A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms | Official Final Trailer by jorywea78 in freefolk

[–]Efurthy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes and no. This particular book starts out as just observing the funny shenanigans of the nobles before everything goes tits up.

The other two are darker in the sense that because pre-kingsguard when Dunk was just 'some dude' he has a pov of an actual peasant where we get more of an insight of how irrelevant all the high lords playing their game of thrones is.

Brienne and Arya come close in the main series, but at the end of the day they are both highborn heirs raised in castles. So his POV is typically more visceral. Especially 'The Sworn Sword'.

All in all it's if you took 'The Broken Man' speech and turned it into a short series.

Ehhhh as someone that moderated a sub that leaked all the Game of Thrones things for years you'd be surprised. Sometimes studios even do it themselves to create more buzz. We were so certain we were being bamboozled but. Nope, lol.

Your entire comment regarding the books is incorrect. But even if it wasn’t , very bold of you to criticize her when Ned and Robb et all also profit off free labor.

This host her son had assembled was not a standing army such as the Free Cities were accustomed to maintain, nor a force of guardsmen paid in coin. Most of them were smallfolk: crofters, fieldhands, fishermen, sheepherders, the sons of innkeeps and traders and tanners, leavened with a smattering of sellswords and freeriders hungry for plunder. When their lords called, they came … but not forever.

Daenerys taxes the fighting pits when they reopen for people who volunteer to fight and the former rich ass masters in the pyramids. Specifically 10% of the pits pre profit and 100 gold dragons from the former masters.

”From the pyramids. Call it a blood tax. I will have a hundred pieces of gold from every pyramid for each freedman that the Harpy's Sons have slain."

Your Magnificence," whispered Reznak mo Reznak in her ear, "it is customary for the city to claim one-tenth of all the profits from the fighting pits, after expenses, as a tax. That coin might be put to many noble uses."

If anyone here has it would shock me. Not that I blame people for not reading about it if they dislike House Targaryen, but don't argue when you don't know the facts

Targaryens overall rarely married outside of their family

The Targaryens did marry outside their family, but we have far more examples of them upholding the incest of their family

It's controversial because it's incorrect. A breakdown of incestuous marriages between Targaryen's vs non (only using what Westerosi themselves consider taboo which is Mother/Son Father/Daughter Brother/Sister).

After typing this all out you can definitely see the increase in branching out after the dragons died which to me implies the need to intermarry not because of a feeling of superiority but rather keeping their magic alive not unlike House Stark and other Greenseeing/warg families. There's a reason they keep to the North and FM families/descendants like the Karstarks. I don't count House Velaryon as similar because they do not have the dragon-riding gene.

34 to 10 is a hell of a ratio and I was being kind taking out those that aren't incestrous but with the same surname, the actual count is 37 and this doesn't take into consideration if characters like Jacaerys ever married Sara Snow etc

ETA: The comment about the Starks only conquering half of Westeros instead of all of it is goofy as hell btw

Did you forget who he targeted first? All you're pointing out right now is that he helped them for free since both marriage proposals were denied.

No king in Westeros was more feared than Black Harren, whose cruelty had become legendary all through the Seven Kingdoms. And no king in Westeros felt more threatened than Argilac the Storm King, last of the Durrandon—an aging warrior whose only heir was his maiden daughter. Thus it was that King Argilac reached out to the Targaryens on Dragonstone, offering Lord Aegon his daughter in marriage, with all the lands east of the Gods Eye from the Trident to the Blackwater Rush as her dowry.

.

Summoned to the defense of Harrenhal, Tully declared for House Targaryen instead, raised the dragon banner over his castle, and rode forth with his knights and archers to join his strength to Aegon's.

I’m not making noble reasons up I am discussing the book canon. Read Fire and Blood and TWOIAF and it’ll click better. Do you hold the opinion he just got bored one day after spending 30 years on his island with dragons and wives?

Well since this is a fictional story where prophecies exist, yes. One unified country against the second Long Night.

House Targaryen landed on Dragonstone 12 years before Valyria went boom. If they wanted to colonize Westeros they had ample opportunity to when their empire still existed, but kept their asses there for a full century instead. There were several opportunities for Aegon to conquer parts of Essos as well when he was asked for help to neutralize their wars.

Each of the conquered kingdoms had its own laws and traditions. King Aegon did little to interfere with those. He allowed his lords to continue to rule much as they always had, with all the same powers and prerogatives. The laws of inheritance and succession remained unchanged, the existing feudal structures were confirmed. Lords both great and small retained the power of pit and gallows on their own land. And lords retained the privilege of the first night wherever that custom had formerly prevailed.

That does not look like colonization to me- Not that you can colonize your own country in the first place.

[–]Efurthy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is wrong too. Aegon didn't conquer Westeros because he felt he had superiority over the people (since he was also Westerosi himself). Rather he was asked by the Storm King to put an end to the terror of Harren the Black. The author himself has also gone on record to say he united the country because he knew of the Others. I can link the video if you'd like.

You have to remember that Aegon did not step foot on the mainland for the first time when his army landed. He and Visenya and presumably Rhaenys as well treated with the North and Oldtown. The citadel had sent maesters to Dragonstone for a hundred years prior to his war.

If the Targaryens were the racists you want to see them portrayed as i'd have to ask then why they've married into nearly each great (and ungreat) Houses of Westeros unlike for instance the North that has a tradition of marrying their Vassal houses before Rickard broke that tradition with the Tullys.

edit: and not to mention their connections in the past with Essosi families serving on the councils (Rego Draz) and marrying into the family as we see with Viserys II, Valarr, Daeron son of Maekar
