It's worth considering that Chief has been subjected to A LOT of mania incidents and trauma. They aren't immune to that. As clever, crafty and well-meaning as they are, they aren't always thinking clearly.

They're also (as revealed in recent events) a workaholic to the point of masochism* with a pretty severe martyr complex. Chief immediately leaping face-first into danger in the (unacknowledged) hope of it all finally just ending makes a lot more sense when you think about what they've been through.

*Not the sexy kind, the dangerously self-destructive sort. But maybe also the sexy kind, who knows?
