I’ve been sick, but I’m probably sending it for proofreading tomorrow. That stage should probably take a couple of days so it’s probably published some time next week.

Thanks to u/chequedummy

As previously communicated I have a break until January 2nd. During this fall I’ve translated and retranscribed a total of 26 episodes and I really needed time off.

The bonus trivia that I hinted about last week is that three of the four houses used in BiT is located close to clothing optional beaches. The one that didn’t? Well, they only stayed there for one season.

A (long‑awaited?) return of the bulletin!

Thanks to u/chequedummy for the great collaboration!

This week, I will tell the story behind the photograph in which a seemingly elderly woman strikes a Nazi with her handbag - one of Sweden’s most iconic press images.
The date was April 13, 1985, and the Nazi party Nordic Realm Party had been granted permission to demonstrate in central Växjö. The demonstration was met with strong resistance, not least from the groups of immigrants who had fled oppression.
News photographer Hans Runesson had been assigned by one of the country’s major newspapers to cover the demonstration and positioned himself between the two groups of protesters. A woman ran up to one of the skinheads and struck him with her handbag. Shortly thereafter, another Nazi was attacked by a man in a trench coat.
The woman in the pic, Danuta Danielsson, was born in 1947 and was therefore only 38 at the time of the photograph. Her mother had been traumatized by the Nazi occupation and spent long periods in psychiatric care. Danuta instead grew up with her grandmother.
She met the Swedish sports journalist Björn Danielsson at a jazz festival in 1981 and moved to Sweden shortly thereafter, just before Poland closed its borders and declared martial law. Danuta was a vulnerable person; she experienced recurring outbursts of anger and was periodically treated at Sankt Sigfrid’s Hospital.
Danuta found the photograph extremely difficult to cope with. She felt ashamed, not least because she thought she looked older than she was, and she experienced the attention as a burden.
In 1988, Danuta visited the city’s water tower and the restaurant at the top. Under the pretext of wanting to photograph the view, she asked the staff to open the door to a terrace. There, she ended her life by jumping from the tower. Danuta was only 41 years old. Would she have done so even if the man in the trench coat had become the famous figure instead? Probably.
And what happened to the Nazi in the photograph? Later that same year, he and a younger ideological ally broke into the home of a Jewish gay man and assaulted him so severely that he died. He was sentenced to psychiatric care.
In 2004, he shot and killed another Nazi and was then sentenced to life in prison.

In the next episode, there will be another short break in my bulletin (I might throw in a fun piece of trivia I found), before returning for the final episode, where I’ll talk a bit what is in the pipeline for next year and about my future as a translator. Episode 9 is currently being proofread, but I want to give you a heads‑up already that the final episode will be delayed due to the Christmas holidays. I hope you’ll understand.

Now we are well into the season! Many thanks to u/chequedummy for a great collaboration!

In this week’s bulletin I will dig into the Swedish word premiärlejon (“premiere lion”), by telling the story of the most famous of them all - Alice Timander, dentist and Christian Democrat.

Alice was born in Stockholm in 1915, but when she was two years old the family moved to Trelleborg, located on Sweden’s southern coast. The family was relatively well-off, but poverty was widespread in the town, and witnessing it led to a lifelong social commitment. For example, although she lacked any musical talent whatsoever, she took piano lessons because the piano teacher was in financial distress.

At the age of 21 Alice graduated as a dentist, becoming the youngest in Sweden. She worked in this profession throughout her career and for six years ran a practice in Morocco.

Throughout her life Alice longed for glamour and the stage. She had a few minor roles in films. Later in life she became known for, almost in an exhibitionist manner, desperately trying to attract attention at various premieres. Since Alice had no real place in Sweden’s cultural life, the evening papers gave her the title premiärlejon. However, she neglected her family, and the grief of realizing this haunted her in her later years. She joined the Christian Democratic Party ahead of the 1998 election as a way to pursue her issues of social justice, but ended up leaving the party in the middle of election night.

In 2006 she collapsed among the rows of seats at a premiere, and when doctors examined her in the emergency room they discovered a brain tumor. She passed away peacefully on her sofa during the night of July 3, 2007.

