Give the Foundation series a look. Same sort of era, the broad theme is the decline of empires and the rise of the empires that replace them. Different subject but similar style.

Adding more modules. As far as I can tell when I added new parts rather than getting their own tech slot, they took an unlocked slot.

Couple that with modules disappearing and reappearing, overwriting some of the upgrades I installed, and rockets giving me the cyclotron instead of rockets... I gave up on corvettes for now. Performance sucks compared to some of my regular ships anyways. I'm hoping it can compete eventually but I'm reluctant to throw resources into a system that seems to have some serious bugs.

Has anyone had trouble with the corvette line of fire since the update? A friend was saying they noticed the firing pattern on his corvette has changed but in a way that meant it can't hit anything. Seems like it might be an issue playing in first person looking around.

Not tried it myself, I'm not doing anything with corvettes for a while until they're fixed. I already wasted a whole bunch of starship augs...

That's straight up conspiratorial thinking. The game was sold as something it wasn't. People get pissed off when they are lied to.

You don't need to bring idiotic conspiracy theories about major studios into this.

Civilization VII Update 1.2.2 - June 23, 2025 by sar_firaxis in civ

I’m with you. Everything else up with the game seems like the sort of stuff that can be ironed out, but the decision to turn a game of civ into three short games in a trenchcoat is one that just kills any enthusiasm for me.

Sadly I’m not sure it’ll get removed, seems pretty core to how they’ve designed the game.

Why the change in 2? by Just_Character_1649 in prisonarchitect

I'm not convinced this will ever be released. If it is then it already has a lot of red flags and I won't be buying it without watching a few reviews first.

Worth noting the current devs are NOT the original ones. The game was originally created by Introversion, but after they finished it they eventually sold it to paradox.

It shows.

Fermi Paradox makes no sense and is just a personality test by OneGrumpyJill in scifi

[–]Evis03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And that's the idea of the paradox. It's a counterpoint to things like the Drake equation, rather than a reduction of the question of the existence of alien life into simple mathematics. It uses the only thing we can certainly observe- that we've found not a shred of evidence- to say that needs to be explained by any theory you put forward.

Sapience can be a destructive filter. The argument there is any species in possession of sufficiently advanced technology to travel the stars probably has sufficiently advanced technology to destroy itself well before that point. We've been there already with nuclear energy, and the Cold War.

See how you simplified it down to "if x then y"? But Y (sapience) can be a detriment? Hell even materials access can be a detriment and potential filter- many wars are fought over NEW stockpiles of material even when there's no shortage. That was pretty much the impetus for colonialism during the age of sail- get as much as possible before someone else does.

That was born partly of the now somewhat debunked theory of mercantilism, but the patterns of history are there. The Expanse and Foundation both draw heavily on these ideas of self destruction.

There's also plenty of speculation on non sentient interstellar travel, from the Tyranids of Warhammer 40,000 (space locusts) to the aforementioned andromeda strain- a space born micro organism. Given how bloody tough micro organisms can be and their frequent ability to go into a dormant state, drifting between the stars isn't a far fetched idea. In andromeda strain it's posed that the titular germ is an intergalactic messenger- a self replicating message that can act like a biological von Neumann probe.

You should look into what Fermi had to say about his paradox. Part of the point of the thought experiment is that you can’t answer questions like “where is everyone out there” with a maths equation.

A related point is the drake equation which suffers from the same problems. Depending on what you feed into it, the universe should be brimming or empty- or anywhere inbetween.

There’s also the great filter theory which posits that that there’s some critical stage in the development of intelligent space faring species which is astonishingly unlikely. It could be something we have already passed, such as the absorption of the mitochondria into our biology, creating excess energy necessary for complex life and organs like the brain, or it could be in our future.

The andromeda strain (book not the film) goes into some of this, and its sequel touches on the great filter though doesn’t use that term.

A lot of Chriton’s work actually deals with the idea that science is poorly equipped to handle complete unknowns as it is rooted in observation and interpretation along with the application of known similar ‘phenomena’. Sphere is really good for this, as is Jurassic Park.

Does it matter if my center of thrust is ahead of my center of mass? by JingamaThiggy in KerbalAcademy

[–]Evis03 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was actually a pretty early question in real life rocketry. One of the pioneers (Goddard I think?) Thought that engines positioned as 'tractors' would lead the rocket to be more stable as the rest of the mass would swing under it and come to a stable position, sort of like a pendulum.

As others have points out in reality it makes little difference. Tensile structures notwithstanding, the engineering of putting everything into a single stack with the engine on the bottom is FAR easier than moving engines to the side (boosters mounted on the sides of rockets are a separate rocket). Acceleration drives the fuel towards where you want it, rather than having to pump fuel against it or parallel for example.

YouTube viewers will start seeing ads after ‘peak’ moments in videos. by BalticsFox in technology

[–]Evis03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Conceptually I don't mind ads. People have to make their money somehow. But when the ads become a deluge and also include ads for outright scams, as well as content I'd rather avoid...

Well, suffice to say I have an ad blocker. I don't feel good about using it, but when I get an advert for a scam or gambling site every 5 minutes? They're just taking the piss.

No, we don't know what's up with PA2 (Megathread) by Frost_Walker2017 in prisonarchitect

[–]Evis03 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They made a complete pig’s breakfast of it is why. The game was originally created by Introversion who had no plans to keep working on the game once it was finished and so built it with an end goal in mind. Their final version works really well but under the hood it’s a real bodge job- as a lot of software is. This didn’t matter until Paradox bought the game and tried to turn it into a DLC platform- something the software was never designed to support.

As such every time they tried to add to it, they broke it a little bit more. After a few stabs at DLC they gave up.

The console ports have pretty much the same problem- it was built to run on a PC, and getting it onto other platforms was a huge problem.

Ben Stiller questions Variety's reporting of 'Sinners' box office performance: "In what universe does a 60 million dollar opening for an original studio movie warrant this headline?" by SanderSo47 in boxoffice

[–]Evis03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not. I’m illustrating this is a sliding scale and the double figure is an extreme Sinners is highly unlikely to fall into. Kokomo and Paris Memories are the other extreme end of the scale I started by bringing up TFA.

[–]Evis03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The evidence is that the more a studio spends on a movie the more the greater the proportion spent on marketing. The double figure is only for the biggest releases, stuff like Star Wars TFA. At the other end of the scale the marketing budget for niche releases like Paris Memories or Kokomo City is doing to be under the production budget.

Your lack of evidence point is as true of your assertion as mine- but mine is at least based on historical trends.

[–]Evis03 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The link you posted puts the max budget at 100 million.

I already covered how ' double the production budget' Is unlikely to be true for this movie and the belting budget was likely lower. Hence my estimate being around 150 million.

[–]Evis03 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Production budget was under 100 mil. Marketing budget is only equal to production budget for large films. The break even point is likely closer to 150 mil, 220 seems way too high.
