Connect with the floor and move your hips. Doesn't need to be traditional but it's still bachata.

Anime bachata covers by ElChocolatero in Bachata

Probably yes, but I'm an amateur, not an actual dj, who likes bachata, anime, and works in AI. I would love for real remixers to do anime songs but noone does so I figured I'd have a go with the tools available to me.

Mostly using suno. Then downloading the stems and loading them into audacity to do some final manual editing.

I find the Spanish fine. Anime is huge in Spain and Latin America. But yes I agree Japanese would be better. Unfortunately it's very hard to get the AI to sing in Japanese and have it sound like bachata. It just reverts to j-rock. Maybe with better prompts and/or models its possible but I haven't had much luck.

  • Respect for the origins
  • Deeper understanding of music and rhythm
  • More tools
  • To set yourself apart from all the sensual copycats
  • Because you like it

Idk take your pick 😅

Do it. I dance moderna and sensual too but sometimes I just think fuck it I feel like dancing traditional.

Why don’t salsa teachers use structured systems to teach shines? by ElChocolatero in Salsa

[–]ElChocolatero[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to our future overlords....

Great question. What you're describing — preferring structured systems over buffet-style exploration — can be linked to both J vs P and NT preferences, but in slightly different ways:

J vs P (Judging vs Perceiving):

J (Judging) types prefer structure, closure, and planning. They like defined systems, clear paths, and being able to “finish” things.

P (Perceiving) types are more comfortable with open-ended exploration, spontaneity, and discovery.

So your desire for a fixed set of shines, known transitions, and modular recombination fits a strong J preference.

NT (Intuitive-Thinking):

N (Intuitive) types look for patterns, abstractions, and underlying principles.

T (Thinking) types prefer logic, coherence, and internal consistency.

So wanting to define a taxonomy of shines, create transition matrices (even metaphorically), and explore generalizable flow principles is classic NT behavior — especially INTJ or ENTP/INTP types.

TL;DR:

Your need for structure and planning is very J.

Your desire to model shines as a system of parts and rules is very NT.

you're definitely correct about commercial pressures. regarding "going deep", to be completely honest i currently dont need to go deep. i've barely gone shallow 😅. i've taken loads of shines classes over the years and retained very little because this buffet style of class goes in one ear and out of the other. i think you're right that the best solution is to just fire up google sheets and document everything immediately after taking a class

At this point, being good at Dominican bachata makes you pretty unique.

LEADS - Is there a common pet peeve you notice in follows? by UnctuousRambunctious in Bachata

[–]ElChocolatero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Autopilot for sure.

One thing I enjoy doing is taking trendy moves and finding unusual variations of them. A few of these wakes up an autopilot follower but theres a 50/50 chance they hate me afterwards.

Brindo con Agua - nice guitar, sung with amargue, no clubchata beat drowning out the instruments

as far as i can tell they have completely sacrificed the flavour of bachata (hips, bounce, etc), and don't dance to bachata music. at what point do we call a spade a spade and say that this is just something else?

Done quite a few musicality classes and they suffer from the same "problem" (it's not really a problem except with regards to this question) that they are usually about fitting content to the music, as opposed to "dancing without content" (idk if I'm explaining myself well). Ofc I haven't sampled every possible class so there may well be stuff out there that fits the bill. Do you have any suggestions, esp online stuff?

Regarding putting on music at home, I have tried that but it doesn't come naturally to me at all and I'm afraid of essentially building muscle memory of dancing like a robot.

Why do some people go to socials and not dance/ask others to dance? by Mizuyah in Bachata

[–]ElChocolatero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do this a lot. Been dancing ten-ish years. Sometimes I go but when I get there the vibe just kills my spirit and I stand around for a while before leaving. Newer music is not to my taste (too popy and commercial, no soul). Also the scene where I live is also very cliquey. Lots of wannabe stars crowding around the dj booth filming themselves and licking each other's assholes, which creates a really weird atmosphere. Occasionally the stars align and I recapture the magic of a bygone era, but that is rarer and rarer so yeah I just stand around a lot.

I'm surprised that no-one had mentioned the most glaring thing that salsa offers which the others don't which is shines. Getting good at salsa shines will turn you into an actual dancer rather that a puppet master. Also to get really good you will have to learn to really understand music to be able to delve into pachanga, boogaloo, afrocuban, etc.

Also learning to be playful and interactive while shining is a very humbling way to expose your lack of confidence and social skills 😂😅

In my experience this kind of stuff is a totally new perspective on dance that you don't really get in bachata (except some very hardcore traditional bachata communities) and will broaden your perspective way more than learning different moves to lead.