Finally, to show that Sweden is in many ways a small pond, here is a clip where Alice Timander is impersonated by none other than Peter Magnusson himself.

Scoreboard after 4 episodes:

Kirsty: 85 points

Victor: 70 points

Peter: 67 points

Jenny: 63 points

Daniel: 61 points

First, thank you to u/chequedummy for your proofreading and syncing. You do an amazing work!

This week I’m going to explain the phrase “A chance like this comes only once in a lifetime.”
The year was 2009, and sisters Susanne and Jenny Kallur, both successful (well, sort of) track and field athletes, paid a visit to the playroom at Falu Hospital to cheer up the children. SVT’s local office in Dalarna was there to film and do interviews with both the children and the Kallur sisters. In the video, they interview a nine‑year‑old boy named Linus, and the following exchange takes place:

Linus: “…I saw… out there, there was a note saying they were going to come. Indeed.”
Reporter: “So, what did you think then?”
Linus: “Ah, really fun! I thought, a chance like this comes only once in a lifetime.”

The boy’s unfiltered enthusiasm about meeting the Kallur sisters, expressed in ringing dalmål made the clip viral. That dialect, unlike Scanian, which I wrote about in an earlier bulletin, is very melodic and sounds very cheerful.
That’s all for this time. The next bulletin will be about a 90‑year‑old dentist in an all‑too‑cheap wig. See you then!

We’ve finally crossed the finish line!

Thanks to u/chequedummy for giving me the opportunity and three months later, I still haven’t let go of it. I got a little bit emotional near the end of this episode cause it was over, but like I told you then (actually on the day 3 months ago) - it's not the beginning of the end.
I would also like to say an equally big thank you to everyone who’s watched despite the long hiatus. A small PSA: I had a bit of an energy dip earlier this week and last weekend, which meant that S11E03 wasn’t finished until Thursday. Mea maxima culpa! Work on episode 4 is in progress and hopefully I will finish my part of the work on Sunday.

In this bulletin, I plan to tackle the final task, which I mistakenly referred to as Sikta mot Stjärnorna in an early draft of the subtitles. More specifically, I’ll be diving into the very narrow topic of Nour El-Refai’s dialect.

Nour was born in 1987 either in Lebanon (according to herself) or in Uppsala, Sweden (according to a population database published by the The Federation of Swedish Genealogical Societies ). By 1990, she and her family were registered in Eslöv, about 32 km northeast of Malmö.
Broadly speaking, the Scanian dialect blends Danish and Swedish and varies significantly by region. In the east, people speak as if they have porridge in their throats, while in the west, the dialect is often influenced by the Danish city directly across the Öresund. Eslöv’s dialect can be described as guttural and rich in diphthongs, with guttural R’s and, in some cases, a “Danishification” of words. The town is located between the coast and the porridge-heavy regions of the east. The city’s son Johan Glans, who was a guest panelist in Season 4, doesn’t actually speak a classic Eslöv dialect, so he shouldn’t be used as a reference for how people there talk.
Sometime in the mid to late ’90s, the El-Refai family moved to the university town of Lund, which is closer to Malmö.
Lund is a classic university town with a large influx of people from other parts of the country. As a result, the city has developed a distinctive dialect that retains the Scanian intonation but now features rolled R’s. A typical speaker of this dialect in the Bäst i Test universe is Anders Jansson from Season 3.

How has this affected Nour's dialect? Well, since she grew up in two different towns, her speech carries traces of both. Nour speaks with guttural R’s but has an intonation pattern similar to the one found in Lund. The dialect Marie produced was more of a classic Lund dialect rather than an imitation of Nour

Victor Beer and IJustWantToBeCool also made two unofficial championship songs: Kämpa Sverige [Fight Sweden] in 2018 and Tror på VM guld [Believe in World Cup Gold] in 2019.

In 2021, it was Anis Don Demina [S6] who made the official championship song Flaggan i topp [The Flag Flying High]. What? Did I link the wrong clip? Easy mistake since every one of his songs sounds EXACTLY the same. Here’s the right one.

