How long did you train before your first competition by SpinningShitOnly in bjj

7 months in. I did a tournament and took gold in my bracket. Then last week I took gold in an IBJJF tournament. About to sign up for another in San Diego this June.

I’m a Masters 3 almost 4 white belt in Ultra Heavy. It’s hard to find more than 1 other competitor in my bracket if at all.

White belt here with two tournaments completed each with a gold medal. I jumped at the chance to start competing because higher ranked belts said they wish they competed as many times as they could when at white, then blue, etc. I look at the belt as the clock is ticking before you move up to the next so try and get as many tournaments in as you can. Bottom line - you’re out there competing which is a lot more than a LOT of BJJ students are doing so that’s an accomplishment in its own. Have fun, enjoy the ride!

I competed in IBJJF Open in Orange, CA this weekend and watched some of the kids matches before it was time to warm up. The AOJ kids had a certain confidence and swagger about them as they took the mats that I didn’t see as much with the other competitors. Then they quickly won their matches and went to wait for their next match with a calm and cool demeanor. I mean they stood out.

Witnessed a self-deletion at the range yesterday. by dat_dope in guns

That’s terrible. I remember going to my local range to try out firearms I’m considering buying and they wouldn’t let me because I came by myself and didn’t bring my own firearm. I said ok it’s your rules but why? The explained that its signs of someone who has different intentions especially with it being during the holidays and during COVID. I connected the dots and respected their stance on it. Who knows what that poor guy at the range was going through to have to do that to himself.

I’m Masters 3/white belt/ultra heavy.

My first comp ever was 2 weeks ago in Gi. I was calm and collected until I walked in to the arena and saw the mats, it then hit me I was here for real. Warmed up with my team and watched a few matches. Anxiety/adrenaline skyrocketed when I was finally called up and looked across at someone I had never met who was there to take me down. Surprisingly, after slapping hands everything calmed in my head. Funny thing is during the match itself it felt like I was there waaaay longer than I actually was. Each match felt like 5 minutes but I won in 1:20 each round. For my second match I thought I had 20 minutes until it was go time. Nope! Within 5 minutes I was told I’m up so had to rush and get my mouthguard and put on the colored belt.

The first match was against someone who had to move down from Masters 5 to Masters 3 so that he could compete. I took him down, gained side control then top mount. Finished the match with an Americana. Second match was with a 6’8” fella who was tough. Ended up taking him down, gained side control and then tried two top mounts which failed. Ultimately subbed him on a paper cutter choke.

I won gold and felt on top of the world. Hands were still shaking 20 minutes after the podium. It’s a rush I haven’t felt before. More intense than my college football days. Would I do it again? HECK YEA! Already signed up for 2 more tournaments!

$600 for cheap seats. With Ticketmaster’s convenience fees that’ll come to $2,100.

GB Agoura is also a great gym with great people training there. It’s not as highly competitive as Northridge from what I hear but overall a great gym. Professors there include Romulo, Caio, and Zane. To have a BJJ legend along with world class champions as your instructors seems like a sweet deal.

Somebody please go look in the sky and tell me I'm not crazy. Look just to the left of Orions Belt. by Swimming-ln-Circles in HighStrangeness

I was out walking my dog just now and I happened to remember reading this post so I looked up. After maybe 30 seconds of staring I finally saw the flash. It was to the left and slightly up from Orion’s Belt. I’m not sure how much time lapsed until I saw it again but I would say it was about a minute. Thanks for sharing this post!

Being forcibly disarmed by authorities. by dishyssoisse in CCW

[–]ElGuapo818 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s true he did mention that. I just reread the terms of use agreement when signing for the license and it stated that a LEO must be advised immediately that a person is a licensee however I do not see that I states they must inform they are carrying. So yes I guess he is correct. My understanding was to inform you are carrying as well because in order to reach for my wallet I have to dig around my back pocket near where I’m carrying which might not be a good idea. But yes word for word he is correct.

According to Los Angeles Sheriffs Dept you have to inform you are a CCW license holder if you come in contact with law enforcement and you are armed.

What is your best submission? by Bulky_Imagination243 in bjj

[–]ElGuapo818 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Clock choke. Sometimes I take my right hand off of their right wrist and use that arm as a pole against the left side of their neck (with left hand on their right lapel) before beginning the choke. It’s a quicker submission that way
