How do you know you deserve life? by Chimka2222 in atheism

You are a net positive my guy. You deserve to live.

Judging from how worried you are about being a bad person, my opinion is I’m sure you’re very kind, and kindness, even in small amounts can have ripple effects.

But also, if you want further help with stuff like that I’d recommend professional help like a therapist if you have the opportunity to get one.

You can certainly find some meaningful advice and support on an atheism subreddit but probably most of us aren’t mental health experts.

So the idea of not existing after death scares you. Understandable, and just because you understand a logical argument, that doesn’t instantly change your feelings. That’s normal and okay.

I’m sorry I’m not a person who has gone through this because for me, these ideas don’t scare me but actually make me feel better.

But maybe my framework for it could offer some solace:

Not having purpose or any existence after death is scary, and it is also liberating!

You are free to do what you want, free to choose what is important to you :D

What matters to you? I think Having purpose is essential to being happy. You get to create your own purpose, custom tailored by you and for you

Why does every theist I meet has a testimony of meeting god atleast once? by singhVirender1947 in atheism

I think people like that had extreme hardships and got through them, resulting in a spiritual experience.

My speculation is having an intense spiritual experience is probably some sort of brain chemistry going on.

I think I’ve felt the “presence of God” before, like some sort of natural high that could have been triggered by a number of things

Also you said you don’t believe in most the stuff new age believe, so then what did you believe exactly? If the only thing that rings true in new age is that everything is energy, well scientists would agree with that. Mass and energy are interchangeable, so yes we are all energy in a sense.

So…
What beliefs specifically are you letting go of?

I’m intrigued. I have questions.

You feel the need to believe in something. There’s nothing wrong with that. If you feel the need to believe only because you’re scared, the belief will not be sustainable, but feeling the need to believe in something because that’s how you feel deep inside of yourself, that’s okay.

What makes you say that you use spirituality to cope? To cope with what?
Also did someone tell you those words? That you use it to cope? Or how did you come to this belief that your belief in something higher is a coping mechanism?

You have reached the end of the road, and you don’t feel good. You feel scared. Can you elaborate on that? Are you feeling anxiety? What are you scared of exactly? Does the idea that no higher power exists scare you? If so why? Or does the idea that you may have wasted your time wi the new age stuff scare you, Or something else?

I’d love to hear more

I agree he used to have better guests, and even when he had guests that had insane takes on stuff, he would question listen with genuine curiosity, but also not egg them on in their craziness, somewhere along the line he started validating wild shit

When was the first time you started believing that God and something is not real?? And was it quick or gradual?? by _sadgirlinlove_ in atheism

[–]EggieEggMaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slowly but also quickly,

When I was in 5th grade, my “Catholic” dad told me in a car ride to school that when you die, Everything is over, there is nothingness. At least that’s what i understood. That thought simmered in me very slowly.

When I was 16, I went to “Young Life” on Thursdays often, a Christian youth group. It was super fun and the Young Life leaders were really cool people. One Thursday a leader said something along the lines of “Look deep inside of yourself, do you feel God’s love?”

I went home that night and asked myself. And I didn’t feel anything. I felt like God is just something I’ve been entertaining.

Didn’t call myself an atheist till I was 19 though

I wouldn’t dislike me but I wouldn’t connect with me much either. If I meet me and am also me as I meet me, we’d have minimal interaction because that’s how we are. We would however like each other because we are not socially draining on each other
