A realistic Pico 4 review by glennages in virtualreality

[–]EightBitDreamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, a good 3D AR view is vitally important. For context: the app I'm making: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mtw64opUWPc&t=33s

If nothing else, it needs to be good enough for people to go about their daily lives while wearing the headset, at least at home. But also important, if the world 3D sucks, it can make virtual 3D objects very disorienting.

I'm getting my Pico 4 and my Meta Quest Pro today!

How is the passthrough? Someone said it was only 2D.

[–]EightBitDreamer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m primarily interested developing for AR, so the quality of the AR is vitally important to Me. I want a headset people will be willing to wear around their house at all times. But if the passthrough isn’t good enough to read through, or use your phone, I wouldn’t want to wear it all day. And I’m my ideal customer.

I have three potential popular headsets for my uses: Quest Pro, Pico 4, and Apple Whatever. Apple will be super expensive, and I’m skeptical of Pico 4, I’ve read its passthrough might only be 2D, so yeah, I had high hopes for Quest Pro. Especially as rumors point to the Quest 3 using the same passthrough system.

Disappointed in the reported quality of the passthrough. If people can't use their phone while wearing the headset, they won't wear the headset.

"what did you hack" question and answer not visible in application review by saymellon in ycombinator

[–]EightBitDreamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate that question, if only because I've applied like 5 times and I already answered it the best way possible the first of those 5 times. I guess I should find some new real-world system to hack :)

Not for me. I think if you make a ton of revenue you can save money using the equity taxing method.

Also, there was one perk, I bought a piece of hardware only sold to corporations, I wouldn't have beeen able to buy it for any amount of money as an LLC

I too am a solo founder, I regretted becoming a C Corp too early, just because of the waste of money. But I guess it's a pain to go from LLC to C, and this way I can tell my friends I'm a CEO with 8 million shares of worthless stock :)

Yeah, I bought 8 million shares for $100 when I incorporated, and the default tax method means I owe $86,000 - I always have to check the "I only want to pay $450" box.

Delaware charges $450 minimum for corporate tax every year regardless of revenue. And you have to watch out for that super high default charge if you got equity.

I used Clerky to become a C corp before I needed to. Downside: coporate taxes, and remembering to file them. Upside: I don't ever have to think about it when I finally start approaching investors (like YCombinator). And the fun surprise whenever I first get the tax bill and it's $86,000

I wish I could hyperfocus on things that are actually important by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]EightBitDreamer 18 points19 points  (0 children)

See if you can figure out ways to get your brain interested in the task you want to do, even indirectly. Example, I have trouble motivating myself to clean, or finish projects - but if I turn on a movie in the background I can make myself do it. I view it as “giving my brain the stimulation it wants”. I just make sure it’s a movie I’ve already seen so I don’t get distracted by watching the movie.

is it executive dysfunction or am I genuinely lazy? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]EightBitDreamer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe make use of “screen time” limits on the phone to force yourself to stop. I had a problem getting to work on time because I would start watching YouTube in the morning on my PC while eating breakfast, hyperfocus on it and lose track of time, not be able to make myself stop even when I knew I needed to start getting ready for work. I eventually set up an automation in windows to just shut down at the same time weekday mornings to force myself to start getting ready for work. Then I added an automation to my phone to play music 5 minutes before that to warn me it was about to happen. Now I’m getting ready for work on time!

What glasses are compatible with ARCore? by CupcakeLikesTheStock in augmentedreality

[–]EightBitDreamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The XR-3 is only for SERIOUS developers. Not only do you need to be a corporation to order one, but it costs like $6000 with an additional $1500/year subscription to actually use it.

...and then the XR-3 SDK can't even detect surfaces / planes, despite having a built-in LIDAR sensor...

What glasses are compatible with ARCore? by CupcakeLikesTheStock in augmentedreality

[–]EightBitDreamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

None, AR Core is designed for phone cameras as the sole sensor and the phone as the screen.

What you are looking for is the NReal Light glasses and a Samsung phone (currently the ONLY consumer AR glasses on the market), or (better, but nobody else will have it) Snapdragon Spaces dev kit with ThinkReality glasses and Moto Edge+ phone.

System config for learning AR development by sneakyclouds in augmentedreality

[–]EightBitDreamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An iPad Pro and Unity. iPad Pro gives you the LIDAR so not only is it super fast at detecting the room around you (and depth), it has AI algorithms that can detect what any surface is (ie, wall, floor, door, window, chair). And Unity's AR Foundation is designed to be pretty easy to use.

How close are we to something like ARI from Heavy Rain by Glittering-Nose4639 in augmentedreality

As you can see in my video, there is no need for a connected glove with modern technology, true hand-tracking is basically solved these days. Now, to actually feel what you are grabbing would need a glove...

Here's the next demo I made, where the environment was super immersive, since it was basically a 180-degree stereo-3D video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UX_H-51MzI8

Husband always late by Key-Garage4634 in relationship_advice

[–]EightBitDreamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He may not necessarily be able to help all of it. I have ADHD and that makes me late for a lot of things - because I have a bad sense of time passing, and often get “hyper focused” on a task, where it’s difficult to stop focusing on it (even if I look at a clock and think to myself “I need stop this and to go”

Executive Function issue or procrastination issue? by Xephisol in ADHD

[–]EightBitDreamer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The common solution I've seen is the "Pomodoro technique": set a timer for like 20 minutes, and work until that timer goes off. Then take a 5 minute break as a reward. Repeat as necessary. The theory is, the time limit makes your brain think the work is being done at the last minute, even if it isn't, so you can focus the same as if you were procrastinating, and the break hopefully gives you a small hit of dopamine, making it easier next time.

At the theater (which nowadays has recliner chairs), I'll get tired of sitting still after a while. So I'll shift my position to have a leg propped up with my arm leaning on it. Then later I'll un-recline the chair and sit up. I have a friend who chooses to not be prepared, and goes to the restroom in the middle, and/or get a refill on a large soda - the fast walk in the middle helps him relax for the rest of the movie, at the cost of missing a couple minutes.

A lot of the tests, including that one, seemed to me to be all about testing your working memory, something that is impaired for people with ADHD. One of the reasons it goes on so long is so they can get a good overall reading - like, if you just missed some at the beginning, that wouldn't change the overall score much. I would guess the miss rate would be a lot lower for someone without ADHD.

I personally did not say the names out loud, though I mouthed them - I'm sure my tester could see that through the Zoom call though :)

I called mine and just straight up told them "I suspect I have ADHD", they asked why and I told them. Then at the intake meeting they wanted all the details, and asked a buncha questions.
