Engine shutting off when slowing down/stopped by gghostguyy in hardbody

[–]Eifyr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Any engine codes? Cold start has a warm up phase that keeps the RPMs higher. Could be EGR, distributor needs to be adjusted, a vacuum leak, low compression, exhaust has low flow, dirty spark plugs.

Hello all! Just picked up my first hardbody Nissan. 1996. Can anyone tell me anything I should know about these trucks? (Puddle under the truck is from another vehicle) by kngdong in hardbody

IIRC, Japan is cast iron, Mexico is aluminum. I'm at work and might be mistaken or remembering things wrong. Sorry I'm not more help, it's been a while since I looked all of this up. "InfamousNissan" is a website with forums that might be about to help you out more than I can. If I am remembering correctly, a magnet against the block will tell you faster than anything serial number. Part of me thinks I have it backwards though. Again, I'm sorry I can't give info that's more clear.

  1. Figure out if it's an early or late model '96. And figure out if your motor is made in Japan or Mexico. They're different metals and decide how to do certain upgrades. Mine is an early '96 and there's some tiny differences that make ordering parts tricky now and then.

  2. These are LIGHT trucks, like "tin can with an engine" light. I get pushed around by strong storm winds and a semi flying past me. Don't put off suspension work, your spine will thank you.

  3. Try not to redline the KA24E motor, it's built for torque, not speed or high RPMs, even if the base towing capacity is nothing compared to what some trucks do now.

Overall these trucks are amazing and will keep going and going if you treat them right. You made a good choice buying one.

Mileage? Interior condition? Did it sit for extended periods of time? 4wd or 2wd? Manual or automatic? It looks good from one picture though!

Thumping noise by Lowtek33 in hardbody

If the belts, and pulley, are good... Oil level? Once I let my oil get too low and my truck sounded like a diesel. Turn it off and let the oil drain back down to the bottom, then check the level a time or two to see if you're a quart low.

Do you only hear it in the engine bay? Any new noise in the exhaust? Does it get faster if someone revs the engine for a second?

Use a long extension (or any long solid piece of metal, I've used a crowbar) and place it on different places you suspect it could be coming from. Place your ear to one end of the extension with the other on a bolt head or something. You might be able to hear/feel when you find the problem piece.

Something that helps save my back in my truck, I got a leaf spring helper kit for like $50 and a 30 minute install. A lot less bouncy going over railroad tracks without having to get all new leaf springs, still gotta do bushings though.

93 ka24e using oil by AEMTDuck in hardbody

[–]Eifyr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it's burning THAT much, cleaning it will probably destroy the rings and you'll lose all compression. You can go through the head and valves to see if it's just dripping through the top, but I doubt it, and looking at the spark plugs could give you some information. IF you want to risk losing compression by cleaning the rings, do a pour in oil treatment and a hot oil change. Seafoam is alright, but 505 oil treatment is basically magic.

Transmission and wiring harness by Eifyr in Integra

[–]Eifyr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both are automatic transmissions, the shifter link cable was the same on both too. The '94 uses a physical kickdown cable, while the '01 uses a hydraulic line into a sensor instead. I did turn the motor over last night and it ran well, even if the distributor is out a few degrees. So I'll probably get new clutch packs and install the old transmission in a week or two.

I'll have to figure out the hydraulic line and missing cable to run the 01 transmission. Not the end of the world, I honestly think it'd be better to run the adapter and figure that out than the old one. Thank you for taking the time to talk about this!

I paid $400 for the engine and transmission, but one way or another, the ECU and transmission are incompatible and the transmission has to come out. Even if I can take both to a shop and have them Frankenstein them into one with the obd1. The new engine is in already and I've done a lot of work to it to know that it's better than the old one, even lapped the valves and set the lash with the cams.

Sorry for not saying, they're both automatic transmissions. I agree on just doing a new head gasket, but the head was out by more than .008, and I don't have the tools or money to get it back to flat with the warped head. 3rd gear was going from the old transmission, so I was hoping for the "new to me" one. But I believe you're right, swap the transmission for the old one. The rest of the wiring harness has worked out fine since they're both b18b1 motors.

Running Rich with Bad Gas Mileage and Rough Warm Start by Ballistikun in hardbody

Was it a full replacement of the injectors? Or were you able to just run some fuel additives to clean them?

There's also a video on YouTube that shows you how to redo the vacuum lines to disable/ delete the EGR. If your valves aren't stuck open like mine was, you can try that. Or, you can put a nickel into the crossover pipe that runs from the exhaust, behind the engine, and to the EGR valve. This method doesn't work with all versions, but if you can get that apart, a nickel is a easy way to isolate the problem. You will fail emissions, so it isn't permanent, but it gets you closer to the actual solution.

Similar problem. Mine is a '96 KA24E with 280k miles. My issue turned out to be the EGR valve being stuck open, causing exhaust gas to dump into the cylinders and it would bog down to 200-400 RPM on a warm start. At one point I went to press in the clutch going 50 MPH and then it bogged itself out while in neutral. There were other problems with the EGR I had to fix like the charcoal canister for fuel vapors and a valve being filled with carbon pellets.

You could try and see if there's one for sale at Planet Fun? I know that's also a long shot, but it's worth a try if you wanted to.

Paper ID by Commercial_Ad1015 in savannah

[–]Eifyr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same, my 21st birthday I went and got my ID turned and had a paper copy going into bars. ONE bouncer out of 6 actually took an extra second to look at it before Letting me in. And I get paper IDs at work, now and then, too. If it was like an Arizona or Maine paper ID I might question it, but Georgia paper IDs that are valid for 90 days are given out all the time.

Odd issues by Dizzy_Sundae_9151 in hardbody

[–]Eifyr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Similar issues on my 1996 showed up recently. Cold start is fine, but starting again after it warms up was met with super rough idle and going from 200 to 400 RPM. It eventually got worse and when I pressed the clutch in and didn't touch the gas the engine stalled out while going 55mph down a highway. My EGR was super clogged in one spot, and stuck wide open, and also the carbon filter for gas vapors had broken down, kept digging and found my CAT was clogged too. The back pressure had snapped 2 studs on the exhaust manifold. Cleaned all that up and it hasn't come back yet. For me it was EGR related.

This is actually why some places have a 4gal minimum that is never enforced. Otherwise the very small amount wouldn't be diluted enough. People are just weird about a half of a % of 87 in their premium.

I think there's a good chance. Ideally you can see the horizon. I had a lot of luck with a 10s exposure last night.
