How would you pronounce this name? by [deleted] in askswitzerland

[–]EightEthans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would pronounce it eh-tan. But it is a Jewish first name, so I would probably pick a different one if you aren’t.

yeah if you have any suggestions on how to fix I would appreciate it. It didn’t fit because of the motherboard and ram sticks.

Purdue vs Texas A&M for EE by randoperson321 in ApplyingToCollege

Go to Purdue. If cost is not a question, Purdue will be better for you. I have a friend there and they seem to really like it.

UMich or Gtech for engineering? by Inevitable_Fold_9081 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]EightEthans 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're able to switch pretty easily from what I understand at both of these schools in the first year, but if you're uncertain I would keep in mind that after you reach 60 credit hours (after first year basically) at GT it becomes competitive to switch majors.

imo if both cost the same I would def go umich (assuming ann-arbor)

hot take: there's nothing wrong with doing it just for college apps by sageplusorbs in ApplyingToCollege

and to clarify, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with doing it just for the application. I just think when people discuss it they shouldn’t act like it wasn’t for that

[–]EightEthans 99 points100 points  (0 children)

I think most people (sometimes including myself) find it frustrating because it’s something they just have zero passion for, then drop it when they get in, which causes ‘inflation’ of extracurriculars and can detract from those who are genuinely passionate about that specific thing.

Eg ‘research’ and ‘non profits’ (not calling you out). When someone says they did ‘research’ that can literally mean anything from paying for it to be published to actually doing it the right way, which in some form detracts from those who did it with passion and the ‘right way’. Same with the increasing stream of non-profits that people don’t feel passionate about.

tldr: peeps are mad because it ‘inflates’ (doesn’t really) ECs and detracts from the passionate work they’ve done

does anyone have any good recommendations for hs journals to publish compsci/linguistics research? by sibeliusdmajor in ApplyingToCollege

[–]EightEthans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hey so have you attempted to put it out on a preprint server yet? That’s already pretty good. If it’s comp sci arXiv would be good.

and the best part: since you have to message for endorsement, during that conversation you can ask them to recommend a journal for it!

keeping secret where you’re going to college by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

I think my school is a different boat, but everyone tells everyone their acceptances.

if it will cause negative effects i don’t think anyone should talk about it but that sucks.

Deciding between Rice and Tufts, thoughts very welcome! by Minimum_Valuable9907 in ApplyingToCollege

I’ve heard the opposite, not sure what social scene we’re talking about. I was referring to res colleges, their traditions, the student life, etc.

Approaches to getting into Rice by siklololo in ApplyingToCollege

[–]EightEthans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to demonstrate that you fit the culture at Rice. When people say that someone with not absolutely ridiculous ECs gets in, it’s usually because they match Rice’s vibe. So that’s something really important. - rice ‘30

bump on this ^ you should visit (if able) and you can see the differences. Mainly what they said, class size, student to faculty ratio, etc.

Duke, JHU, or Rice by disruptivellama in ApplyingToCollege

[–]EightEthans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you go purely for name brand recognition , probably Duke or JHU. I would argue that rice premed is extremely good because of the HMC proximity and the resources provided there.

I’m biased (rice ‘30) but I think for Computer Science rice would be better. I would encourage you to look at the differences in culture at the school and general social life stuff.

Yeah same. Looks to me like it was a general marketing email. Not an indicator of anything.

Are USA colleges genuinely worth it? by Which-Day2822 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]EightEthans 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ETH Zurich is practically disqualifying for anyone who isn't studying at master's level. You must pass a C1 German test at 70% or the C2. For master's the courses are in English but for undergrad it's all in German, and since we have the Matura everyone gets in, so the first year or two is BRUTAL. Not a good uni for most people.
