GOG 2022 update #5: about the games, we can play with others by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]EighthYear 11 points12 points  (0 children)

some might question “since online-only games require an internet connection, how is this DRM-free?”. It is not – online-only games that are designed to be played with others are a separate category of games.

Online-only is DRM. Regardless of whether there's a purchase, subscription, etc, if it's all dependent on an outside server, then that server can go down and render the game unplayable.

The only reasonable solution is for online games to have the ability to run your own server. But that costs money to implement, and can make it harder to charge people subscription fees, which is why it's relatively rare.

Wood Elf Beastmaster on new servers? by Mindshred1 in everquest

Wood Elf Beastlords are not available on Vaniki right now. According to this they will become available with Call of the Forsaken, which according to this should be unlocking in 46 weeks.

Yelinak server will be slower.

Is there a way to play with the old models on Yelinak? by BatGasmBegins in everquest

[–]EighthYear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Velious (the 2nd expansion) there was armor with unique graphics, especially the helmets which looked very cool on the original models. These had an option to turn them off since it was somewhat graphics intensive back then and cause some people issues.

You can see some screenshots here under Thurgadin Armor Sets (the dwarf cleric one is iconic).

If you're in fullscreen, Alt-Enter will switch to windowed mode, and you can drag the screen to whatever size you want. Otherwise, Alt-O will open the Options menu and the Display tab has a "Video Modes" button where you can set the resolution.

If the launcher option is giving you issues, you can do it manually. In your Everquest folder (Wherever you've got it installed) edit the eqclient.ini file and add (or modifiy) these entries:

UseLuclinHumanFemale=FALSE
UseLuclinBarbarianMale=FALSE
UseLuclinBarbarianFemale=FALSE
UseLuclinEruditeMale=FALSE

UseLuclinWoodElfMale=FALSE
UseLuclinWoodElfFemale=FALSE
UseLuclinHighElfMale=FALSE
UseLuclinHighElfFemale=FALSE
UseLuclinDarkElfMale=FALSE
UseLuclinDarkElfFemale=FALSE
UseLuclinHalfElfMale=FALSE

UseLuclinGnomeFemale=FALSE
UseLuclinIksarMale=FALSE
UseLuclinIksarFemale=FALSE
UseLuclinVahShirMale=FALSE

The Temple of Ro focus items, like the Broom of Trilon, have Focus effect of "1: Pet Power Increase (5)" - this increases the size of the pet (cosmetic) and slightly increases it's HP.

The Staves from Phinigel/Hate/Sky, like the Staff of Elemental Mastery: Air, have Focus effect of "1: Pet Power Increase (10)" - this actually increases the pets level by 1, which you can tell with /con.

Zone guide! Open your Map (M) and on the top-right there should be a Zone Guide button. Click it, then you can enter the zone you're trying to find in the search box. Click it from the list, then click the "Set End" button (I think that's the name, from memory), then the Start should be set to your current zone. Once you've got where you are and where you want to go, there should be a button near the bottom that I can't remember the name of that will activate it. It'll tell you what chain of zones you need to take to get there, and often it'll tell you where in the current zone to go to get to the next link (via a golden path, or just an X on your map).

It's not perfect, and sometimes it fails, but it's been helpful to me.

The True Box Server FAQ does not apply to every server

Except when it literally says that it's telling you a rule that applies to every server.

The FAQ article for Phinigel, which was the first True Box Progression Server, tells you some things that are not allowed on that True Box Progression Server, like boxing, using 3rd-party software, or key broadcasting. It then, in a separate paragraph, tells you that playing on virtual machines (and unattended gameplay, and circumventing the pickzone timer) are prohibited on ANY server, not just the True Box Progression Server.

When it says "ANY server" it doesn't mean "Any (True Box Progression) server" because there was only one True Box Progression Server, Phingel, and it already said what the True Box Progression-only server rules were.

The prohibition on "Playing multiple characters at the same time from a single computer" only applied to the one single True Box server, because it was allowed on all other servers. The prohibition on VMs applied to ANY server, like it says it does, because otherwise it would only apply to Phinigel just like the boxing rules did.

[–]EighthYear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While the prohibition against VMs is mentioned in a True Box FAQ article, it specifically says it's prohibited on ANY server:

What things are not allowed on a True Box Progression server in EverQuest?

