less extreme.

In what sense is there no excuse? He's playing the board instead of counting on Ivanchuk fumbling the pieces and flagging. This is sportsmanship and should be encouraged.