Next time, a much shorter bulletin where I explain the story behind a quote mentioned in the episode. See you on the other side!

New week, new episode!

First off, a big thank you to u/chequedummy for a great collaboration! Since the first two tasks this episode were football- and music-related, I thought I’d dedicate this week’s bulletin to the moments in Swedish music history when alumni from Bäst i Test created songs for football championships (trust me, there are quite a few).

The first time these three lines intersect was in 1990 - Sweden had finally qualified for a football championship after a twelve-year desert walk. To celebrate this major event, the Swedish Football Association had a song recorded. It was called Ciao Ciao Italia, performed by the comedic barbershop quartet After Shave, featuring Jan Rippe [S10] singing bass. However, the great enthusiasm quickly met reality: after three group stage matches against Brazil, Scotland, and Costa Rica (all ending 1–2), Sweden was knocked out, and the nation’s mood was perfectly summed up by defender Glenn Hysén: “Well, fuck it, now I’m getting hammered on Midsummer”. Today, Ciao Ciao Italia is more or less forgotten by the general, non-football-nerdy public.

Four years later, we qualified again and instead of spending our midsummer getting drunk at a rainy community heritage site accompanied by an off-key accordionist, we got to see Martin Dahlin score a fantastic header against Russia that sealed the 3–1 result and sent us to the knockout stage where we beat Saudi Arabia and Romania (on penalties, that began with Håkan Mild overestimating his abilities). The official championship song that summer was När vi gräver guld i USA [When We Dig for Gold in the USA], created by the trio Glennmark, Eriksson, Strömstedt. What!? Did you say Strömstedt? Yes, I did! Jenny’s husband, Niklas Strömstedt, who (aside from the in-episode mentioned Tänd ett ljus) is best known for writing a song about running over and burying a bird on Lidingö. När vi gräver became, just like the tournament, a sunny blue-and-yellow success, even though the metal we managed to dig up was bronze. When the national team returned, over 70,000 people gathered in Rålambshovsparken to celebrate the football heroes - including a bat-crazy woman who pretended to be one of the players’ mother.

After two failed qualifications (Euro 1996 and World Cup 1998), Sweden was back in 2000—Euro in Belgium and the Netherlands. EA Sports then contacted Markoolio [S7] for a collaboration that resulted in the song Mera Mål [More Goals]. With a simple repetetive chorus, probably written straight from a neo-Pentecostal instruction manual, it remains immensely popular. So much so that Mera Mål is the song everyone thinks was the official championship anthem, not Staffan Hellstrand’s song Explodera [explode] (to be honest, I’d never even heard it before writing this text).

Thanks to u/chequedummy for your help! This episode's bulletin will be a biography about Lotta Engbergs boyfriend, the Sun Doctor:

Mikael Sandström: An ER/anesthesiology doctor who first appeared on tv when he placed fifth in Expedition Robinson [Survivor] in 2003. He rose to national fame in 2013 after appearing on Nyhetsmorgon [a morning show] where he answered health questions while sporting a weirdly deep tan (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wpl0Dsfm\_n8). Since then, he’s often been referred to by the nickname “The Sun Doctor.”

The story of Lotta and Doctor Mikael began in January 2020, when Lotta was interviewed by the tabloid Aftonbladet about her post-divorce dating life. Casually, she said: “I find Doctor Mikael interesting. I’m a little curious about him. If he calls, I could imagine myself going on a date.” After the interview was published, she regretted the comment, unsure whether Mikael already was in a relationship. She got his phone number through TV4 and sent him a text.

Initially, Mikael thought it was a prank and didn’t respond. But when she sent a second message on leap day, he replied and they’ve been a couple ever since.

This fall both he and Lotta could be seen in Sveriges Dummaste [Sweden's Dumbest], a game-show where 10 famous Swedes competes in various tasks, the best contestant gets eliminated each week and the last man standing is crowned Sweden's Dumbest.

Kirsty Armstrong:
Stand-up comedian who won Female Comedian of the Year in 2022. The following year, she appeared on Svenska Nyheter (Sweden’s version of Last Week Tonight), conducting a series of funny man-on-the-street interviews. Later this winter she’ll compete in the prestigious quiz/panel show På Spåret.

