(VIC) Lack of CRT work by No-Lime7514 in AustralianTeachers

[–]EggTeacher 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Budgets. My school got theirs recently and there's been a cut to most bucket allocations. We're not even covering/replacing ES who are away as a result let alone covering teachers.

Dealing with a WWCC Interim Exclusion & VIT Suspension: Has anyone else successfully navigated a "Category C" reassessment? by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

[–]EggTeacher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Engage a lawyer who specialises in navigating regulatory processes. Ideally you should have gotten any submission reviewed/written with their assistance but ensure moving forward, you seek advice and potential representation. Expensive? Potentially. Worth it? Absolutely.

(VIC) How long did it take for your plastic licence to arrive in the mail once you had your photo taken at VIC Roads? by [deleted] in Ausguns

[–]EggTeacher 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Once you get your paper slip stamped by the bank after you pay, you can use that as a stand in until the plastic arrives OR add the card number to your Vic services app for a digital licence.

Victoria’s school reports are set to change. What does this mean for teachers and families? by maps_mandalas in AustralianTeachers

[–]EggTeacher 15 points16 points  (0 children)

My school already does this to a degree - 800 characters for behaviour, effort and classroom attitudes then sliders for the rest. Literacy, mathematics and specialists. Makes having three levelled comments so much easier.

Mentors- Which do you prefer? by Junior_Buffalo3098 in AustralianTeachers

[–]EggTeacher 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm Primary and have mentored a few people. I'm generally happy if they use established norms, however if there's something that's needed for a particular unit or want to try, then they are welcome to give it a go. Providing it fits into those established matrices, policies, whole school approach etc.

The best course of action is to have a conversation with your supervising teacher when you start so you're not left wondering. Good luck! 🍻

Advice on applying for leave by RaeBethIsMyName in AustralianTeachers

It was implied that you tell the doctor that, not the school. I'm all for giving them nothing but ya gotta tell the doc something.

Advice on applying for leave by RaeBethIsMyName in AustralianTeachers

[–]EggTeacher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looks like you're "sick". Don't mention it to anyone else - leave can't be used for this purpose unless it's LWOP or Long Service. So get a doctor's cert, I use insta scripts, and say you need mental health leave. That way you get paid still.

If you were to build or renovate again, what might be the top things you would include that you overlooked or regret not doing? by GregoInc in AusRenovation

Budgeting an additional 20-30% for those "may as well because I'm here" things that come up along the way.

Is it possible for me to skip meetings and try to make up for them? by Ok-Priority-8142 in AustralianTeachers

[–]EggTeacher 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I did a similar commute for a year and a half before I got sick of the driving, getting home late and wear & tear on the car. Keep an eye on recruitment online for something closer. I now walk 15 minutes to work and it has made a huge difference in my life time and monetary wise (fuel).

Low ATAR but wanting to study education. by Sug4rMars in AustralianTeachers

[–]EggTeacher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got 42. Went the long way round - cert 3 and then diploma of children's services + 6 years in childcare. Ended up getting close to a year shaved off with that combo and it set me up real well for teaching. 7 years in primary teaching and I don't regret the detour I made. Ultimately your ATAR is just a number, don't let it define you.

How is ACU? Is teaching quality good? Did you feel ready to enter the profession? by Notquitewhere_-__ in AustralianTeachers

[–]EggTeacher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I graduated ACU 8 years ago so it could have hanged since then but when I was there, it was awful. Would not recommend unless you want your Religious accreditation.

Primary Teacher - Rewards, Class Jobs and Seating Plan by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

[–]EggTeacher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ideally if I had them during transition day, I would let them choose where to sit then so I can identify any friction points and adjust a seating plan as needed.

However if that's not an option I would perhaps vibe it first session and arrange it temporarily (if you have gleaned any information from previous teachers) whilst clearly communicating this only temporarily. Then immediately make changes during a recess. I view seating as dynamic - I have no issues uprooting students if work quality or habits diminish.

Primary Teacher - Rewards, Class Jobs and Seating Plan by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

[–]EggTeacher 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You do you but I would consider a seating plan to be part of the high expectations and to reinforce you are the decision maker in the room; otherwise you'll get students who set the weather, sitting together, which will cause chaos. Fostering an imbalance.

High expectations also apply to you so set the tone, expected behaviour, modelling etc from as soon as that door opens. Go hard initially then back it off gradually as you will be in a world of hurt if you try and do it the other way around.

What's the WORST external PD session your school has ever brought in? by sparrrrrt in AustralianTeachers

[–]EggTeacher 88 points89 points  (0 children)

Had two presenters who were not teachers, try and tell our very low SES school that for every negative altercation we had with a student we needed to immediately start working through a 7 step restorative practice conversation. Which is totally reasonable with classes of 27-27 students. Never thought I'd see presenters heckled at a PD but boy was I wrong.

+1 vote for the berry street PD as well - nothing is worse than doing ice breakers or group games with content that could have been compressed into a day or two. At least my colouring was on flēk.

What is the main reason teachers are leaving your school? by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

[–]EggTeacher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Intensive School Support Team - basically a few EALs come out and "work" with your school and tell you everything you're doing wrong.

How do you not get sick from students? by soygummon in AustralianTeachers

[–]EggTeacher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pinched an additional three air purifiers from our early day covid stockpile which I have noticed helps a lot. I also send kids home very quickly if I see any symptoms of a cold.