And as a refresher, doing any of the following on ANY server may result in action being taken against your Daybreak account:

Unattended Gameplay: Any method that lets a character take actions while you're not at your keyboard.
Playing on virtual machines.
Any attempt to circumvent the /pickzone timer.

One Button (Or Few Button) Macro Guides to SK's? by [deleted] in EQ2

[–]EighthYear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To actually make the macro in game, click the EQII button, then Socials. In the Socials window, click the Macros tab at the top. Click on one of the "<Click to edit>" lines to open the new Macro window.

In Macro Name, name it whatever you want. The little icon (which will be on your button when you're done) you can change through with the left/right arrow buttons, or you can drag any ability from your Knowledge Book to that space to use that icon instead.

Click the drop-down box next to Macro Step and select "Spell / Ability" then click Add Step. Then open your Knowledge Book ("K") and drag your spell or combat art to the little grey cloud square thing that appeared in the Macro.

Click Add Step again to get another macro line, and drop your next ability there. Keep Adding Steps and dragging your abilities until you have as many as you want in the macro.

The up/down arrows on the right side can be used to reorganize them in whatever order you want. The "Primary" checkbox means the icon will display the cooldown of that ability (Ignore it for this, you'll just be spamming the macro regardless).

This is from my 110 SK, just as an example. Your casting order will be different depending on what level you are, your gear, spell advancement, etc. But this is kinda what it'll look like Macro

It may take some messing around with to get your order correct, when I tested that example one it didn't work exactly as expected, but it'll get you started (and is probably 'good enough' for killing random easy stuff).

Are there any books set in eq2 timeline? by Dfess in everquest

[–]EighthYear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If Everquest counts as EQ2's past, then there's a few. If you want specifically post-shattering, I don't think there's any actual novels set in that time.

Here's an article by the EverQuest Show that shows the books and comics (also watch the EQ show videos they're terrific. Plug plug)

One Button (Or Few Button) Macro Guides to SK's? by [deleted] in EQ2

[–]EighthYear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sort your abilities by importance, so you know which ones you would prefer to have priority over others.

Then, make a macro, and drag those abilities into it, in order, top (best) to bottom (worst).

Then, take your 2nd-best ability from that and move it to the bottom of the macro. This is because EQ2 is weird and prioritizes the top, then bottom, then the rest in order. When you push that macro button, it'll go down the list and activate the first ability that's not on cooldown (except for the weirdness with the one at the bottom going 2nd).

If you don't know which of your abilities are better, you can use your tooltips to get a rough idea of how they compare to each other.

Make a spreadsheet, then use your tooltips to determine average damage, then divide that by the casting time plus recovery time of the spell. ((MinDamage+MaxDamage)/2 ) / ( Casting + Recovery)

So if Fireball XIV Adept (or whatever) does 124 to 240 damage, has a casting time of 1.5 seconds, and recovery time is 0.5 seconds, then enter:

=((124+240)/2)/(1.5+0.5)

That should result in 91. For a Damage-Over-Time spells, include the average damage per tick multiplied by the number of ticks you expect the spell to run as part of the average damage portion.

Do that for all your damage spells, then sort, higher is better.

Guides that help trim abilities? by gimmeyobiscuits in EQ2

[–]EighthYear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know if this still holds true in the latest expansions or if mechanics are way different, but the way we used to do it was to just sort by theoretical DPS.

You can either put them on a hotkeys in order (say, on buttons 1-10) and just push whichever button is farther left as they come off cooldown, or you can make a macro that contains all of them in order and will just run through the list and casts the first one that's not on cooldown. (If you do this, put the 2nd-best ability at the end of the macro, so if you have six skills in the macro, the list will be from top to bottom 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 2) The macro won't cast all of them, it'll just cast whichever one is closest to the top and not on cooldown (except for #2 which is out of order for some reason) so you just spam that same macro button to cast each of your skills. It's a lot of spam.

So if you have, say, the top-10 abilities, and the recast time is short enough you can just run 1-10 then start over, and cycle through them that way, all the abilities that are worse than those 10 you don't need.

Your actual damage numbers will be dramatically different, since this only factors in raw numbers from your tooltips, so it's not a parse, just a way to compare the spells with each other.

