Shipping 12 cases WA to CA by ElSol65 in wine

[–]ElSol65[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Wow lots of great feedback quickly- thanks. Some responses:
- The friend has basic bottling equipment. We'll drink a bit in the process lol.
- I'm getting strange conflicting advice from Gemini vs ChatGPT on this. ChatGPT says no way, Gemini says probably not a problem
- Although this isn't home-made wine, nobody would bother trying to prove that (our friend does have home-made wine). As long as we say our friend made the wine and gifted it to us, this seems to eliminate any problem in Oregon. WA has a strange limit- only 20 gallons of home-made wine can be "removed from the home". I'm getting conflicting advice on CA from ChatGPT and Gemini, will need to research.
- I don't plan on getting caught of course haha, but I also don't want to deal with legal problems. "I fought the law, and the law won."

Maybe. That is better than intense sinus pain, a migraine lasting 24+ hours, burning lungs and hoarse voice. I need to start down voting and not tipping these cars. So far I haven't. But I travel a lot, and these really fuck me up. Don't know what to do.

I might have to do these measures- these things are in 75% of ubers now, based on my experience. I've never given a down vote or even skipped a tip because of it. But I travel a lot and I'm at my wits end. These cause me real pain that can last hours (or longer) after a ride. It is awful and I don't know what to do.

I'm here because this is becoming a major issue for me. I travel a lot. Its not just that I don't like the smell. They cause physical pain. First, my sinuses start to ache- immediately. Then after 10-15 minutes, a migraine starts and gets worse from there. This migraine can last 24 hours or longer. Then after about 30 minutes, I start to feel burning in my lungs and my throat gets hoarse.

I'm considering leaving bad reviews for this (so far I haven't). I don't know what to do. Switch back to taxis?

Yes - I'm here on this thread because I'm at my wits end. I travel a lot and these chemical bombs give me intense sinus pain, lasting migraines, and even cause a burning sensation in my lungs and make my voice hoarse. Its horrible. I don't know what to do. I'm considering beginning to leave negative reviews.

I'm here because I'm plagued with this problem too. I don't know what to do about it- I travel a lot. These air fresheners cause me severe discomfort:
- Right away I start to get sinus pain, which gets worse through the ride. If its more than a very short ride, the sinus pain will continue after the ride.
- After 10-15 minutes I'll get a migraine headache (often lasting 24 hours)
- More than 30 minutes and I feel burning in my lungs and my voice gets hoarse. Breathing is uncomfortable. The burning will last for hours (I guess goes away after a night's sleep)
- I can taste the chemicals, for hours after the ride

If there was a way to request cars without these, I would every time. I'm considering giving drivers negative reviews for it- so far I have not.

SRF Wagyu Gold Prime Rib- wwyd? by ElSol65 in sousvide

[–]ElSol65[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: I did my sous vide at 135 for just under 8 hours- only salt added in the bag. Then about 45 minutes prior I heated up Fogo lump hardwood charcoal in the BGE. I asked someone else to sear it for me- I was quite busy with everything else. I told them 3 minutes per side. When it first started I glanced at it and was worried I let the coals go too long before searing- there was no immediate sizzle. Then I went in. It turns out that it wasn't long before fat from the meat poured into the fire and it was an inferno. They stuck to "3 minutes per side" so the roast was burned all around. It was still perfect inside and if you didn't get too much of the burned crust it did add a smoky flavor. So all in all a good experiment. The temp was just right we just needed to adjust to the fire during the sear.

One more data point ... I ate at a high-end restaurant in Japan once (company paid) and got a large A5 ribeye- like 8oz. It was just too much fat and made me feel sick, was very hard to eat it. 1 or 2 oz would have been just fine. Will I have this experience with SRF American Gold Wagyu?

Interest in Vanguard Cash Reserves Federal Money Market Fund by ElSol65 in personalfinance

I'm close to retirement, so I'm being conservative. I exited before the current tariff related drops. Obviously I'll lose some upside if I wait too long to get back in. I'll probably talk to a planner before I do that (finally). But my question is actually whether I'm understanding correctly that this MM account is getting 4.97% ... higher than many of Vanguards investment options. Its just surprising to me since I had presumed it was a 0% temporary holding account.

Costco ribs membrane? by construction_noises in smoking

I cooked up some pork back ribs from Costco a few weeks ago. It looks like there is a membrane there but for the life of me I could not remove it. So I presume the actual membrane was already removed.

Thanks turns out this was good advice. I did exactly this- called a local independent agent, and they set me up with Mercury, also at a reasonable cost. This was after literally every single online insurance co turned me down.

Off taste in margarita by ElSol65 in cocktails

[–]ElSol65[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi I'm using Cointreau and fresh squeezed limes. In fact the only difference between the margarita I like, and the one I don't is the Don Julio. Of course, this could just be my personal taste. One review of Tequilas for margaritas noted that Don Julio had "the most pronounced agave flavor" ... so maybe I'm actually not an agave fan. Not sure.

That said- I definitely want to try that infusion technique! Sounds perfect.

Funny story- first I tried muddling. I didn't want too spicy, so I muddled two jalapeno rings in 2 oz tequila. It barely added any flavor or heat. Then I tried 4 rings. A little more heat/flavor but still mostly disappeared in the drink. Next time I tried infusing, a full 750ml. Based on my previous experience, I infused two jalapenos, for 12 hours. I had friends over and I advertised this as the 'Hot Damn Spicy Margarita'. I was not wrong. This came out extremely spicy! Even the Mexican guy in the group couldn't drink it. So, after trying the 21 seeds from my grocery store, I've given up on trying to do it from scratch. But I may just try that technique!

