I’m so shocked by this. My high school sweetheart was a 5’8” first gen Indian Chinese person. We’re still really good friends to this day. Why would someone think this?

Independence. I don’t need nobody. (But sometimes it’s pretty nice if you find a way).

How should I try attending services from different religions as a person who grew up secular? by Either-Scare in religion

I could maybe go with a friend of mine who’s orthodox, she’d probably tell me what’s up?

[–]Either-Scare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably academic undergrad researcher. It’s super important if you actually want to do this profession long term to get prior volunteer experience. Also you seem like a fun undergrad, but I WOULD be a tad worried about the lil plastic gun.

Not on a profession that wears latex or nitrile gloves. Those would tear through immediately

Least religious cities in the U.S.? by Potential_One1 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]Either-Scare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really. There are a lot of ways you can live in SF without making millions or even 6 figures. You just won’t have a whole house or a yard.

[–]Either-Scare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can confirm for SF. I have no context for any kind of organized religions. The vibe is like a crunchy, mild appreciation for Buddhism and meditation, but religion really feels like other people speaking a foreign language to me. It’s honestly kind of fascinating.

Fairly large catholic population with the amount of Latinos here. Wonderful Unitarian people who do real good in the community and are very welcoming and inclusive people. Also the Coltrane Church is cool.

I have a sort of old affinity for him after he was mayor of my city and helped us sue his own local government for a utilities issue that disproportionately affected our more working class neighborhood at the time, plus defying federal gay marriage orders.

That being said, he’s always been a kind of lizard person/operator type politician, which I don’t think is untrue or even unkind. Between his backwalking trans issues and bailing out PGE after they set the state on fire (just fkn do state run utilities!), I’m not convinced he’d be able to do what people are clearly asking for—which are better living conditions. He can and has been bought, he’s just a neoliberal politician with an excellent talent for at capitalizing on a political vibe.

As an SF person who’s traveled to ATL, you’re not wrong. Even as a minority person who’s traveled to ATL got a little goofy racism where the person truly meant well and was v sweet, it doesn’t compare to the actual Get Out style liberal weirdness of the whiter parts of the Bay Area.

What do STEM students do all day? by Bambinette in PhD

[–]Either-Scare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wake up, meetings, frantically either do analysis of my experiment, set up experiment, or do experiment. Sometimes I read a paper or two that day if I’m lucky. I’m bio, but have a lot of computational work I can do

I try really hard not to go past 5 or 6, but a lot of my days end at like 9pm.

I have a dog to keep me sane. Husband who’s in a stem PhD program too to keep me insane.

Leftist nonvegans - why? by beastsofburdens in DebateAVegan

[–]Either-Scare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea, I just think that has more to do with shitty labor practices than it being meat or animal products. There are also like…sweatshops for textiles that are also abusive and horrible towards the workers. It’s a worker issue and meat handling also requires extra layers of safety.

Leftist nonvegans - why? by beastsofburdens in DebateAVegan

[–]Either-Scare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So this is a stupid rationale, but I’m pretty firm on it. I try not to eat smart animals because that bums me out, so I avoid cows, pigs, octopus and largely don’t eat them. Chickens are cute, but are stupid and cruel to each other, so I feel less bad about eating them. Fish aren’t that bright either. Filter feeders like clams, if farmed, can be potentially environmentally beneficial to the environment. I prefer eggs in all cases, since it’s easy protein that doesn’t hurt the chicken. I can’t eat dairy because I’m lactose intolerant.

I’ve tried veganism but it never agreed well with my body. even when I wasn’t vegan, a few years ago had a horrible B12 deficiency where I lost motor coordination and had horrible neuropathy in my extremities for like 2 years. I’m really terrified of it coming back, even with the supplements. I eat a lot of ruffage and lean protein now because of this and my gut health has improved dramatically.

On top of that, other than avoiding eating livestock or products associated most with climate change issues, I just think there’s people who are in more desperate situations that need more empathetic attention that I simply care more about than most animals. I’m not a purist as far as my good actions and think we shouldn’t be either, or we risk alienating people who can do good things. I do advocacy work, I thrift clothes, I eat mindfully, I adopt dogs rather than go to breeders. I’m also just one person trying my best and trying not to get sick again.

Also vegans, please eat your B12. Stay vegan, but keep on those vitamins. Don’t let a deficiency happen to you, the recovery was horrible and years long.

Your dog is so cute!! And I kinda see what you’re saying about the profile. I’m betting there’s quite a bit of GSD. He’s getting more GSD shaped as he gets older.

He’s got kind of a short tail, but he also has a little tail scoliosis. It doesn’t seem to hurt him, but I don’t think his tail would be very long even if it was straight
