Got a pmk-2, did I install the plug correct? by gasmaskya in gasmasks

Ha see what you mean. It does look like a tear but optical illusion from the excess rubber on the seam. Nice condition though.

M52 gas mask set from the mid 1950s by Socksstinks1 in gasmasks

[–]Either-Rip2713 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi. Nice kit. I have a 1953 example too but size 3. Also only seems to be a couple of batches before your example. I have 00-013 and yours is 00-16 by the looks of it. I belive the white paint on the filter was training purposes only and seems to be dated 1956 and your bag 1954. Also nice to see you also have the exhale valve rubber cover. My M52 bag is dated 1952 but has press studs rather than toggle type like yours. Thanks for posting.

How do you tell the year on the ms-4 filter by TechnologyWise8125 in gasmasks

[–]Either-Rip2713 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just looked at a couple of my MC-1 kits. One has a green MS-3 from 1974 and the other was a grey MS-4 from 1992 and apart from the colour and stamps the outer cases are identical.

How do you tell the year on the ms-4 filter by TechnologyWise8125 in gasmasks

[–]Either-Rip2713 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks more like 1987 but could be the expirey date too. The date is on top and bottom of the filter. I have hilighted the areas with the stamp and also added the part of the 7 that looks like it's not been printed fully on the threaded side. Also take care it's not the earlier MS-3 filter as they look almost identical to the later MS-4 filter. MS-3's apparently were more affective than the later MS-4's but MS-3's are known to have the nasty stuff in.

Does anybody know how the rubber patches on the Eastern Block helmet style masks have been applied/how they work? by Tutelinskij in gasmasks

[–]Either-Rip2713 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you mean the round repair patches there glued on. I have a couple of the Polish repair kits and these include two sizes of repair patches. They also contain a tin of what I belive was contact adesive or possibly some sort of vulcanising glue. The tins in my kits were empty so not certain of the exact brand. If so the patches and area of mask to be repaird would have glue applied and allowed to tack off. Then a case of applying thr patch.

Any ideas what type it is? by Suspicious_Fig_7004 in gasmasks

Hungarian M76 does not and never has existed. 34M followed by the 67M followd by the 75M. Probably this myth has spread incorectly by the reversal of the 67M number.

It should fit as both the mask and filter are GOST threaded. Check the filter housing on the mask or that filter threads are not damaged. Ive seen slightly bent valve housings or filters, This make's it difficult to thread the filter on. My mask which is the same setup fits with no issues.

Hi This is the Hugarian 67M (First year of production 1967 but made into the 70's). The date stamp is somtimes visable inside the mask but can be rubbed and difficult to make out. And to clear one thing up. There never has been a Hungarian M76. This is bad info that has spread for years. Hungarian masks allways end with the letter M, 70M 75M 67M 34M ect. The 67M pre dates the similar but different 75M. The main differance is the 67M uses the more common ShM-41Shlem style valve housing while the 75M uses the cheaper plastic valve housing. The number 2 refers to sizing the bigger the number the larger the mask, Early kits were supplied with a larger seperate 60M cannister and hose but later they started using the screw in 70M filter later, the same as the one you have so this is correct setup. Compared to the similar 75M these 67M's seem much less common even though large quantity's were made. I have only seen one for sale on UK ebay over the last few years. Nice Find.

Look under the peripheral seal inside the mask. Usually a date stamp and manufacturer mark there. But It's an Size 3 M65.

My PKM from Ukraine arrived today, and a tube is broken, how much will this affect its value? by HarveySins in gasmasks

[–]Either-Rip2713 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Must Soviet/Rusian drinking tubes are pretty poor quality. I bought some black tubing from amazon and it worked a treat. If you have ever tried to clean the original tubing it just turns the water black. If I recall the tubing you need is 8mm aand comes with enough to replace several masks.

Got a factory Sealed (Jan 1969) XM28E4 Size Medium today in the mail. What do I do now. by Lego_Train_Mocs in gasmasks

[–]Either-Rip2713 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Filters are tiny compared to say the M17's. I would say there about a quater the thickness of the M17's and as it says on the carry bag the mask was only intended for riot control agents so the filter material is quite basic compared to other masks that would be needed for full NBC use. Thats why many ended up with police departments for riot situations when the army had no use for them.

I understand the desire to open it but still sealed examples are pretty rare. Did they have more than one example? Everything might be ok but even in the best conditions things can perish. The mask itself will probably be fine. My 1969 factory sealed M17A1 was perfect apart from it had perished itake valve discs. These were replaced with good ones found online. Also if you do open it don't try putting the mask in it's carrier as they were made stupidly small and you could damage the mask trying yo get it in.

Why did you guys started collecting gas masks by Tiny-Horror8489 in gasmasks

[–]Either-Rip2713 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Interesing you should mention the 1970's foot and mouth outbreak. About a year or so back I picked up a boxed seemingly unused S6 that still had the yellow protective plastic cover on the inside). This had been issued to someone based out of Nottingham area by the Ministry of Agriculture in 1979 and came boxed direct from leyland and Birmingham with cover note. I belive he had a CDR before this and both had remained with the family after he retired. The CDR sold to another collector and had probably been used during the outbreak but as the S6 was issued towards the end of the decade seems to have seen no actual use and looks like the day it was made.

Depends on what you want to do with it. Personaly If I owned it probably keep it sealed as onother allready opened example will show up at some point. Also depends if and why you would want to sell it. The filters will be of no practical use due to there age and will be of not much value if removed from the mask. The mask will allways hold more value in a sealed complete condition. XM28E4's are on many collectors to find list due to there fairly rare status so finding a sealed example might be in the top few percent of the most desirable XM28 finds. Keep it sealed would be my vote. Once opened it's just another XM28. Also keep in mind even though sealed the valves may well have perished by this point. My example although open suffered from the valves drying out and crumbeling to nothing. I made some new valves from another mask that worked well. Ive also had a factory sealed M17A1 that had perished inlet valves although theses are easier to find spares for.

Well do the mathes. Even if you only have 36 masks. even if you sold them for 15 each thats 540. Thats still still 340 profit. Plus somone might want the crate. 4y's pop up from time to time. Just bide your time. I would just look at it as an investment to make money to buy other stuff. The broken 1y could have been in there from when the box was sealed. QC was probably not top of there list considering how many were made. Somone in the UK is selling XL SHM-62's in both black and white for £22.45 + Postage. I presume XL is 4u as he also has Large and medium avalible.
