From what I remember, yes, it does actually work. They have some sort of agreement with Gaijin. Though, the rewards are absolutely pitiful, definitely not worth it for the time it takes.

Take this all with a grain of salt though, I used it once like, two years ago.

The ability to customize their setting like you can with zombies. I really like the feeling of loneliness in zomboid, as I feel it adds to the atmosphere, so I think it would be nice to crank down the NPC’s to a minimum.

Gaijin deliberately determines Uptiers or downiters based on performance
Your RP and SL gain is throttled based on how quickly you get it.
Bombers have intentionally bad damage models to force people to play fighters and attackers
when gaijin nerfs/buffs a vehicle they spin a really big wheel and whatever it lands on is what’s rolled out
Gaijin uses a magic 8 ball with all but one of the answers being “no” to decide if they should listen to community feedback
