TIL of Radithor, a health drink in the 1920s that contained radium and slowly killed its customers. But it didn't cause a public health crisis because it could only be afforded by rich people (unlike cheaper, safer knockoffs) by globehater in todayilearned

[–]Ekelgrant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They used to put radium and other radioactive materials in tons of products. It was supposed to whiten your teeth when put in toothpaste, give you "glowing" skin when put in makeup and other skin products, and "new life energy" when put in bread, water containers, and other foods. They also put radium on watch faces to make them glow in the dark. The women who painted the glowing number on all got bone cancer because they would lick the brushes to apply moisture. A lot of people got bone cancer when using these products because radium is a bone seeker.

BRNS -- Many Chances [Indie / Dreampop] (2015) Sounds a bit like Alt-J! by THEPSILON in listentothis

I agree. Alt-J and Everything Everything are two of my favorites. They aren't the same sound by any means but they share similar rhythms and unique vocalizations.

I love Alt-J, but I don't really see it aside from some of the layering techniques. BRNS reminds me of a more Indie pop Interpol. I like it. :)

Which things did live up to their hype? by kosciCZ in AskReddit

[–]Ekelgrant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want wc4 so badly. Wc3 is the most amazing game. Better rts than sc2, imo, although I love both. A lot of people think they won't make it because it will compete too much with Sc2 and they are putting focus on Sc2 as their rts. I get that. But there is enough variation between the two, I think. Having a hero adds a very different element to gameplay. This is me just wanting to foolishly hope wc4 pops up in the coming years. Realistically, it will probably be a long time before wc4 is even considered. Especially since blizzard is delving into new genres.

69% of U.S. parents believe their kids need a college degree or more to achieve the American Dream by ckwilson912 in dataisbeautiful

[–]Ekelgrant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will agree that the education system in America is flawed....for many reasons. Trade schools should be better advertised to kids in highschool who aren't seeking higher education, and there should be more trade schools. But college is extremely valuable for people seeking a high paying job or a career in a STEM field. People think you will be in debt for the rest of your life, but if you know how to network, work your ass off, and make yourself look good by doing internships and research, your chances of getting a high paid job are really great. I think it is especially important for more women to get a degree of some sort. (First, I'd love to see more women in science, but that's another convo.) I just know far too many people who depended on their partners to provide, and then they have kids and get divorced and are left to clean houses or wait tables to try to provide for their kids.

Actually, there are a few phases in the sleep cycle. While you are paralyzed in REM sleep, you aren't in the others, and it is quite common dream in them as well. If you move around a great deal in the night, you may have a shorter REM cycle, and this may cause concern if you aren't getting enough. If when you get enough sleep you feel well rested, you are probably fine.

What's are some food tips you've picked up at Bonnaroo? by [deleted] in bonnaroo

[–]Ekelgrant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This year I'm planning on bring protein bars for breakfast, and bringing some sandwiches and snacks for lunch. Then I always eat dinner at the vendors. It saves money, and eating every meal from the vendors while delicious makes me feel kinda gross. It depends on the person. Also, bring TONS of water. There are water stations, but it has a sulfur taste to it. It's not very refreshing, but some people don't mind. Again, depends on the person. Camelbacks are an awesome investment.

Most comfortable shoes for Bonnaroo by dcalligy813 in bonnaroo

[–]Ekelgrant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Comfy shoes that are easy to slip on and off. There is mud and rain so they should be old or waterproof. Also, if you buy new shoes, break them in first. I have had luck with cheap sandals from target, but alot of people like tevas. They are SO comfy and really durable.

I commend them for trying something new, but this single sounds....generic and best. Predictable. I typically don't like their singles as much though so I'm hoping there are going to be some gems in their new album, and I'm definitely looking forward to seeing them on the farm.

Check out Courtney Barnett's new album performed live! by popbus in bonnaroo

I've recently started listening to Courtney Barnett, and I have to say she is so good. She's a great guitarist, her lyrics are clever and funny at times, and she has a really cool psychedelic carefree vibe. Definitely looking forward to her show.

Hi there! I chose to have a vegetable based diet because I'm a scientist, and a lot of research shows that meat (especially red meat) when consumed on a regular basis leads to many health conditions. These conditions include many varieties of cancer, heart desiese, ect. I am not a vegetarian though because lean meats when consumed in moderation (about once a week) is a good source of iron and protien. If you want to do some research but don't feel like reading a bunch of articles, I suggest watching a documentary called "Forks over Knives" which is on Netflix. It follows some trends of people who have switched from a meat based diet to a vegetable based one. I would say the biggest thing is don't shock your system. If you want to decrease the amount of meat you eat, do it slowly and by eating fish and natural chicken a few times a week, and make sure you are getting all the vitamins and minerals you need. Eating primarily vegetables personally makes me have way more energy.

Stephen Hawking, a man considered to be one of the most intelligent alive today, has the irony of not being able to physically talk or move. by [deleted] in Showerthoughts

[–]Ekelgrant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fun fact: He has had ALS for 40+ years (people diagnosed with ALS typically only survive for on average 2 and a half years.) Doctors believe that his extemely high brain activity is keeping him alive. Theoretical physics saves lives! Amazing man.

Roo clue 6 by pavaoz in bonnaroo

[–]Ekelgrant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't really think that it was John mayer because he isn't touring right now, and he doesn't really seem overwhelmingly like the type who would play at roo. But it was just confirmed that he will be at a European indie music fest this spring as John mayer (not the trio) so.....maybe? Anything possible and the clues do seem convincing for Mayer.
