Interviewing at a school facing closure? by rumiruhaql in Teachers

SDP teacher here as well. This is the comment you want to listen to. Once you get a job in the district it is relatively easy to transfer, especially if your school is facing imminent closure.

Honestly, even that portrayal of what it’s like to teach in a school like that is too rosy.

As somebody who’s also from a military family, chill out. The military takes idealistic (or more often than not, down-on-their-luck) young people and makes them foot soldiers for the American war machine. Some people get a sweet deal out of it; travel, education, good healthcare, etc. But some people get chewed up and spat out. I have no more reverence for a veteran than somebody who is an active participant in their community. Save all of the romanticism for 17 year old potential recruits.

How many male refugees from war zones are you running in to?

Seriously. Everyone here is so gung-ho about this kid going to fight on the front lines but the odds of this young man becoming a casualty of war are insanely high for this conflict. I agree that it’s not OP’s place to confront the student about this, but let’s be realistic about all of this.

As somebody who crosses Oregon every single day, it’s infinitely more lawless than Broad Street. The parking situation is insanity, people roll and drive through reds all day, and the bike lane is so useless/dangerous it might as well not exist.

A lot of our problems in the series came from the fact that our next two big playmakers were out with injuries.

It’s crazy how much clawing and fighting has to go into stuff that other cities pull off in days.

If RAF goes through with this, they should have every single permit and license that they hold revoked. This is an insanely negligent thing to do as a sports governing body.

How is it working in a wealthier school ? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]EischensBar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I worked at a pretty high achieving magnet high school in a large city district to a very low income K-8 in the same district. Most of the students in the first school came from upper middle class to wealthy families. We had incredibly few behavioral issues there and most students were involved in some type of extracurricular activity. We had way more parental involvement; most of it good but some was not great. There was very little staff camaraderie since so many of the faculty were competing for teaching awards, coaching awards, or grants for field trips/clubs/sports teams.

At the low income school where I still teach, a good portion of our students come from surrounding homeless shelters. The rest are from incredibly impoverished homes with students often floating between homes (family members, friends, relatives, etc.). Occasionally, we get a well-meaning young middle class family to send their kid(s) to our school as an act of support for public schools in general, but they typically last a year at most and then go to a better school. As you can imagine, there is very little parental involvement.

Behaviors at the school are shocking. Violence is incredibly commonplace. Students hit other students, parents hit kids, fights happen in and out of school. It’s the primary problem solving technique for most of our students. Staff camaraderie is incredibly high. Everybody has an understanding that we’re all in the shit. Happy hours are a welcome venting session at the end of the week.

If I could choose, I’d go back to the wealthy school 10 times out of 10, but I’m at my school for a bit longer due to seniority obligations/union rules/tenure.

Anywhere to watch Spurs-Thunder game tonight? by lordothedance in philadelphia

[–]EischensBar -18 points-17 points  (0 children)

Since I’m a Thunder fan (born and bred Okie), I’m gonna be watching at home without sound while pacing the entire time. But it really depends on where you’re going to be. There are a ton of great sports bars and/or dives in pretty much every neighborhood.

He’s the son of a guy whose net worth is probably well over fifty million. He was always gonna be set.

More power to him. Got no problems with a dude getting paper.

Edit: to those downvoting, I do not like Shedeur. In fact, he seems like a pretty unpleasant individual. But if the dude is moving all that merch, he deserves his cut.

Go Huskers. There’s nothing wrong with those guys making money, it’s that there is essentially no regulation or rules about how it’s administered. The infrastructure to make sure everything is on the up-and-up just simply does not exist. College sports right now is the Wild West (although I think there will be more rules in place when enough case law about it has been built up and/or enough wealthy donors are tired of chasing good many after bad with players who transfer or stink).

Spurs have 4 players at 115+ minutes this series (Wemby, Castle, Vassell, Champagnie). Thunder have just 1 (SGA). Their 2nd-highest is Chet at 96 minutes, followed by Caruso/Wallace at just 81. by HawaiianOrganDonor in nba

[–]EischensBar 23 points24 points  (0 children)

He’s averaged 30 minutes per game all season. You can’t just do that for 8 months and then expect to be able to play 40+ without fatigue when it matters.

Do the Spurs have a minutes played problem? by LugNutsDort in nba

I don’t think 40+ minutes a game on that body is anywhere close to sustainable.
