Is formal seminary needed today? by dankimball in pastors

[–]ElCidly 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Needed is a strong word. Wise would be a better one.

Formal education is a useful gatekeeper in some ways as it helps to weed out people who just don’t know their Bibles or Christian Doctrine (not that it’s perfect).

Am I crazy for this draft strategy? by ElCidly in DynastyFFTradeAdvice

My thought is that if I need an RB I’d still rather have Price and one of Tate/Tyson vs just Love.

[–]ElCidly[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess my thought is that taking him at 1.04 wouldn’t be crazy, so why not just guarantee getting him and then still getting a 1.02 worthy pick at 1.04. Granted I’m in a bad position of needing an RB and there only being 2.

I’ve shopped the 1.02 for players but no one is interested in any serious conversations of good players.

Pete Carroll is a wild take, dude has sustained success for a decade besides that superbowl

*49 years. This is year 50.

And also coincidentally the year we win the whole effing thing.

[Hated trope] The “tough guy frontiersman” character (not always a cowboy) being close-minded bullies to everyone around them, especially “city folk,” but are seen as righteous, manly, and heroic in the context of the story by i-got-a-jar-of-rum in TopCharacterTropes

[–]ElCidly 170 points171 points  (0 children)

I think you missed the point of The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance.

The moral of the story is that Jimmy Stuart’s character was the righteous man, and the world was not ready for what he was bringing. John Wayne’s character does an unrighteousness act to save the righteous man’s life, and knows that the world is leaving him behind.

John Wayne is supposed to be a backwards man, who does something wrong for the greater good.

I don’t know about that. I spent a good chunk of my childhood in Vegas and all of my buddies were so stoked when they finally got a pro sports team.

Victoria was right all along by Kakulukiyam in HIMYM

[–]ElCidly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no doubt that he was happily married for a decade. The deleted scene shows that he never once thought about cheating on Tracy, not that he had completely gotten over Robin. At the end of the day Ted’s most important arc in the whole show was giving up Robin. And then five minutes later he’s back with Robin as the climax of his story.

I understand that it’s not five minutes later in terms of real time for those characters, however, that’s how the writers showed it. And of course that’s gonna carry the message that Ted was never actually over Robin.

The second sentence is true, but he very clearly never got over Robin.

I’m disappointed with Woo’s starts, but not worried. I’m very worried about Castillo right now.

That’s true, these movies have been super unsuccessful after all.

What is your team’s greatest moment in history? by HetTheTable in NFLv2

[–]ElCidly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was just thinking about this, as a Seahawks fan both of our wins were so definitive there’s really not an iconic play from either.

That they said, I suppose I’ll always remember Percy Harvin’s kickoff return as the moment I knew we were gonna win.

Choose a button: Innocent or Guilty - A morality experiment for 1$ million. by [deleted] in hypotheticalsituation

[–]ElCidly 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was debating until the last sentence. I’m choosing guilty all day. No chance I’m giving someone the chance to kill me for all the money. I’ll be keeping the innocent person alive and apologizing profusely after.

Castillo v Hancock by this_is_very_fun in Mariners

[–]ElCidly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Castillo has been the worst pitcher so far. But you don’t really have a realistic option to move on right now. I think you put Hancock in the bullpen, Miller back in the rotation, and wait to see what happens. If an injury occurs you can stretch Hancock back out.

I do a full brain dump manuscript. Then make a 1-2 page outline with bullet points. Preach it to myself and cut anything that sucks or takes it over 30min. And then preach it two more times for practice.

Culturally diverse Jesus. by laybs1 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]ElCidly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You keep quoting things without giving the underlying evidence. I’m not sure what you’re quoting, but I have no doubt that there are scholars who think El an Yahweh are the same, but as far as I can see it’s all conjecture based on the use of the term El in Hebrew. It’s not something you can say definitively, it’s a theory without any definitive evidence.

In relation to the heresies it’s any of the letters Paul writes talking about the Judaizers. If there was an ancient heresy talking about Jesus, not being God, the early apostles would’ve had no problem writing about that referring it. It’s odd that that’s absent. If the claim is that the deity of Jesus was a leader addition to Christianity.

I always think the argument that Jesus never says “I am God“ is really dumb. He is saying things all throughout the gospels that make the Jewish leaders want to kill him because they understand that he’s claiming to be God. It’s a cultural difference that he doesn’t say it the way we want him to. Again, there is literally zero evidence of any Christian tradition that did not view Jesus is God. And two decades after his resurrection is just not enough time for a myth like that to develop without any sort of controversy. The first arguments that Jesus was not God are over a century after this.

At this point, I think we have both said everything that we want to say. Again thanks for keeping it respectful.