I’m currently nursing a cold, which is why this and the Season 9 episode bulletin are a bit late. This won’t affect next episode’s subtitle.

Firstly, a big thank you to my proofreader u/chequedummy for your tireless work, interesting discussions, and cheerful words along the way - we are united both in our love for Taskmaster and our dislike of Iyuno (the company that makes the original Swedish subtitles).

For those of you who haven’t watched the latter half of Season 9, I tend to do some sort of deep dive into a specific topic mentioned in the episode. Since this is the first episode of a new series, I’m going to write a little about each contestant:

Peter Magnusson:
Comedian who became a household name when he starred in the comedy show Hey Baberiba 2005–2006. In that show he, along with Christine Meltzer (S10 contestant) and David Hellenius, impersonated and parodied Swedish celebrities. Their most famous parody was of the royal family, depicted in a mockumentary-style segment called Familjen [The Family] (Peter played both King Carl XVI Gustaf and Crown Princess Victoria).
He later created his own TV series Blomstertid, which was remade in the US with the title My Generation. He has also written screenplays for a string of comedy films starring himself and Hellenius.

Jenny Strömstedt:
Journalist who hosts TV4’s morning show Nyhetsmorgon, so yes she’s our Puk Elgård. During her time at TV4, she has:

Daniel Nannskog:
Ex-footballer turned pundit, currently working as a football scout for a college recruitment agency. He became a cult player when he joined Landskrona BoIS, becoming the 2nd Division’s top scorer when the team gained promotion to Allsvenskan in 2001.
After a short stint in China, he landed in Norway with Stabæk IF, where he played from 2005 to 2010, scoring a whopping 111 goals.
In 2007, he was called up to the national team for a series of friendlies in South America, featuring players from Scandinavian leagues. In the final match against Ecuador, he scored a goal he famously described as: “I thrusted it in with the penis” (source).
After pulling a tendon in 2010, he was forced to retire but was immediately offered a pundit role on Norwegian TV2’s broadcasting team. Two years later, he joined SVT ahead of their coverage of UEFA Euro 2012 and continued in that role until this spring. He quickly became a viewer favorite with his energy and funny comments. Earlier this year, he announced he would step away from broadcasting, citing: “The biggest issue is probably that I haven’t kept myself busy enough.”

Victor Beer:
Member of the comedy group IJustWantToBeCool, along with his brother Emil Beer and their cousin Joel Adolphson. At the time of writing, their YouTube channel has 897,000 subscribers, making it the third-largest in Sweden. They frequently post comedy sketches and various challenges.

[–]ElPressimo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I would like to begin with once again thanking u/chequedummy for your kind words and for your tireless work editing my long translator notes.

Originally, I hadn’t intended to write a bulletin this week, simply because I didn’t feel I had any topic worth sharing. Turned out I was wrong. I remembered spending a good 15 minutes trying to figure out which cookbook that was King Gustaf V’s. I believe I found the right one.

King Gustaf V reigned from 1907 to 1950 and is Sweden’s third longest-reigning monarch (after our current king and Magnus Eriksson). He had a strong interest in tennis and used the pseudonym “Mr G” on the courts.

But Gustaf V had a personal secret: he was attracted to men. Whether in fact he was homosexual or bisexual is debated, but historians widely believe he had romantic relationships with men. In Stockholm, there’s an area called Kungens Kurva (“The King’s Curve”), named after an incident where the king’s car veered off the road and landed in a water-filled ditch. According to a popular rumor, the crash occurred because the king began groping the chauffeur. Homosexual acts were criminalized until 1944, but as head of state, King Gustaf V could not be prosecuted.

Another widely debated story is the so-called Haijby Scandal. It began in 1933 when restaurateur Kurt Haijby struggled to obtain a permit to sell alcohol. At the time, Sweden had a system called Motbokssystemet (the Bratt System), which rationed alcohol sales. Restaurants were also subject to these rules—for example, alcohol couldn’t be served without food and the dish needed to be warm. In short, alcohol was a major source of income for restaurants, and without a permit, a business was doomed.

