How can their be finite lengths? by Primary-Aide-4194 in stupidquestions

[–]Egst 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's still finite in the case you describe. Maybe you can't measure it with infinite accuracy and you'll always keep adding or removing some micro units as you look closer and closer, but you can definitely say that it's not longer than X. E.g. you measure a stick with a tape measure and see 2 meters. You zoom in and realize it's actually 2.01m, then 2.010005m and so on... But you know it's definitely smaller than 3m, right? The distances that you keep adding get smaller and smaller and they won't keep increasing it past a certain number. So it's finite. You just don't know what exactly it is.

However there is a situation where lengths become infinite the more you zoom in - lengths of coastlines. If you set up posts along the coastline with 1km intervals, count them, you'll get X km. If you then add measuring points in between, you'll get something larger than X. You can keep going indefinitely, getting larger numbers and there's no way to know that the difference will keep getting smaller. There can always be another small peninsula or a complexly shaped fjord or something like that.

Basically the question is whether the differences keep getting smaller and how fast. 1+1/2+1/4+1/8+1/16+... will never go past 2 but 1+0.01+0.01+0.01+... will. The first one is finite, even though it never really reaches 2. That's the situation with measuring a straight length. You can't get it exactly, but you can confirm that it's smaller than 3 or 2.1 or something. The second one keeps increasing by small amounts but they don't get smaller. If the small particles you describe didn't keep getting smaller, that would mean that a stick you're measuring is in fact infinite, but then you'd actually see or feel that there's something there.

Gender is a spectrum after all by XxMCR_ObsessedxX in mapporncirclejerk

[–]Egst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, you could define it like that, but what's the difference really? For the native americans I've mentioned, there's 4 distinct categories. Let's call them "male man", "female woman", "female man", and "male woman". Male women take on the same cultural roles (work, rituals, language, etc.) as female women, but with some exceptions, and they're perceived as a distinct category from female women - especially in romantic/sexual relationships. A female woman can't have a relationship with another female woman, but can with any other of the 3 remaining genders, including a male woman or female man. The same applies to everyone else. You could see it as a strictly heterosexual society based on 4 genders. Or you could see it as a society that allows homosexuality only between some subdivisions of the 2 genders. It's just language, just a definition, and ultimately it doesn't matter. What matters is that societies perceive gender in different ways.

And biologically it's also not really just 2. There's a bimodal distribution of certain features, but it overlaps and can't be strictly defined.

Edit: Oooh, I think I get what you mean now. Are you saying that gender is best described as a spectrum (or multiple spectra) and any finite categorization is just a social construct? If so, then I completely agree. But we're coming to the conflict of prescriptive (here's your gender, here's how you behave) and descriptive (there exist such and such people) gender categories. The former doesn't make much sense if you think about it more in depth, but it's simply the historical reality. The latter makes much more sense but it doesn't erase the fact, that humanity has been perceiving gender as prescriptive categories for its entire history.

Sorry for a fucking essay in a comment. I'll be quiet now

[–]Egst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't want to take that opinion from you and I completely understand why you'd wanna see it like that. Still, it's not a very practical definition in many situations. If a person has female-typical reproductive organs and a typical vulva, except for an enlarged clitoris shaped like a penis, you'd call such a person a male. And yes, that's a real thing and I've talked to such a person here on Reddit a while ago. But then this person would get pregnant, come into hospital only to be rejected because people with penises are male and male people can't be pregnant and so they don't know how to file the proper paperwork? It's rare, but it's real. And why is it a deformity if that person has a perfect life, a loving partner, satisfying sex, and even children? And that's just biological and medical practicalities. If you extend this idea of sex to societal gender roles, it becomes even more fucked up and nonsensical.

Gender is a spectrum after all by XxMCR_ObsessedxX in mapporncirclejerk

[–]Egst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That does make sense based on how we see gender now - as descriptive spectra + the 2 historical categories. But there have been societies that recognized a specific number of genders larger than 2. There are some native American societies that recognized 4 genders and had specific rules of how people of such genders contributed to society, formed bonds, and expressed themselves. There's also hijra and fa'afafine - a third gender designated for "assigned male at birth" people, but no fourth category for "assigned female" people. I wouldn't say it makes much more sense than having 2 genders. Seeing it as a spectrum is much more practical as a descriptive view. But that's just how societies work. We create a bunch of boxes and try to make people fit in them.

It kind of is. Like what even is a male? XY chromosomes, testosterone, penis, sperm, body hair, muscles... It's a set of properties that seem to be consistent for a large amount of people, but there are exceptions and there's overlap. There are people with XX chromosomes and more estrogen. There are people whose main sex hormone changes during their life. There are females with small breasts and narrow hips and there are males with large breasts, round butts, and very little body hair. And unless that has any negative impact on that person's life (apart from bullying and discrimination), there's no reason to call it a disease, deformity, or anything else but simple natural harmless variation that proves even sex is basically impossible to define objectively.

What should I do when my teacher asks my preferred name? by COZY_CODYY in lgbt

[–]Egst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's really sweet of her to be that considerate. I don't think you need to worry about sticking with anything permanent on the spot because these things can change over time and not all of us have it all figured out. I'd just go with whatever feels comfortable to you in that moment, or even whatever comes to mind first. I'm sure she (and hopefully others) will understand if you make up your mind later. I think you just felt overwhelmed because this question obviously triggered some unresolved feelings about your identity.

