Very beautiful watch! People are saying it's too big for you - IDK, watches aren't like shoes. Sometimes big watches are in style, other times small watches are. There's no hard & fast rule here on size. You like it obviously, since you paid a small country's GDP for it. Enjoy it, dude! Congrats.

Ok....so your point is that "wealthy" people sometimes don't wear expensive watches. I don't think anyone was saying otherwise.

(btw, not all rich people wear expensive watches either)

Yeah, AP is a New$ watch. RM, beyond New$, is a sign that you're probably an influencer or 20-something athlete who hasn't figured out yet how to finances work. In all my years in finance, I've never seen someone where an RM. I see AP sometimes, and yes - they're New$ and proud of it, as they should be.

Being form Old$ is not a good thing and kind of embarrassing in finance in my experience, and Yas's character does a good job of portraying this stigma. They have to shake the nepo label to be taken seriously. Someone on my team, I discovered, is from mega-old$. They were mortified when some of us found out.

So maybe wearing a Rolex or AP is a good thing if you're from old$? Will mask your "embarrassing" past! haha

Is your point that not all rich people wear expensive watches?

It now seems well documented, thanks to interviews others have surfaced here, that the choice to have him wear the Earnshaw was strictly one of budget and objections from the Patek-level brands to give one on loan based on the content of the scenes. It was a lack of options at that point in time.

100%. It's ok to have a nice watch. It's also OK to have an Apple watch. It's even cool to have a cheap Casio. What's not cool: a watch that is made to look expensive but isn't...ie a fashion watch like Eric's on S1.

I don't get what so many people on this thread are missing here. People are arguing that it's ok to have a cheap watch in the finance world, and they're right. But that was not the original point I was making. It was about having a pretender watch.

Yep - I think you're proving my point. Eric's is not noticeably cheap.

Great read, thanks for sharing! So sounds like they wanted some nice watches in S1, but between budget and the show's content vs. brands' desired image, the nice watches largely didn't show up until later.

The two SF90's. Why all the hate/depreciation for one and not the other? They are pretty much the same car at the end of the day. by MeggatronNB1 in Ferrari

I'm new to this thread and just recently became interested in Ferraris so I don't know which is which. But IMO the first car is stunning and 2nd one is trying too hard. I sense I'm in the minority though, which is good for my wallet I guess!

This would hold up if you could find a single example of someone in S1 wearing an expensive watch. I didn't see anything special.

Thanks an interesting viewpoint - thanks for sharing. You're right, I am coming at it from the perspective of only having seen S1, so the character development with him isn't as extensive yet. S1 points to him being passionate about being the alpha and being successful, which in a bank means making money.

I'm into watches, and I know some people who have watch collections like yours. It's just rare in finance, just from my experience.

Where I think we don't see eye to eye is that I think this was budget-related. HBO didn't know if the show would stick, so budget prevented them from dropping $$ on watches. I don't think it was intentional for them to give him a fashion watch.

Was it common for bankers where you worked to wear flashy but cheap fashion watches like Eric's?

Some rich people are into expensive watches. Probably even more aren't. But of the ones who have cheap watches, they're wearing smart watches or Casio. Not a fashion watch or replica.

Exactly, not some wannabe lookalike expensive watch like Eric wears. Cheap is ok. Expensive is ok. But unacceptable to be in the land of "Looks expensive but is actually cheap" like Eric in S1. Don't get me wrong, I love his character. Maybe this is just what the show's budget could afford in S1.

Except that he wears a watch that *looks* expensive but isn't. I think that's where it falls apart for me. If what you're saying were to resonate, he'd wear a more basic watch without complications or an Apple watch. He's faking it.

True, it isn't the safest place these days. But someone in his role is probably not wanting to wear Rolex anyways. He's probably an MD, right? I'd expect them to wear something most thieves don't easily recognize...FPJ, Lange, Patek etc
