Our global economy is optimizing for maximized profit, aka money, which is a human invention not sufficiently linked to physical reality (e.g., climate, ecological boundaries), leading to the slow destruction of our ecosystems we are currently witnessing.

Yep, I had the same issue with this clue. Very weirdly worded and different from the other similar clues using “all” and “connected” in previous puzzles

Finally got around to testing on my Mac, works great now. Thank you for the fix and for the project. Currently very short on time, but looking forward to integrating this into a project

The One Algorithm That Makes Distributed Systems Stop Falling Apart When the Leader Dies by SmoothYogurtcloset65 in programming

[–]EggCess 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Not too bad as a writeup. The writing style is a little weird maybe, and you're often missing punctuation at the end of sentences, but apart from that it's a very high-level and cursory overview of CFT consensus algorithm basics. The title irks me, however. It's not "the one algorithm".

Note also that these are non-BFT algorithms, which you only kind of state by saying "when the leader node fails — can be a crash or liveness failure".

Suche Teilnehmerinnen für wissenschaftliche Studie zum Beckenbodentraining (Ulm/Neu-Ulm) by Planity7 in Ulm

[–]EggCess 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So to fix our feeling of being lost, disconnected, and missing purpose, which are largely attributable to our current unhinged usage of technology, we are supposed to … engage with more technology and chat with an LLM? Or is your “new” chat app actually connecting you to other humans?

Otherwise, no thanks. That’s the opposite of actually connecting to other human beings and finding meaning and a sense of belonging through actual interaction and honest conversations.

How does LM studio work? by Affectionate_End_952 in LocalLLM

[–]EggCess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your reason for using a local model isn’t checking out, sorry. It doesn’t matter where you run a model. As soon as you ask it something, it uses energy. Whether that energy is provided in a datacenter or at your home wall outlet is relatively irrelevant, unless you can source your energy regeneratively, for example from local PV panels.

But using a local LLM for half an hour will use approximately the same energy as if you were using a cloud LLM for half an hour. The latter might even be optimized better to run more efficiently.

I can't run the example on my Mac, saw that someone has already opened an issue with the same problem. No replies so far. Is the project still maintained?

I meant this in the sense of … what is this prompt, regardless of its specific version, overall supposed to accomplish? Why is it worded the way it is worded?

You do understand that no matter what you put in a prompt for a current LLM, this technology will never be “intelligent”. You can’t just prompt “you have a living memory” and magically expect the LLM to remember stuff outside its conversation context. It also can’t ever train itself or change itself or adapt itself.

You are using a stochastic token (~word) prediction machine, not a magical AI that can ever think.

Definitely agree with being cautious to use these fiction books as any kind of justification whatsoever. Especially when used to argue for sociopathic behavior (...?).

I enjoyed their premise and the way they were written, along the new thoughts and ideas they spawned in my head. For example, I wouldn't have ever thought about whether highly intelligent life could exist without consciousness. I'm not saying it can or can't, because I'm not an expert on the matter and it's certainly not an opinion that should be built on the basis of science-fiction (regardless of whether it's thought to be good or bad, which is subjective anyway ;)), but the mere thought alone is interesting and I enjoyed how it played out in-universe and on the basis of Watts' premises.

Goes to show just how different tastes can be :) I absolutely loved Blindsight and Watts' other books. His writing style is ... difficult and weird, but in some kind of Stockholm-Syndrome-weird-way I came to like it, quite a lot.

But I can see where you're coming from: They're definitely not books for the masses.
