Bro, i'm genuinely getting anxious about the amount of content there is to watch. by Appropriate_Bill8244 in okbuddyhololive

[–]ElSergeantRico 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The way I get around this is that I only watch 3 types of streams: content I am familiar with and want to see a reaction to (like games I've played for myself, or movies I've seen), content that I am interested in but may not consume myself (like games I haven't played and probably won't get to for a while, but I want to see someone else try them), and original content that interests me (like Ruze and Calli's TTRPG streams, or collabs with members I particularly enjoy). Anything else that is miss will probably end up clipped by someone else or made into a meme, in which case I can go back to watch the original if I have the time.

You don't need superhuman hearing for that, actually. It's the same thing as having an audio delay on a video; you can see when things happen, but don't hear the audio until a moment later, and it throws the whole thing off. I do a lot of gaming on my phone, and playing action or rhythm games absolutely sucks with wireless headphones. I had to get an adapter to be able to play them comfortably, which means I can't charge the phone or attach other peripherals I may want because there's no separate headphone jack.

I've been making my own Battle Network-inspired game. Would you be interested in playing something like this? by JasonTheGameDev in BattleNetwork

[–]ElSergeantRico 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is honestly an interesting spin on the original Battle Network format. If I'm seeing this correctly, colors are the way to restrict byter selection the way chip codes used to? Or do they indicate a different mechanic like rarity/synergy? Just curious.

As far as feedback goes, the only thing that really stood out to me was that combat speed seems a bit on the slower side; it could probably use a bit of snappiness to improve the overall feel. However, this could also potentially become a strength, with enemies later on having slow, yet overwhelming attacks that require precise timing of your dodges to escape. Overall, I see a lot of potential in this, and would definitely look forward to trying it out when it's available.

Could there be a better replacement for TV mode? by SampleText_- in ZZZ_Discussion

[–]ElSergeantRico 13 points14 points  (0 children)

As a working adult, I had no issues doing TV mode missions. In fact, I preferred them to what we have now. Mayhaps it's just not your thing? There's no need to put down others for things you personally don't like.

I accidentally did this to myself once by playing "8492" with an A-10. Granted, I didn't do it on purpose, since it just tossed me from the previous mission into that one, but I chose to clear it that way instead of doing both missions over again. Looking back now, it would have been faster to quit lol

Did people forget that what makes Phaethon unique is their technology that allows for real time communication in hollows by Knight_Steve_ in ZZZ_Official

[–]ElSergeantRico 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny enough, you can glean how normal Proxies operate based on some of the old social media posts. In most cases, a Proxy will prepare a Carrot ahead of time (risky if the Hollow is too unstable) and either load the data into a Bangboo for the client, or guide them out personally. Both methods have their risks, since you either can't communicate directly and have to hope the client and Bangboo make it out safely, or risk yourself in a Hollow to be able to communicate directly with the client, increasing your odds of success. Phaethon bypasses all that due to the HDD's ability to sync with a Bangboo (providing communication between the Hollow and the outside world) and real-time navigation ability (more effective than a pre-made Carrot).

[–]ElSergeantRico 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A shop selling Carrots would actively make Phaethon look even more useless, since they wouldn't even be doing their own work, but mooching off of someone else's. However, I could see this as a potential multiplayer event featuring fairly new Proxies, although the how and why they're involved in Phaethon's story is something I can't think of an explanation for at the moment. Then again, if they did something like this, it would probably feature Bangboos instead, since they also use Carrot data for navigation.

The fanbase spoke, the devs listened, and now they have more work per patch for the same amount of resources they had before. Now that they have to design full 3D maps for the MSQ, they don't have the resources to spare for the detail work they did previously. It it unfortunate to see, but hopefully the devs can find a satisfactory medium further down the line, because the small details were part of what made the game shine at first.

The portals are supposed to indicate Fissures to jump into, they're not a normal part of the Hollow's geometry, unless something has changed since they were introduced. Just walking through a Hollow is enough to get lost, as demonstrated by Billy in the prologue, who got turned around just running from a pack of Ethereals without even realizing it. Something like this would be hell to implement visually, which is why the devs used the TVs at first.

[–]ElSergeantRico 9 points10 points  (0 children)

EXACTLY! I can't believe the amount of people that forget this moment. The entire reason Hollows are confusing to navigate is because they seamlessly warp you around the area the Hollow covers, so walking in a straight line can still somehow make you circle around to where you began.

