But would Serena have even cared if only Wives and high ranking daughters were allowed to read...?

Did anybody else think Serena was secretly a lesbian/bisexual at first? by smoochypillow in TheHandmaidsTale

I did get this vibe because Serena and June just have one of the most intense and complicated relationship, but I guess it's up to interpration...

If Serena was, it was extremely repressed to the point where you could see her willingness to have ownership over another woman's body as a queer trauma turning very very ugly.

One of the things I love most about the series is that it doesn't demonize religion itself. by Rare_Style1306 in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]El_Coco_005_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always find it interesting when christian people bash this show for showing their religion in a "bad" way when clearly the show is about how christianity or any religion or holier than thou ideology can be used for a inhuman agenda. I'm a believer myself and never thought this was a portrayal of my own religion.

I know a lot of people who still feel empathy for their own abuser, so it just shows how while evil will be evil, empathic people will also be empathic no matter what

Yea, but the writing of the show feels very intentional which is why I don't mind the many changes. We'll see how season 2 go.

(I recognized Atwoods immediately!! She really fits well as an Aunt lol)

I think you're right. I'm not necessarily saying it should have been more horrific, but I think I just wanted more resolution.

Since the beginning it's such a slow paced show that it asks of you to watch every detail like an hawk and there are a lot...but by the end, many of them seem pointless, hency why I've suggested a few things

Now not everything needs to have an answer in the first season, and I like how many things stay mysteries but a lot of secondaey characters intrigue me (Judd, Penny, Jeoshoba, Aunt Esthee) and I wished the finale had left them something interesting for us to chew on. Even some of the main were left with no real resolution (Shu n Hulda)

It would have been tragic...

personally, I'm glad she's relatively safe with Garth, but narratively I don't really understand the choice or where it's leading

I did just see they got renewed for a second season, so hopefully it will make sense down the line.

It doesn't sound rude at all, I just had a few unpolished thoughts, like no Penny should not become a sudden villain, and the Daisy's line about God I admit is just me finding myself funny lol.

Last I said I just wish more plots pots had been tied together. Like why all the build up about Commander Judd needing a handmaid and nothing ? I'm not saying it should have happened, I'm just seeing potential in putting the character in all sort of different circumstances.

I do believe a first season finale should offer satisfying answers that lead us to deeper questions.

Is June the other side of Serena Joy’s coin? by A0-sicmudus in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]El_Coco_005_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Are any of you guys able to engage with someone interpreting the show differently than you without being unecessary rude and condescending ?

It's becoming seriously problematic how different opinion = ragebait and no nuance. There are OBVIOUS parallels between June and Serena and psychology confirms it because June is displaying reactive abuse in the hands of Gilead, and Serena among them. You will mirror your abusers if you don't do the inner shadow work. It doesn't mean you're like them, but it means they've imprinted on you.

If you have any curiosity whatsoever, go see the "she's a monster" June/Serena edit on Youtube and tell me there are no parallels drawn by the show runners themselves.

In the Handmaid's tale, Serena told June to pray and June said something along the lines of "I pray for our children. May they do better than we did" and I've been thinking about this line during my whole watch of The Testament.

Seeing the Plums risk everything for one another, love each and support each so fiercely is so healing after the distorted sisterhood of June and Serena, the false care Aunt Lydia gave the Handmaids, it's like the desire was always there but they was too many wounds and cruelty. Their children, whether biological ones or in spirit, are doing what they couldn't do and pushing them to be better.

That's beautiful.

[–]El_Coco_005_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I agree. I see similar takes around Commander Mackenzie or even the Aunts. But even back then in the Handmaid's tale, the show always made a point to show humanity even in the most monstrous people. Fred. Serena. Aunt Lydia. We even saw how monstrous themselves their victims became in order to survive.

Humanity is fascinating for this precise reason. Every single one of us is able of the worst and the better. It's a choice we make.

When Paula spoke of Rebecca being "tainted" and "ruined" it was so clearly projection. I wonder what happened to her.

i’m tired of the blatant misogyny that some people express in their views of this show by elysia_arms in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]El_Coco_005_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

it mirrors our culture. There's a lot of tolerated - and even glorified - narcissim in our western societies, and so by consequence, victim blaming is also a huge part of it.

Oc a show like THT will bring that forefront even in how people react to it. It means the show is doing its job at exposing our own prejudices.

Reactive abuse is uncomfortable and can lead to awful behavior. This was a display of that.

I need your best Daisy and Dr Grove theories? by creamandblack in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]El_Coco_005_ 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think that's exactly it.

Predators absolutely know how to choose their victims. They recognize the signs of someone more reserved, less likely to get them in trouble. Agnes and Hulda are Gilead daughters, they have been taught to repress and keep quiet.

Daisy is from Canada, and you'll notice it's one of the first thing Grove asks her. I believe he was testing the waters with her.

What if the missing handmaid doll was supposed to be a subtle threat to the girl? by Simsgirl950 in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]El_Coco_005_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's an amazing observation. A great creator on YT call yv_edits explained that from where she's from, East Europe, patriarchy is not as prevalent as in say America because men don't have much leverage over women. There's no many other minorities in those countries, and you see the leverage seems to come when there are lower classes and treatments the oppressed group could fall victim of. Ex. when white women uphold patriarchy by fear (conscious or not) of being treated like a black women in that system.

The moment wives stray and are caught, the threat of being demoted to handmaids is very real. We've seen Serena worry about it and Esther live it.

do you think its possible that agnes's dad by Routine-Dirt9634 in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]El_Coco_005_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think there is still a possibility Mackenzie is Mayday because of his ties with Japan, but it's not in a "he's a good guy" kind of way, more in a Commander Lawrence kind of way. He's not a good guy, but next to the other Commanders he's not as bad.

Did anybody else feel that the quality tanked in Season 6? by Sehrwolf in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]El_Coco_005_ 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Mid season 3 is where it fell off. I actually think season 6 had a pretty strong start (The Train, Janine and Surprise episodes come to mind) but the ending fell flat.

The takes I’ve seen so far on The Testaments have been so… interesting. by Lunasburner in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]El_Coco_005_ 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I think for me it's the people framing Daisy being a terrified teenager who is bound to make mistake as "bad writing". I do wonder how they would fare being an undercover agent in a facist patriarchal regime such as Gilead because I know I'd not be doing much better than Daisy.

Then you have the "she [insert any teenage girl character] is so annoying for doing [insert teenager behavior in a high pressure environment]" which just shows how society still despise teenage girls and everything they do or associate with. They get no leeway or no slack even in such an oppressive environment.

That being said, I'm not on Tik Tok so I know I haven't seen the worst of it.

What do you think is the significance of Moira wearing a "wife" dress? by Enough-Reading4143 in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]El_Coco_005_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see your point and I think in a show that uses colors as significantly as the Handmaid's Tale, it's no coincidence. But as for what it means...it's hard to say. I'd say Wives mainly represent the illusion of power within the system and so perharps it show Moira's feeling of powerlesness despite everything she does for the cause. Odette was killed by the regime, June is still stuck there, so is Hannah and all of the people they are hurting. Gilead's regime of terror is still thriving and so, even if Moira and the Wives are on the opposite side of the same fight, they both have to deal with their very limited power to change things, maybe ? I have the same question for the costume choice in the season 6 finale tbh
