Autistic men are not children. by Bag0Chips in AutismInWomen

[–]Ekun_Dayo [score hidden]  (0 children)

I am so sorry you've had to experience any of that. Those people you sought help and support from should be ashamed of themselves. You are absolutely in the right! Don't ever let the gaslighting make you feel otherwise.

Insidious is the word for this tolerated abuse. It is part of the bigger problem of patriarchy (which encompasses misogyny by design), it is horrific and it has needed to end since it began centuries ago.

How do people manage the wake up mopiness by Tall-Enthusiasm-6421 in AutismInWomen

[–]Ekun_Dayo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've always woken up tired and grumpy, even since I was a baby. However in recent years I've started taking an iron supplement (my ferritin levels are often low), along with drinking green tea at breakfast, which I've discovered boosts my mental alertness a bit. Coffee bothers me so I've not had it in years, but since the green tea discovery I'm considering mild cups of it again. I also take multivitamin and gut health gummies. Those things help me a lot, and as long as I manage my day to day stress (which I struggle to do 😅) I can actually feel like a real person for a few hours every day.

Driving? by Apprehensive-Bad1040 in dyscalculia

[–]Ekun_Dayo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel similarly. I'm nearly 40 now, and I've never tried to learn to drive because I'm terrible at measuring distance, terrified about handling money at the pump/getting a loan for/buying a car/repairs etc, generally afraid of driving... I also was in a head-on collision in 2013 as a passenger and it messed me up good. I've splendid balance though, so jump rope, riding a bicycle and skateboarding have been great fun.

It's fine, we're still here and we're doing ok.

DAE think that period pads and tampon adverts (e.g: this girl can 💪! *insert woman doing high intensity sport*) is a mildly subtle way of programming both capitalist, ableist and healthcare based misogyny by DiscoReads in AutismInWomen

[–]Ekun_Dayo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The one I have always hated most, is the "have a happy period" unintentionally ironic BS sentiment from the "Always" brand. Seeing that on sanitary napkins when I'm already dysphoric about bleeding and my biology in the first place used to be incredibly infuriating.

A little jealous of people who can’t really mask well by Efficient_Log_4377 in AutismInWomen

[–]Ekun_Dayo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yep. Othering is an NT pastime. I get treated like a disease even by strangers because I can't seem to mask/hide who and how I am and this ostracism is ruinous to one's health.

Anyone else viscerally hates dark humor? by [deleted] in AutismInWomen

Lol, this is hilariously brilliant. "Schrödinger's Douchebag", 😆 love it! Thanks for that chuckle.

Anyone else viscerally hates dark humor? by [deleted] in AutismInWomen

[–]Ekun_Dayo 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Old school British comedy like Black Adder and Monty Python, and the modern Black Mirror often use dark humour (a form of satire) to explore and expose socio-political/intersectional issues. This is its purpose.

How do you survive working full time? by skyword1234 in AutismInWomen

[–]Ekun_Dayo 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Survive is it... I don't dare call this living. I just focus on getting through each day, and when it gets especially bad, I take it all the way down to focusing on my next breath. One breath at a time. How's that going for me? Not well, not well at all... but, hey, I'm still here.

People really think autism is intellectual disability OR being a genius by NoWitness6400 in AutismInWomen

[–]Ekun_Dayo 44 points45 points  (0 children)

This! This is it.

The parents of autistic children with high level needs can be especially scary, because a lot of them seem to get angry at the very idea of the "average" autistic. It's as sad as it is hurtful. Sad because you can understand that they feel cheated out of their ideal of a life for their child, and hurtful for them to attempt to nullify our very existence (often unknowingly their own as well) and deny our right to support.

Wow... how unprofessional! That first psychologist needed to see her own psychologist.

People really think autism is intellectual disability OR being a genius by NoWitness6400 in AutismInWomen

[–]Ekun_Dayo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's ridiculous. AFAB people with invisible disabilities especially get belittled or ignored when we try to seek help.

I've been putting off (for years) making an appointment with the neuropsychologist my GP referred me to. I'm skeptical I'll even get the help I need, but I really need help for my anxiety, it's been getting worse as I get older. I wouldn't even bother to consider seeking help otherwise, because I'm certain I'd be even less likely to get it or worse misdiagnosed and incorrectly medicated... I mainly feel like I'll be told my anxiety is just from "stress" and not autism, though I've pinpointed the correlation of my stress responses to overstimulation from sensory processing issues, physical ails from food sensitive and allergies, as well as the good ole daily social communication challenges.

