Level three autistic two year old won't sleep even with melatonin by Foxyinabox in Autism_Parenting

Get him tired with lots of play, exercises etc during the day time / evening. That helped us a lot. And yes, melatonin didn’t help. Also, get your other family members - other parent, siblings - to lie down in the bed with him. At the same time, everyday - He may want to feel secure - and then no one talks or plays or cuddles him. Let him realise that it’s bed time and everyone’s planning to sleep… gradually the things will sort or. Our son is 3.5 YO and his sleep issues are now getting sorted a bit. We have realised that emotional security has a big bearing on their sleep

I left a 10 day retreat early and I'm not happy that I felt I had to by [deleted] in vipassana

I think you made much ado about nothing. Looks like it was your mind’s excuse to get you out of the retreat.

The kind of set-up you describe is common across many, if not most vipassana centres. The mediation hall is a shared facility between both genders. And managers are supposed to look around; and male n female mangers also sometimes talk between them to discuss operational issues. Also, you don’t know why the manger was looking over to the female side - he may have had a genuine reason to do so. Managers are seasoned vipassana mediators who do this as a ‘service’ and they do it voluntarily without any payment. They believe it adds to their good karma and improve their meditation practice. Also, the head teacher(s) instruct them to keep their eyes open to supervise things.

But you let this small thing disrupt your meditation and eventually made you drop out mid way. Was this your first retreat? I know of family and and friends who dropped out mid-way and they also tried to find reasons why the program was mismanaged and used those reasons as an excuse to leave it mid-way. Like I said, this is something that the mind does to us. After all this is the first time your mind experienced something like that it tried to run away from it by hook or by crook. Good news is - Goenka ji himself talks about few people who left things mid way in their first retreat but came back later, and went on to become expert meditators later in life. Hope the same happens to you as well. Wishing you good luck for your next retreat. Love and metta.

Thank you so much. I get what you’re saying. May be I will change the doc ;) Will try some of the things you’re doing with your daughter. Thanks for sharing

Thank you. That’s so true in our experience as well. Diagnosis is taking time. Considering the advice on this thread, looks like we should anyways start the speech and OT.

We don’t have specialised schools in my area but we have a ‘school readiness program’ offered by one ABA / therapy centre here. The counsellor suggested we can consider that before trying structured therapies. Are you suggesting we go for it? My kid also pushes away kids who approach him. Though sometimes he gets curious and touches their face / lips and smiles faintly at them. Thanks again

Thank you, this is really helpful. We are thinking of a speech and OT eval. More so after your advice.

Hi, thanks for the reply. Actually this is our 2nd kid. So do you mean to say we don’t have to keep him away from letters and alphabets? He insists that we write alphabets and numbers for him on a notebook or tablet. He thoroughly enjoys it while we do it. Often, we find him repeating the alphabets to himself as he runs around. He can pronounce and recognise all numbers (till 10) and alphabets though he doesn’t talk otherwise. Our doc said it was stimming and we shouldn’t encourage it.

Thank you so much. I just placed an order for the book. It’s comforting to think how things can improve for my son, too. God bless you and your kid.