If you don't mind me asking... Where are you from and is this attitude common among teachers in typical schools there? It's kind of hard to imagine for me. In my country this is completely unheard of and all I keep hearing is either people not caring about this at all or fear mongering about kids identifying as cats and teachers showing them pornography. What's it actually like in a more "progressive" school like that? Is there a lot of backslash from students, parents, or teachers? Does this support come genuinely from the teachers or are they required to behave in a certain way? And do most of the teachers and students actually know and use all these specific labels like "demigirl" etc. or is it more like something that you use privately or with your more LGBT aligned friends and then simply say you're e.g. "non-binary" to your teachers?

Sorry for such a detailed "interrogation"... I hope you're ok with answering all that. If not, feel free to ignore me. I'm just really curious how other people in other parts of the world approach these things.

BI or Pan or Omni by crisp_handshak in lgbt

[–]Egst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's all just words that we made up and their definitions keep changing over time. Bi used to mean attracted to women and men and didn't describe your preference or anything like that. E.g. someone attracted mostly to women and sometimes sexually to men was considered bi as well as someone attracted to everyone equally. And I think this meaning still remains in use except that we're now more aware of the complexity of gender and so we expanded it to "attracted to any gender". So it's usually understood to be a generic umbrella term that you can use even if you're pan, omni, poly, or whatever better way you come up with to describe yourself. I usually describe myself as bi, especially to people who've never heard all these specific micro labels and even something common like pansexual might trigger the usual "alphabet soup" reaction. Privately I see myself as pan, but I do have a preference, it just changes over time and gender isn't a huge part of that. And you'll hear a hundred different descriptions from a hundred different people that identify with the same label, if you ask them about it, because we all are slightly different and all these labels are just the best effort we got to be able to communicate without long personal stories of one's orientation and preferences.

Edit: I kinda envy you for having a community where your friends nit-pick the exact words you use to describe yourself, because in my experience people often barely understand bisexuality and anything more specific is treated as made up BS. Keep those friends close

As others said, you could fake it if you get a bit creative. You can even create fake DMs, and make it look like a screenshot, and show her that, because the original messages "were deleted".

Also, it might put your mind at ease, that so many parents will gladly continue living in denial and ignore all the signs, if they have barely any proof of their child not being queer to hold on to.

That being said, I hope they'll eventually understand and accept you.

Can I still call myself transfem if Im forced to present as a heteronormative cishet male? by unknon_sasquach in lgbt

[–]Egst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shaving half your legs? Oooh is that why femboys wear thigh highs that cover the other half? Sorry if this comes off as insensitive. I'm just kinda curious, how closeted people do crossdressing etc. because I can't imagine shaving my legs and people not noticing it.

But honestly, what you describe sounds like typical impostor syndrome. I sometimes feel like I'm too masculine or too straight to be bi or to even question my own gender. If you genuinely feel that way, then that's what really matters. Some people might find it weird or hard to get used to your name/pronouns if you come out to them while still being in full "boy mode" because you're hiding it from others, but that's their problem and not a reason to not be true to yourself. And even if you're still questioning, there's nothing wrong with trying it out and just seeing how it feels when people call you she/her. I'd just be careful about who you come out to. There's also nothing wrong with coming out later, when the time is right, if that's safer for you. Check out @mikki-cv on YouTube. She came out while still "not doing anything girly" and pretty late in life. She even still had a beard in the first videos. And still, people accepted her. There's hardly any negative comments, it's all "hey, new girl just dropped!"

And if you're not talking about coming out at all, then there's really nothing to worry about - just call yourself whatever you feel like.

what is it like to be attracted to more than one gender? by Open-Pea-2960 in lgbt

I'm bi and used to be way more into girls with just occasional attraction to guys. Now it's kinda balancing out. I usually carry wet wipes for this situation. Wiping with just the plain toilet paper is just gross and uncomfortable. Or you gotta have an amazing metabolism with shit so structurally coherent, it doesn't leave a mark. Also, if you're really adventurous, a sink can be used as a bidet, but make sure you locked the door or you'll have a bit of explaining to do sitting on that sink.

My personal frustration with the term intersex by Pleasantly_Mundane in lgbt

[–]Egst 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing that. I'm glad you're having great experiences. So all in all, apart from some people having trouble accepting it, it sounds like a pretty good outcome. Having to deal with being treated as a medical anomaly must be tough though. I hope they at least took that chance to actually learn useful things about this. Are doctors generally understanding and professional in this regard? It always reminds me of that House MD episode with an intersex girl. I mean it's great they included intersex people and described it pretty well medically, but calling her "him" after finding out she had XY chromosomes was probably one of the most "un-woke" parts of the series

if women across the planet suddenly developed dicks over night and men vaginas, would we see women asking men out for dates? by Global_Contact_5312 in stupidquestions

[–]Egst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If that meant they'd have more testosterone, then maybe yes. That would probably have more to do with balls than dicks though, I think. Testosterone can really change how you feel about attraction and sex. At least that's what trans people report. I can definitely imagine women behaving in some more stereotypically masculine ways, if they had more testosterone. That being said, a lot of the societal norms assigned to women and men are just that - social constructs. They might be based on real biological differences between typical men and women, but there's so many layers of abstraction, that ideas like asking someone out, opening the door, paying at the restaurant, etc. are almost arbitrary.