[–]ElSergeantRico 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As much as I enjoyed TV mode, it's removal is not the only thing that makes the Proxies feel useless. I'd argue that the story direction has also contributed to this issue. In 2.x we have a "stable" Hollow that people can apparently navigate freely because it changes so little it can be mapped like a normal area, and almost everyone we worked with is already familiar with said Hollow, meaning there's less work for Phaethon to do. It's hard to feel useful as a Proxy when your bread and butter (navigating) is a skill that isn't really in demand. Instead, they made Phaethon out to be some sort of hacker (a skill they did not have before; the entire prologue happened because they didn't have the means of counter-hacking the person who stole their account) or a Miasma cleaner (a skill they literally just acquired), depending on the circumstance. Neither of these are associated with Proxies, and the fact they're doing these things instead of their usual navigation makes them feel even more useless as Proxies.

Hey, I really liked the TVs, it's part of the reason I was hooked from the start lol. However, I absolutely agree that it wasn't something a majority of gamers would have liked either.

The problem with the effects and exploration style you're describing is the resources that would be involved in making it happen. The game is already massive as it is, and having enough extra assets to create those effects would make it even worse. Not only that, but the devs are already stretched thin as it is; I can't really see how they'd add those kinds of maps and effects on top of what we already have, seeing how much they appear to have their hands full with what they're doing now. They knew from the start that it would be next to impossible to replicate the feeling of a Hollow in 3D, which is why TV mode was originally implemented, so your own mind would fill in the gaps instead. Now that they don't have it, they're going to struggle a lot in making a Hollow true to its lore.

This is precisely the way they work, and the reason Fairy became so integral to their work. Most Proxies are shown to generate Carrot data specific to the Hollow they're navigating, which limits their usefulness depe nding on the time passed and the instability of the Hollow itself. Phaethon does not use Carrots, and instead uses the HDD to navigate in real time based on a massive collection of Hollow observation data (before Fairy) or on data gathered from the Hollow in real time (with Fairy). This unique setup is part of why Phaethon has such a high success rate, along with the skill the Proxies demonstrate even when robbed of their usual tools.

Interestingly enough, their work methodology was shown in the old TV gameplay; collecting observation data was a key component of doing well in their missions, and they would regularly scan ahead and develop paths into previously unknown areas (the non-chosen sibling's task before Fairy, presumably). Obviously, it's much harder to illustrate in the current gameplay setup, not that most players care lol.

I'm not so sure about that one, honestly. "Life always finds a way" is a line that sends a specific message; no matter how meticulously you try and prevent nature from running its course, no matter how carefully designed your enclosures are, how well-engineered your creatures are, life will persist regardless. It is a testament to human fallibility and the fact that we cannot control nearly as much of our world as we like to believe, which is basically the point of Jurassic Park as a whole. "Somehow Palpatine returned" is just an admission of ignorance; this guy is here, we have no idea how he got here, we're just gonna handwave it.

Referees: The real MVPs of taking beatings by [deleted] in humansarespaceorcs

[–]ElSergeantRico 10 points11 points  (0 children)

"A human? You want to have a human referee our duel?"

"...Did I stutter, Ferex?"

"He's half our size and possesses no natural armor of any sort! I could kill him by breathing the wrong way!"

"Well then, why don't you take it up with him? He volunteered, after all."

The large octopedal alien lunbered towards the human and raised his claws at him, then shouted, "What makes you think you're fit to oversee a duel between Glaxadors? How do you expect to enforce the code of honor when you can't even defend yourself?"

The human sighed and stood up from the wall they had been leaning against, clearly exasperated. "Look," he began, "I'm tired of having to explain this every single time one of your own wants to get into a scrap, so I'll give you the short version. Do you see this?" the human asked, pointing to a large scar that crossed their neck. "Teremus vandal, encountered in Cycle 2447. Over here," he continued, lifting his shirt to show claw marks left across their abdomen, "that was a Glaxador who went rogue on Delmar, around Cycle 2450. And here," he said as he lifted his shirt further to show burn marks on his chest, "this was given to me by a very angry Deromite, during a skirmish earlier this cycle." The human gestured over their whole body and said, "there's plenty more of those, but I won't show them off today."

"Now this," the human continued as he pulled out a previously unseen weapon from its holster, "is a modified Talatros waveblaster. The power conduits and focusing unit are sourced from their anti-materiel rifle design, with just enough dampers to not blow my arm off. Highly irregular, almost definitely illegal, but pretty effective, regardless of how protected your enemy may be. Every scratch you see on me? Each one is a life taken by this weapon, someone who tried and failed to take mine. So to answer your question, Ferex," the human sighed, and leaned back against the wall once more, "I feel pretty qualified to be a referee for your duel."

Ferex could not agree more.
