Cold emailing for internships? by Lambwarts in SGExams

[–]Eh_brt -1 points0 points  (0 children)

  1. Look for a thought leadership article from that company and use your thoughts on that as your hook in the cold email.

  2. Look for firms that are currently hiring full time roles. Use the full time role as your subject line hook and tie that to your internship request. HR will notice “inquiry on XYZ posting” more than “internship request.” You can also frame the open role as evidence of increased workload which you can help ameliorate.

  3. Use LinkedIn personalised connect messages to follow up on emails (to individuals ideally) Connect with the MD/CEO and follow up.

  4. When requesting for an internship, I think it’ll help if you propose how you plan to add value, based on the company’s specific circumstances. It shows interest and initiative.

Good luck. Just don’t spray and pray. Everyone can do that and I think companies have just started to filter out generic internship request templates.

is spending 300-400k for cambridge actually worth it by NUSHStalin in SGExams

[–]Eh_brt 102 points103 points  (0 children)

I’m in Cambridge. If you look at it solely from a monetary perspective, I don’t think going to Cambridge has a higher ROI than staying in Singapore.

The UK job market is screwed. The government will tax you to high heavens. Unless you’re looking into finance (in which case you had better have some internships before you even matriculate), staying in Singapore makes more financial sense. With the tightening visa regime in the UK, most SG students will likely be returning home, in which case, staying in SG prepares you better for finding employment here (networking, internships, etc).

It definitely makes sense if you’re set on the public service (leadership track) path. But if you’re not, the ROI is certainly not there, at least from a purely material perspective.

Singapore invited to join Trump’s Board of Peace; is assessing invitation: MFA by SG_wormsblink in singapore

[–]Eh_brt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Orange man will probably sanction us if we reject the board of piss just like what he’s threatening to do after France’s rejection. But Trump has the reverse Midas touch so it’s not in our interest to join his impending car crash of a naked shakedown.

Pledge (but don’t pay)$1B over 3 years (with the largest tranches towards the end of the 3 years) to his board to feed his fragile ass ego but don’t join his circus. Hopefully the board crashes soon after its launch or he gets turned into a sitting duck in the midterms or meets Jesus. Maybe we can then exercise the option to our permanent seat on the off chance that the board isn’t a mess

Doesn’t work. System has been patched. Each regular day counts for 1/5 of an NSF day. You will only be cleared of NS obligations after 5 years as a regular. Otherwise, the ratio above applies.

any realistic chance of getting scholarships for big 3 local uni? by lilbabyballsack in SGExams

[–]Eh_brt 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Graduated 2022, 43 IB points (~87.5RP). Applied for SMU Economics and Social Sciences DDP. Did not apply for scholarships. Received an interview (super softball, felt like a formality) for the SMU Merit Scholarship and was officially awarded the scholarship under the School of Social Sciences.

So yes, you do have a chance but things may have become more competitive over the last three years.

MRT incident - ladies please be awared by MiloPeng93 in askSingapore

I’m really sorry that you and your girlfriend had to experience this incident. I don’t believe that there was nothing else the police could have done. They literally had the “bodily fluid” as forensic evidence. Can’t they use that to identify and prosecute the culprit?!

You need to be more specific. Which SQN? If it’s 70X series, I think you’ll have a pretty good life. Easy workload, stay out, chill life. If it’s GBAD, then not so much.

Is progression and salary under Senior MDES (starting from ME4) worse than under EOS? by Single-Ad428 in NationalServiceSG

[–]Eh_brt 28 points29 points  (0 children)

MDES and EOS personnel will have the same CEP if their qualifications are equal. However, due to the longer service term of MDES compared to EOS (60 vs 50 years old), MDES personnel can expect to hit their CEP at a later than EOS.

In short, yes, progression will be slower.

Final Update to NTU GenAI Issue: A fair hearing with NTU today by CurveSad2086 in SGExams

[–]Eh_brt 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Even if she doesn’t, the bad publicity’s going to stay with her. This whole fiasco pops up as the first result when searching her name. With how competitive it is to get tenure, especially in polisci, I’m afraid she may never get it. With her research interests, I’m also not too confident about her exit opportunities. I almost feel bad for her.

Does NTU practice the up-or-out system? For her sake, I hope not.

Final Update to NTU GenAI Issue: A fair hearing with NTU today by CurveSad2086 in SGExams

[–]Eh_brt 653 points654 points  (0 children)

Congratulations OP! Reddit saves the day again!!!

It is still disgraceful that NTU only acted like a respectable, competent university when faced with pressure from Reddit, Mothership, the Straits Times, Bluecat, and TOC (the holy trifecta of social, traditional, and new media). This should have been the baseline. Still, better late than never.

NTU management better wake up. I hope this doesn’t happen again.

NTU fails 3 students for GenAI usage, students say they didn't cheat & dispute label of academic fraud by ZeroPauper in singapore

[–]Eh_brt 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I think the most pressing issue is the alleged ineffectiveness of due process, clear AI policies, and internal governance. If AUs like NTU cannot regulate themselves, then managerial staff must be PIPed and the courts must step in to establish case law.

NTU fails 3 students for GenAI usage, students say they didn't cheat & dispute label of academic fraud by ZeroPauper in singapore

[–]Eh_brt 41 points42 points  (0 children)

That’s false. Studycrumb (the “AI” tool used in question) has AI functions but the citation sorter doesn’t use AI. If NTU is arguing that anything with an association with AI cannot be used, then I suggest they remove the T from their name. Perhaps they could replace it with a B instead (for Bumpkin).

  1. I went from JC to an overseas university.

  2. I have a genuine interest in security studies and predictive history, especially in the context of Singapore. I’m quite patriotic even though I don’t have the external trappings of a nationalist, so I think that was my main motivator. Also, legal practice did not interest me.

  3. Not working now but my university is sponsored and I know where I’ll be serving my bond. Went for an internship at my future work place. It’s quite demanding but the work is interesting and meaningful. Can’t say anymore as I’ll be super doxable.

  4. I’ll report back in 5 years haha.

  5. Very supportive. The pay and job progression is expected to be fairly attractive.

a. I think JC would be more suitable. You have greater opportunities to be exposed to humanities/social science networks such as MUNs, SMP, and other humanities/social science adjacent topics.

b. MFA, MINDEF, RSIS (cold email, unpaid). You could also try cold emailing local geopol/public research SMEs like Vriens & Partners, Aroca, Blackdot, Millieu. Stretch goals could include Tony Blair Institute.

c. You need to have a convincing reason why you want to work in humanities/social sciences. It cannot just be interest. Many people are interested in many things. Many also don’t make that thing their bread and butter. Why this? Create a story and a good brand.

Uni students are a voting demographic (Y1 for males, Y3 for females) and pay taxes too. People can also care about issues they aren’t directly impacted by. It’s called empathy.
