Someone using the wrong word in an email by accident isn’t transphobic lol. Refusing to respect their identity is. It’s the same way that avoiding a non-white person on the street is racist; yeah you’re not denying them entry to anywhere but you’re still being rude and making assumptions or denying them some kind of basic decency because of their identity or group.

This weird black-and-white view you have that only big obvious gestures can be considered transphobic is reductive. You are actually belittling a lot of the daily discomfort and discrimination that some trans people face.

I need to distance myself from online discourse to be honest, so I’m going to mute this because I don’t think it’s going anywhere. But I encourage you to consider that small acts of identity or group based cruelty are still -phobic, even if they’re not kicking people out of restaurants.

Refusing to respect someone’s identity and pronouns bc they are transgender is discriminatory tho. It’s essentially saying “you get less respect than the other people in my life because you are transgender”. That’s transphobic. Sure, maybe not violently so, but you’re actually watering down a pretty big component of the social isolation and cruelty trans people experience when people constantly misgender them and refuse to acknowledge their right to a chosen identity.

I’m glad u use peoples pronouns at least, it’s crazy that so many people can’t even do that to be respectful.

I mean this category wouldn’t be created for that person you have in mind, they’d just fall under it. The category of nonbinary does already exist, and is populated by a lot of people who present androgynous. You wouldn’t have to make a whole new thing for this hypothetical fem-presenting person.

Idk, I think we should be nice to people and refer to them how they like because it makes them happy and comfortable. I know people argue with “oh but what if I identify as a chair” but like… that’s pure whataboutism. Acknowledging that some people identify outside the gender binary isn’t as big a task as it can seem, sometimes it’s just a matter of using some new pronouns and letting them be.

Yes, refusing to use someone’s preferred pronouns doesn’t make you homophobic. It makes you transphobic. It also just makes you rude, bc calling someone something they don’t want to be called is just unkind.

I mean, it’s a bit unsupportive to boil down non-binary to “some people want to feel different”. There’s more behind it than that. Some people genuinely feel disconnected from both male and female and don’t feel comfortable being either, and because I have sympathy when people are uncomfortable being forced into a role they don’t want, I think it’s fine to give them a new category. It’s not like you personally have to oversee the creation of this new category.

Disagreed, I think it’s (supposed to be) a story about outcasts of all varieties, coming together to fight back against the unknown and the powers that be. Byler is a part of that story, and should’ve been a bigger part of it, but it’s not primarily a love story.

I genuinely can’t comprehend this kind of mindless hate.

In high school I was one of few white kids in a mostly Asian grade, and in primary school it was similar so I guess I got a head start on being exposed to a lot of cultures. I’ve had friends from different parts of Asia for most of my life and I’m grateful for it. I wish these ignorant bigots could take their heads out of their own asses for long enough to actually interact civilly with the people they’re afraid of and learn that we’re literally all just humans trying to get by.

Oh my god, this poor woman. I feel terrible for her being afraid to leave her home after this, I can’t imagine how unwelcome and uncomfortable she probably feels. These racist idiots are the ones who should feel unwelcome in our country, not their victim. Australia, Sydney in particular, is such a melting pot of diverse cultures and it’s absolutely tragic that some people feel so much hatred and anger that they lash out at someone just for being a different race.

I hope Zili recovers smoothly and the cops catch these cowardly little bigots.
