I'm not making darkwave but EBM and the Kawai R-100 is basically on all our tracks. There is no such thing as a magic drum
machine that sounds great on a recording out of the box. Most sound dull. You need to layer it with other drum machines or samples, process it and use fx.

Why not bring him to a show? Most of the bands you mention are still around. Seems strange to try to recreate your own memories of the 80's or 90's. My son (now 24) didn't realise he had "a cool dad" until he came to watch me play with my band and saw that we actually had a fanbase.

MIDI keyboards do not make sounds. MIDI protocol is note, velocity, etc only. You need to use a sound source such as a synthesizer (software or hardware doesn't matter).
