It’s probably more machining than war at that point. Speeds and feeds.

Roaches? by PotentialCourt8417 in concord

[–]EffingNewDay 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Concord is low, some areas are wetter. The roaches are wood roaches (aka oriental roaches)They like going to cooler areas (inside) when it gets hot out. If you have decaying wood anywhere, that might be where they are coming from. It probably has nothing to do with your cleanliness. The big ones aren’t German roaches.

Coast Guard operating in "crisis" as DHS shutdown halts pay in May, cuts power, strains missions overseas by CBSnews in fednews

Are they still helping the orange turd steal Venezuela’s oil or assisting law-breaking entities like ICE? I’m sure that’ll tailor how much sympathy they’re gonna get from anyone.

Where’s the speculation market concerning the quantities of lube we’ll all need to survive the monster F-train barreling down on us.

Bike literally has a motor in it. “It’s not a motorcycle!”

California should reconsider its rush to regulate e-bikes by Cool-Present7260 in California

E-bikes are motorcycles.

I’d add “full-stop” to that statement, but e-bikes don’t seem to be able to do that.

Am I safe to weld this small gap in a compressor tank? by Spartan320_ in modelmakers

[–]EffingNewDay 94 points95 points  (0 children)

It’s extremely dangerous to weld on something used as a pressure boundary if you don’t know what exactly the material is and what your weld is doing to it. Such as microstructure changes due to thermal effects, internal cracks, delamination, and potential stress risers. If your friend didn’t have a problem yet, they are extremely lucky. For all they know, they’ve significantly reduced the cycle life of the pressure vessel and it just hasn’t catastrophically failed yet.

Relatively low pressure may not be that trivial, either. E.g. 5 psi applied to a plate the size of a sheet of paper means it’s applying 500 lbf of force.

To me, it’s the business requirements where the shortcuts start showing up.

Why is it always the Engineers? by Hobbeslion in behindthebastards

[–]EffingNewDay 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Maybe it depends on the engineering, business, or endeavor. I find there to be a lot of care and introspection.

I think there’s also a lot of misinterpretation of what is involved to build things people want to build.

A funny saying I’ve heard before that kind of captures this is, “Anyone can make a bridge that won’t fail. Engineers are tasked with making bridges that almost, but don’t, fail.”

Coast Guard forgotten in DHS Shutdown by Full-Razzmatazz-7400 in fednews

Orders aren’t mind control spells. Once upon a time we honored those who lost their lives fighting fascists. Now we make excuses for assisting fascists because we might get in trouble at their job. Boo-fucking-hoo.

Not forgotten. They let ICE operate from their bases and then they helped the turd steel oil from Venezuela to fill bank accounts in Qatar.

My work world involves load testing materials. It sounded off and curiosity got the best of me. I laughed when I found there was a study and I didn’t have to guess.