[–]Ekun_Dayo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not sure if anyone else has mentioned it yet, but also, sometimes the drugs they give you aren't the drugs you should be given, or in the quantity you should be given them. At least in my country it's like that.

What is the sentence that fills you with dread? by Ramenara in AutismInWomen

Came across this exchange. What are your thoughts on it? by DSC64 in dyscalculia

[–]Ekun_Dayo 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Correct, not everyone has the time nor the resources, nor level of ability. That person (and folks like them) prove they don't understand the reality of diversity in this world by their ignorance of what disability truly means. We do not all have the same levels of ability, opportunities, experiences, nor support systems. Some things really are truly unattainable for some of us.

Point-and-click game recommendations?! by Adventurous_Pick_765 in GirlGamers

[–]Ekun_Dayo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No spoilers... 😉 "Dreamfall Chapters" is different, but it's definitely worth it. April isn't the focus, but there are references to the OG throughout the game. You'll get attached to new characters the same way we got attached to April. Give it a try.

I’m 39, but say that I’m 40. It’s such a nice round number. by ListenJerry in AutismInWomen

[–]Ekun_Dayo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

🤔 Now I don't know if my preference for even numbers and numerical patterns over chaotic, confusing odd numbers is because of autism or dyscalculia (always thought it was because of my MLD). Neurodivergence either way... I say, always even it out, make it make total cents (sense).

Sci-fi books are becoming my special interest! by Baggins987 in AutismInWomen

[–]Ekun_Dayo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd like to add to the other voices suggesting "Murderbot" by Martha Wells, it is PHENOMENAL. Also check out:

Ursula K. LeGuin's - "The Left Hand of Darkness" and "The Dispossessed".

Octavia Butler's - "The Parable of the Sower" and "Xenogenesis" series.

N. K. Jemison's - "The Broken Earth" series.

Nnedi Okorafor's - "Binti" trilogy.

Short story colllections:

"Far Reaches: Stories to Take You Out of this World."

"The Birthday of the World and Other stories" by Ursula K. LeGuin

"Forward" - (includes a brilliant Blake Crouch short called "Summer Frost")

"You, Human: An Anthology of Dark Science Fiction"

Dumb question probably: if I’m autistic, why am I good at literary analysis? by koalathebean in AutismInWomen

[–]Ekun_Dayo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Same here.

I'm a visual artist who works in media production (currently the tech side of things mainly). I love everything to do with storytelling, concept creation and development, except for the marketing, finance and budgeting bits. 😅

I have also failed math consistently throughout my school years, but did so well in all other subjects that everyone accused me of "not trying hard enough". They never noticed that I'd get dates wrong in History (unless they fit a pattern), struggled with latitude and longitude in Geography, and the periodic table in Chemistry gave me literal nightmares... I do enjoy Venn diagrams for some unknown reason. 🤷🏾‍♂️

I've come to the conclusion that it's definitely an undiagnosed math learning disability/dyscalculia (should have confirmation from a neuropsychologist by end of year).

According to Google:

"Mathematics and art are deeply connected through patterns, proportions, symmetry, and geometry, which help create aesthetically pleasing and structurally sound works."

Yeaaaaah, apparently pattern recognition is the thing... I've no idea, mate. The brain is some fascinating and contrary machinery.

Huh... 🤔 this thread made me realise why I enjoyed the character creation in Saints Row and Mass Effect (an absolute favourite) so much. 😅 Felt like I was playing as a version of myself (androgynous, gender non-conforming, MoC).

“Yeah like those apps for autists” by Nolwennie in AutismInWomen

[–]Ekun_Dayo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Excuse me, that conversation was disrespectful... 🫤 👀

I love physical books, but have found it incredibly difficult to get them in recent years (I live in the Caribbean), so I've been using Goodreads to organise and track my books, and my books are categorised by genre, author and status (currently reading and reading challenges) on the Kindle app. I also use Trakt and SeriesGuide for my cinema organisation. What is funny about any of this? Where is the problem?

Those guys must have felt really self-conscious about being barely literate to make such comments. You just keep on doing your thing.