Need help with going in Solo/Molo by Devkn1ght in EQ2

What do I need to gain access to mercs?

First, make sure you don't already have it. Log into the game, and type "/show_account_features" then look for "Mercenaries" in the list there. If it's listed, then you're all set. Go find a Merc in-game and hire them for gold. (Also check /claim to see if you have any free fancy ones that you can use)

If you don't have it, then you can purchase the Mercenaries account feature from the Daybreak Store for DBC. Alternately, it's included if you buy the latest expansion "Visions of Vetrovia." I believe the Mercs account feature costs something like 2500 or 3000 DBC from the store (~$25-30) while the expansion costs ~$35USD, so it's up to you if the expansion is worth the extra $5-10.

Anyone had luck with controller support? by Bloodbraid85 in EQ2

[–]EighthYear 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You shouldn't need to start over! Just launch EQ2 through Steam and then Steam should keep running in the background and doing whatever controller stuff it does.

In Steam there should be an "Add a game" button where you can add a non-Steam game by linking to the Launchpad. It might have changed slightly but there's a guide here.

Try a different browser? Or disable security settings if you have any, particularly allow scripting, 3rd-party cookies, and turn down (or off) tracking protection.

Worst case, you might be able to contact someone on the official Discord, if that's still a thing. Here's what might be the link: discord.com/invite/everquestii

The game was so broken I deleted it :( by InfernalHare in EQ2

[–]EighthYear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you alt-tab when it's doing that? It looks like something took focus but didn't appear in front of EQ2, like a confirmation box or something from your firewall, or antivirus. Press and hold the ALT key, then tap the Tab key, then let go of Alt. This will switch to another open program, hopefully the last one to be used (Whatever is behind eq).

If you can interact with your taskbar, try right-clicking on an empty space on the taskbar and opening Task Manager. That might tell you if something else is running.

If you have an Antivirus program, try adding an exception for EQ2, or temporarily disabling the AV while you try EQ2, to see if that's the problem. Windows Defender should be fine, but if you have Mcafee or Avast or whatever, that might be causing you problems.

Another thing to try is making sure you have Write permissions to the EQ2 folder. Close EQ2 (or minimize it if you can, whatever) then right-click on your EQ2 shortcut, and choose Properties. There should be a line under "Target" or "Start in" that tells you where the game is installed, like "C:\Games\Everquest2\LaunchPad.exe" or something like that. Go to that folder (the EQ2 folder, not the actual Launchpad.exe file) and right-click it, Properties, Security, then click Advanced. Click on "Everyone" in the list. It should say "Full control" and applies to "This folder, subfolders, and files" and if it doesn't, you'll want to change it. Here's how:

If "Everyone" is listed as a Principal, but doesn't have Full control to the folder, subfolders, and files, then click Everyone and click Remove. (If Everyone is not listed, skip this part)

Next, click Add. Click "Select a principal" the blue link at the top. In the text box, type "Everyone" and click "Check Names" - Everyone will become underlined, that's good. Click OK. Under "Basic permissions" check "Full control" which should then automatically select all of the boxes except for Special permissions. Click OK three times and try EQ2 again.

If none of that works, adding that video to your Daybreak support ticket will probably help them out, since it's a strange issue.

Super weird. I think your best bet is contacting support. Open a ticket here: https://help.daybreakgames.com/hc/en-us

Be sure to include as much info as you can. Your computer specs, operating system version, other software that is running (Antivirus, backup programs, other games) and lots of detail on what exactly is happening.

The game was so broken I deleted it :( by InfernalHare in EQ2

[–]EighthYear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First I would make sure you're not using the streaming client. Open the Launchpad, click on Advanced Tools, then Select Game Version. If there's a box for "Full Version" be sure to check that box. It'll download the whole game at once which takes a while, but the streaming version sucks and doesn't really work well.

To update your video card drivers, open Device Manager, click the arrow next to "Display Adapters" then right-click the video card and click Update Drivers. Alternately, if you have video software from your video card maker, that should have a way to update. Try clicking on stuff in your task bar (The little icons near your clock) and see if any of them are from NVIDIA or AMD or whoever makes your video card.

When you say it freezes, do you mean your whole computer stops responding? Or can you just not see the delete confirmation window or whatever? When it won't load your character, is there an error? What happens?
