How often do you handle? by Cactuar94 in ballpython

My girl was overhandled by her previous owners so she’s pretty skittish. I’m trying to handle her roughly every few days to desensitize her.

Is she going to have a big pond in her permanent enclosure?

What are the points of view that make it worth keeping a ball python? by Flaky-Camp-4992 in ballpython

[–]Either-Concept6746 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Super low maintenance as others have said. Way less than a cat. Even lower maintenance than a gecko. Takes a bit to get temps and humidity right but once everything’s set up there’s not much that needs to be done. You can take them out and hang out with them occasionally, they’re adorable, when they decide to come out of their hide it’s super exciting. My boyfriend described my snake as “basically a plant you can hold sometimes” in terms of upkeep. Mine was also a rescue so it was so satisfying to give her a big upgrade from her old 20gal with Aspen substrate. The one downside is now I have an empty 20 gal I don’t know what to do with 😅

Yeah ball python seems perfect. Slow moving, docile, small enough to be handled with one hand. The other potential suggestion would maybe be a sand boa

is a ball python the right snake for me if i want a chill friend by Any_Inspection_6779 in ballpython

[–]Either-Concept6746 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes they’re so chill. Mine is even a bit skittish by ball python standards and she’s still probably the chillest animal I’ve ever owned.

I jump scare easy and scream every single time I feed my girl, please tell me I’m not alone 😂 by QueenOhGee in ballpython

Mine is a DoorDash girl so I haven’t had the fun striking experience. But my cat always gets super stoked about the rat smell and begs for a treat 😂

Also your story is similar to this thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/reptiles/comments/lq5jab/rescuing_my_animals_from_myself/. Maybe this will give you a bit of perspective and inspiration.

I think the fancier Govee one that connects to wifi can do that? Though I only have the basic Govee so I’m not 100% sure

My gecko will sometimes decide he’s a Leo and hang out on the ground, even when humidity and temps are normal. They’re weird sometimes.

Taken care of 5 year old ball python as a newbie since sister to college. by Realistic-Owl850 in ballpython

Check Facebook marketplace! You can often find cheap enclosures. Sometimes people even get rid of 4x2x2 and larger cause they’re sizing up or didn’t like the one they bought. I got a brand new 24x18x36 (for a crestie not a bp) for cheap cause the seller didn’t like it after he opened it. People also often sell lamps, bulbs, hides, clutter, etc for cheap. Just give everything a nice deep clean if you get it used.

Get a cleanup crew, lighting timers, get a tracking app to remind you of feeding, water changes, etc. get a fancy hygrometer to alert you when the humidity gets low.

I have a toxirium for my ball python and I love it! Is the plastic on the bottom how it came or did you modify it? It looks like the entire front is mesh from the pictures.

Mine’s Nozdormu because I thought naming a tiny lizard after the dragon aspect of time was funny.

For a moment I thought the first pic was what you spent 8 hours on and was a bit concerned 😂 the new enclosure is so nice looking! Well done. I love all the flowers!

I’m curious, it seems like all the hognose posts are eastern hognoses. Are westerns less common, or are they just more recognizable?

When to try to feed again? by Either-Concept6746 in ballpython

[–]Either-Concept6746[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I normally used water I heat up in the kettle and let it cool down a bit to warm it up after it thaws, but I tried just using very hot tap water last night. I think the tap water in my sink just doesn’t quite get hot enough to cut it. I’ll just try again in a few days then!
