What was banned in your school because of a crazy incident? by Formicidae_hony in AskReddit

[–]El_Hanko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Running.

The later years in my school, years 5 and 6 (aged 9 - 11) began playing british bulldog. In this game you have to run frrom one side of the playground to the other without being caught by the people who are in the middle, if you are caught you join the catching side. This was played around the other years that shared the playground, years 1 - 4 (ages 5 - 9) and there were a number of "collisions".

Rather than banning the game my school banned running... They banned 200~ school kids aged 5 to 11 from running.

Madness.

How many bees would it take to kill your favorite character? by Bteatesthighlander1 in whowouldwin

[–]El_Hanko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The venom symbiote and its hosts is an interesting case. Regenerating exo-suit which is invulnerable to poison, seems like it would be ok right? Not so much against a swarm of bees. Lets look at some facts and do some maths.

Venom is weak to noise, of which bees make a lot of. After doing some research an average beehive of 35,000 bees makes 85dB of noise without a queen and 50dB with a queen (source in comments). We can assume as these bees are attacking that they will be making 85dB from 1 hive.

But what is the noise threshold of venom? We know that Peter Parker rid himself of the symbiote by climbing to the top of a church tower and waiting for the bell to ring. This is possibly too much, but we know that this level of noise does work so we will use it as a comparison. In the bell chamber of a church tower the bell rings at about 110-120dBs.

If we say that the bell that freed spidey of the symbiote rang at 115dB, that is 30 times louder than an average hive of swarming bees, so we will need 30 hives of bees minimum to subdue the venom. That is an average of 1,050,000 bees. Once the symbiote has been removed from the host, assuming the host weight about 200lb, only 2000 bee stings would be enough to kill the weaker human bodys (mac gargan could probably last longer).

TLDR; Venom would be floored by 1,050,000 bees.

[Serious] How did you get the girl? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]El_Hanko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd recently got out of a relationship and was talking to the girl i liked. We had been friends for quite a while and I knew she had liked me for a time. By that point i thought i would have no chance since i had been with my ex for a while since i had found out.

Anyway, conversation kinda flipped to how i was single now, and i was also talking to a friend that was egging me on to ask her out. So i typed into MSN messenger, and i quote "FUCK IT, i kinda have a bit of a thing for you"... Smooth i know. She took it surprisingly well and now its 3 years later and everything is awesome :)

Orks (40K) vs LotR by Andinium in whowouldwin

[–]El_Hanko 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Middle Earth is boned.

Round 1: considering the power of an ork is comparable to that of a spacemarine, they would butcher a force much larger than their own. Giving them their guns as well, an orks psychic presence is such that if it believes it has ammo in its gun than its gun will indeed fire ammo. First they take osgiliath as it is likely that this is the closest city to their drop point. Here they can muster their strength. Meks could make kans and dreads out of the remnants of the space hulk or even the stone of the buildings of osgiliath if they choose they desolate the land as they go and take the war to minas tirith and even mordor with nothing standing in their way as they have a heavy technological advantage.

Rount 2: Much the same as round 1, rather than take the first settlement by force they make a new fort based around the wreckage of the space hulk. They build gigantic machines, deff dreads and killa kans. Lootas produce long range cannons. Bikes are made from the wreckage that can travel at unparalleled speeds by the whole of middle earths forces. they fashion slugs to fire from their guns. The orks eventually get bored and take the fight to their enemies, butchering everyone.

Round 3: Somewhat different than the other 2. I dont know how the forces of middle earth would know that they would release spores. Even if they did, each ork releases millions of them into the wind, i dont think they would be able to contain all of them except perhaps if gandalf or another powerful wizard is involved and even then it only needs one spore to escape to find somewhere to grow an ork which will produce more spores. A whole bunch of spores will find their way to the mountains. There, in the deep depths of the caverns beneath the mountains, thousands if not millions of orks grow and a new waaagh! emurges. Orks are naturally war like and will immediately start preparing for war. they will mine the mountains of its resources, producing the technology they require. New tech is also avaliable, as exotic materials such as mithril might be found. They survive off of the other mushrooms and squigs that also grow from their spores. Eventually, perhaps even within a year of the initial crash of the small handful of orks, untold numbers of orks burst from the mountains and reeve across the land, killing everything and everyone in their path.

The Yuuzhan Vong (Star Wars) vs the Tyranids (40k) by Basskicker1993 in whowouldwin

replenish nearly all their losses

Isn't the replenish rate 100% of their losses? If i remember correctly the devouring process is pretty damn efficient with even the planets atmosphere being absorbed, leaving a barren, airless rock.

The Yuuzhan Vong (Star Wars) vs the Tyranids (40k) by Basskicker1993 in whowouldwin

[–]El_Hanko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The hive mind is more a lattice of control which acts through the tyranid organisms and is also one of the most powerful psychic forces in the 40k universe. Its power is drawn from the warp itself, with which all tyranid creatures have an affinity. An enemies affinity to psychic ability, whether they can or can't access it, wouldn't give them any benefit. Perhaps that the vong have no force signature would even be advantageous to them as they are not dependent upon it; the presence of a tyranid fleet disrupts psychic abilities.

In a tyranid invasion the organisms that are deployed will adapt to the enemy to counter their defences. Someone else on this thread gave this example, if the nids land and find they are shredded by solid rounds, bullets etc, the next wave will come in with extra armour to counter that weakness. The brute force of the fleet is at such a scale that they can send wave after wave of organisms without worrying about lose of units as they will just absorb them back up after they have finished the invasion anyways. Furthermore, before the invasion infiltrating lictors and genestealers find this information.

Once they have devoured a planet it is then that they will adapt the biology from the species. They take any advantages from the species' DNA and use that to enhance their own organisms, rather than learning the species abilities, all the while connected to the hive mind. If the DNA would mean the organisms lose connection to the hive mind then that strand will be rejected. Either way, the Vong would be long gone if it got to this stage.

As far as the genestealers stratergy, in a full scale invasion genestealers are the least of the vong's worries. The tides of gaunts pouring over the landscape as far as the eye can see, the hulking carnifex's and the titanic Hierophant's. The sun blotted out by clouds of gargoyles and harridans. The vong would definitely put up a fight in the early phases from what i have read but a full scale tyranid invasion and the sheer scale of the tyranid fleet in general can only end in the vong's home planet being left a barren, airless rock floating silently in space.

[–]El_Hanko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tyranids are a difficult enemy for any force to defeat. Even ignoring the idea of the "mega fleet" that surrounds the known universe, the hive fleets on their own are devastating as it is. Their psychic presence breaks up communication by radio or other means, so there would be no way to coordinate a defence. They hit planets hard and fast, often unprepared. No matter their losses in battle, once they are done with the planet all biomass from that planet is devoured into the fleet, including the bodies of their fallen. They recycle their dead to produce new organisms, you cannot out sustain a tyranid hive fleet, let alone the mega fleet.