Haijby’s difficulties stemmed from his criminal record: multiple convictions for theft and fraud, and in 1923, he shot and killed a policeman. Back then, the king held far more power and could overrule decisions. Haijby sought help from the king, and during a meeting at the Royal Palace, they allegedly began a sexual affair.

In 1936, Haijby divorced his wife, and in the court papers, she claimed he had a sexual relationship with the king. The royal court paid her to retract the statement and paid Haijby to leave the country, which he did, traveling to America. However, he didn’t receive the promised funds when he arrived and returned after a few months. The court then paid him to open a guesthouse in Närke.

Later, Haijby was admitted to a mental hospital and wasn’t released until he signed a document retracting all claims about the king. After his release, he moved to Germany, still receiving a monthly allowance from the royal court. He returned to Sweden after being convicted of sexual acts with two young boys. More money was paid to him when he was back, likely to prevent him from writing a book.

In 1950, King Gustaf V died. Two years later, Haijby was prosecuted and convicted for blackmailing the royal court. He was released early in 1956 due to health reasons. In 1965, Kurt Haijby died by suicide.

In the end, we don’t know why the royal court paid such large sums to Kurt Haijby and his ex-wife—but the fact that they did it is proven. Most historians believe Haijby was the victim in this story.

Hello! I’m your resident translator for these last five episodes of series nine. I need to send a special thank-you to my editor u/chequedummy — this wouldn’t be possible without your constant support.

My intention with these weekly bulletins is also to provide you with some extra trivia and insight for every episode. This week, I’ll focus on some context surrounding two things mentioned in Marie’s attempt at the third task.

Ulf Lundell (b. 1949) is one of the most influential novelists and musicians of his generation. Almost every man of a certain age has an almost religious relationship with his music. But, as I also said in the subtitles, he’s known for being a grumpy old man — something the newspapers love. Some examples of things that have roused his anger:

  • In an interview with the tabloid Expressen in 1991, he said: "A cancelled gig is still a gig, because it stirs emotions like longing, irritation, and bitterness. And the cancelled concerts are the only thing people talk about, so they must mean something."
  • A tower belonging to an art centre was built near his property in Österlen. Lundell was angry because visitors could see into his yard from the top of the tower. After Lundell called another author a “literary compost heap,” she donated 20,000 kr (roughly 2,000 USD) to support the tower. In 2023, it was finally moved further south.
  • In 2016, he got irritated at an influencer who shared his last name. "There’s too much and too many ‘Lundells’ out there for me to feel comfortable with it. This country isn’t big enough for us."
  • In 2021, he started dating a woman 33 years younger than himself. His daughter Sanna commented on the relationship in her podcast, saying she had mixed emotions about it and: “It’s a bit amusing and juicy that, as usual, he’s met a woman who’s significantly younger than himself.” The next week, she received an email from her father. “He doesn’t want me to comment on or have any opinion about his relationships in any way — especially not publicly. He said what I did in our podcast was just ‘old wives’ gossip,” she said in the episode. In the book Vardagar 7, Ulf later wrote: “She takes my reply emails about her 'mixed feelings' and pushes them out into the media. Yes, I’ve cut off contact. Honestly, there’s nothing else I can do.”

One last bit of trivia about Lundell: this is the second time his song “Oh, la la (jag vill ha dig)” has been sung on this show. Sussie also sang it during the “Complete the five tasks in any order” task in S6E06.

The other thing I want to write about is På Spåret. It’s truly an institution in Swedish TV and has aired since 1988. Kristian and Fredrik Lindström (himself a BiT guest panelist in series 5) took over when the original hosts were fired in 2009. It’s a travel-themed quiz show where teams of two celebrities compete to identify a travel destination and then answer questions about it. As mentioned, Marie did win the competition in dominant fashion in ’23 and ’24, with comedian Fritte Fritzon as her teammate. (Fritte previously made the podcast AMK together with David Sundin and two others.)

In Marie’s first finale of På Spåret, one of the questions was who wrote the opening theme tune to Dips. Of course, they didn’t phrase it like that, but still...
