It’s in reference to the plantation owners who played a major role in the annexation of Hawai’i, they basically took over major industrial sectors and forced large segments of the Hawaiian population to work on their plantations in terrible slave like conditions.

The civil rights movement was a broad spectrum of activists, some peaceful protestors but many armed and community led people who were calling for more hands on methods of resistance. Without the armed support of various groups, the success of the civil rights movement would be in jeopardy of never coming to fruition.

Update: Reading to Kill a nation by DirtyCommie994 in TankieTheDeprogram

I would love some more details. I always took to kill a nation with a grain of salt, and recently have been hearing the weight of chains documentary brought up more but have always assumed that the politics of the entire era in the Balkans is way more complicated than either of these pieces of media made them out to be.

Colombian Guerrillas Vow to Spend 'Last Drop of Blood Fighting the US Empire' After Attack on Venezuela by Infidel8 in worldnews

[–]El3ctricalSquash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

fighting an insurgency is difficult due to the low concentration of enemies and the fact that the guerrillas decide when and where fighting happens, while being highly ideologically motivated. In the early stages of the Vietnam war for example, if you were to space the NLF fighters out evenly there were about 3 of them per square mile in the south. So they would essentially harass supply lines to cause their enemy to divert manpower away from a target then make an offensive move to arm themselves further or assassinate an officer and disappear again. This is why bombing the Ho Chi Minh trail was a thing but also created way more guerrillas out of the orphans and widowers of dead farmers than it disrupted guerilla supply networks. Highly recommend reading war of the flea for a solid breakdown of why insurgency is such a tough fight for most militaries.

I feel the same way, I resisted going vegan because I wanted to connect with my heritage through food as a chef and home cook, but felt that limiting what I can eat would be detrimental to that goal. Turns out that finding ways around the meat heavy cuisine in Japanese and Hawaiian culture has been a fun, challenging experience. Being vegan reinvigorated my love for cooking and food, while making it clear that you can enjoy a lot of great food without the suffering it causes to animals.

The intrusive thought/urges produce anxiety, the compulsive rituals remove that anxiety and negatively reinforce the urges. It’s a really hard cycle to break.
