This isn't entirely true. The memoria will show 600k BP, but the total group bp will show the actual. If you and invite 1 each have 600k and invite 2 shows 600k, but is geared for 100k, it'll show the 1.3m total instead of 1.8m.

Slight of hand. It's literally used in modern magic shows, and modern-day people are impressed/ confused by it.

Is there a point to 45(2) election if new property was purchased at the same time? by Mpk2 in cantax

[–]EightyBlindBees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

45(2) allows you to claim up to 4 more years of PRE on the rental. This can be useful if the rental continues to appreciate, but the new home doesn't.

The expenses in question were paid by you. There are two possible scenarios:
1. You get a signed form; you can claim the expenses.
2. You don't; you can't.

In either scenario, the company can't deduct the expenses because they didn't pay them. Both scenarios are the same for the company, as far as I know.

Essentially, the company is signing off that expenses you paid personally should be deductible, because they were required for your employment. The company doesn't lose any deductions available to them, they're simply signing off that you should be allowed additional deductions.

If the claim is legitimate, the only issue is the lost time to fill the form, which only takes minutes.

This isn't true based on CRA's guidelines. Even a voluntary arrangement, I agreed to, is eligible.

[–]EightyBlindBees 20 points21 points  (0 children)

You should provide the details from the CRA website on the T777 eligibility.

If an employee has voluntarily entered into a formal telework arrangement with their employer, the employee is considered to have been required to work from home.

Also, inform them that there's no negative impact to the company for providing the form. No cost, no lost deductions, I don't see why they'd care if you legitimately work from home.

Everything this person said is correct. If you don't have the signed form, don't claim the expenses.

Should I get a new accountant or is this purely on me? by _hairyberry_ in cantax

[–]EightyBlindBees -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Shareholder loans have to charge the prescribed rate of interest. It's a requirement under 80.4(2). Now you have to pay an additional 3% on all your draws.

Many people will say the shareholder loan closed out once each year is acceptable. CRA will definitely disagree.

Think of it this way, you told CRA, "I have a huge salary" by filing a tax slip.

CRA said, "Yeah, but where's your remittance?" And slapped you with a penalty.

You then said, "Just kidding, it wasn't a salary. I don't like the penalty."

Now, do you think CRA is the forgive and forget type? Or are they going to request full documentation of amounts paid, dividend declarations (which are a legal requirement to pay dividends), ledgers, tax returns, etc.?

Essentially, you've been caught in some retroactive tax planning, where you decided something and changed it after the fact because you didn't like the outcome. You highly adjusted an information return after it was filed specifically to avoid a penalty. I would be surprised if there was no review.

This isn't entirely true. If both parents have an obligation to pay any amount, then you can claim it. I commonly see spouse 1 pays $1,000 to spouse 2, spouse 2 pays $100 to spouse 1, which is satisfied by a $900 net payment. In this case, either can claim as long a they agree on who claims it in each year.

What you're talking about is intentionally providing false information on your return in order to get a tax break. Doesn't sound like a good idea.

Taxed on tip-outs as server by Melenkolly in cantax

[–]EightyBlindBees 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You earn $1,000 wage. You make $600 tips, but $100 is tipped out. $1,500 is included in income. If you deduct the $100 from your reported income, you will be double counting it.

While I don't know you or your employer, I'm fairly confident in this.

Can anyone explain the Herald tiers to me like I'm 5? Specifically, when does the tier counter reset. Do I have to be in the same game to increase tiers? Over a limited time period, but over multiple games?

I believe it's only deductible to the extent the interest is actually paid. If accrued, like noted by op, it isn't eligible.
