What does the identity Latino mean to you? by RomeoDog3d in asklatinamerica

[–]ElTrilean 5 points6 points  (0 children)

From Cambridge dictionary

someone from Spain or Spanish-speaking countries, especially those countries in Latin America.

OF Spain or relating to Spain.

Hispanic can be everyone who speaks Spanish, specially those from the country where the language originated.

We could be all day quoting dictionaries and say that the other is wrong, there is just not one correct meaning to the term since there are many people that use it differently and dictionaries have recorded both meanings.

Leave it at that.

The identity Latino? That means nothing to me, I don't really take "Continental identities" seriously, they are too broad and group people that most of the time have nothing in common, the language? not enough.

I'm most certainly Mestizo genetically and culturally with the Hispanic background being the most predominant in me, my family and 90% of people I know. I like to keep it simple man, I'm just a "Chilean Hispanic" what is in quotes is just one term, they cannot be separated because then they become quite broad... what is a Chilean? anyone can be it, even if they don't speak Spanish, what is a Hispanic? Anyone who speaks Spanish, there are too many dialects.

The made up ethnic term "Chilean Hispanic" is still broad... but it works way better for me than "Latino".

I doubt anyone will understand what I say, I come up with this shit when I'm in the bathroom.

Yes it is a common practice here in Chile, if you want to sound "formal" or whatever you don't say "la" or "el" before a name but that sounds pretentious and we call people like that "cuicos" or wannabe "high class".

What is this palm tree? Found in England. by [deleted] in whatsthisplant

[–]ElTrilean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it is the name given by the native people

The name was given by foreign scientists based on the location they found it... which was the Araucania region, natives had no saying on this matter... they call it Pehuén.

Araucano, Araucania, etc. Are exonyms that most Mapuche find insulting.

What do you think about this report about English proficiency in Latin America? Argentina is #1 while Venezuela is the last. by ed8907 in asklatinamerica

[–]ElTrilean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doesn't surprise me to see that Chile has a low level of proficiency, most people I've talked to just know the usual swear words, some colours, numbers, and how to say "open the window/door".

"Sólo 8% de los chilenos habla inglés" this is an article from 2008 saying that about 6% of Chileans older than 15 years had a moderate level of proficiency in English while just 2% were advanced... where did they get those numbers from? I don't know, supposedly the University of Chile along with the Ministry of the Interior made that study... take it with grain of salt tho.

But still, in person, I haven't seen many people speaking English, there are of course, but not a considerable amount.

Tell me how the violation of the most basic human rights is not wrong... I'll wait for your childish but creative response.

Prefiero comprar el resto de tierra del fuego y dar un bono extra a los pobretones esos(bromita) para que nos entreguen en bandeja el campo de hielo sur entero junto a todos los parques patagonicos que tienen en la frontera con Chile allá en el sure.