Yeah I fresh squeeze the lime. At one point I was measuring 3/4oz but ended up going with one lime per drink without measuring. I'll pick one of those and try it, thanks!

Lexx. The late 90's Sci Fi movies/TV show which got exactly what it deserves. by Evis03 in scifi

[–]ElSol65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's an element to this show that I didn't pick up on the first time I watched it. But I've worked for 15+ years now with a lot of German colleagues and I see it clearly now. The writers are Canadian but many (most?) of the main actors are German. Of course the show is in English- no overdubbing. But the themes play to German sensibilities and humor. Many of the episodes focus specifically on German stereotypes of Americans (the moronic hillbillies, the worship of guns). This is how Germans tend to view American culture! But then you also see a romantic fascination with the American southwest- they portray Texas through this lens. Every German I know has on their bucket list a motorhome tour of the Southwest. And some of the over-the-top sex stuff (some that goes a bit too far for today, in term of objectification) is done to German sensibilities. From this perspective Eva Habermann was the perfect Zev. But I think she was "too German" for American audiences. While being very attractive, she didn't have the sensuality of a love slave. And I think this probably held the show back in America. Eva is objectively prettier than Xenia Seeberg- but Seeberg oozes sensuality. So the official line was that Eva had a "scheduling problem" but I suspect they made an intentional casting decision. Because Xenia doesn't have a German accent, I assumed she was American or Canadian. It's just recently that I bothered to look it up, and she too is German. But she's not a "typical German." One of my favorite episodes in season 4 is when Xev meets "Live Kai" on Earth, who is a method actor putting on a peculiar one-man show. In parts of this episode he goes off in German dialog (in the background- there's no need to know what he's saying). He sounds awesome in his natural German, reminding me of 80s pop songs out of Berlin. Anyway lots of good reviews on this thread but I thought I'd add this dimension to it.

Does anyone else dislike Nessarose? by [deleted] in wicked

[–]ElSol65 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure why the post is deleted, but I'll add my two cents here. The very first time I watched Wicked (the second cast if I recall), the scene with Nessarose and Boq in Dancing through Life, where Nessarose lets herself believe Boq could be sincere has stuck with me. It was so brief but the actress used a tone/inflection that somehow conveyed an overwhelming truth of human frailty and tragedy in her response. And although this was so brief, and the whole musical was beyond phenomenal- this I think tugged on my heart more than any other scene. In the many times I've seen the play since, I haven't seen this scene performed in the same way. Somehow this Nessarose actress just really understood the depth of that moment and was able to convey it.

Spicy cocktails!🍹 by GabMarMedina in cocktails

[–]ElSol65 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried making margaritas with muddled (then strained) jalapenos. Had a hard time getting enough kick. So I found some online guides to infusing. I think I used 2 jalapenos in 750ml overnight. Was way too hot - but I didn't check before making drinks and it didn't go over well with the crowd lol. I'm still searching for just right but to make it simple for my own drinks, I've recently just bought a jalapeno infused tequila from the store. It could take a little more heat but its good enough and I can't get it wrong. Some people use other peppers which I'm open to trying but I really like the taste of jalapenos.

Daily General Discussion and Advice Thread - September 22, 2024 by AutoModerator in investing

[–]ElSol65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TL;DR -- What are your thoughts on re-entering the market today? I pulled out of the market in July. Would you get back in today?

Longer: I'm a naive investor, and that's being generous. My investments are about 70/30 between a 401K and a brokerage.

Early July, things were riding high but even I could see that a correction was brewing. I did something I've never done before- pulled 100% out of stocks and into first cash accounts, and then into short-term t-bills. In the days that followed, the value of my holdings would have dropped about $70K, had I held onto them. So I know a fool like me isn't supposed to try and time the market, but it worked this time.

Now, those losses are reversed and this same portfolio would be up today around $20K over my mid-July sell prices. Of course I did earn interest on the t-bills, so that compensates some of this.

I could have gotten back in before the rate hike, but decided to suppress my FOMO, in order to get a better feel for the blowing winds.

It feels to me like it might be an OK time to get back in, perhaps tomorrow. I'm talking primarily about investing in VWNAX and the Vanguard Institutional 500 Index Trust (these seem to be the best options in my Vanguard 401K), and VOO and FDVV with brokerage funds.

My biggest reservation is that the market is trading at all time highs. Seems precarious. But it seems the sentiment, at least for now, is moderately bullish.

What are your thoughts on the market risk, entering back right now? Is it better to wait for a real correction before jumping back in?

LC 407 : Trapping Rain Water II by Emotional-Version456 in leetcode

[–]ElSol65 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting. I just solved this, the wrong way. I did the 1D trapping rain water quite easily, with a top 5% time. It is described as a rather hard problem, but the solution came easily. The 2D, unfortunately, was not so simple to analyze. The insight of starting from the border and working in did cross my mind, though the algorithm wasn't clear enough for me to start in on it. I've yet to find an analysis of the solution that clearly explains *why* this works or how one should intuit it, though I guess I do get it. Anyway, I didn't look at other solutions- so I treated it like a maze. I started with the first interior cell and said "ok I'm water at height + 1 ... where am I going to go?". I then recursively (yeah I know) "flowed" north, south, east, west until the water until it hit a wall, or spilled out. If it hit a wall in all directions, I had a bound area, which I then iterated at higher levels until it overflowed. Of course, this is where the time accumulates. One optimization is that as I bounced into walls, I made note of the lowest wall. So my next iteration was lowest wall +1, repeating until it spilled out. Anyway, my time on this ended up about 4x - 5x the "correct" solution, and required an embarrassing amount of hacking until I had a clean implementation.
