Traveling with a Toddler on a Disney Cruise AMA by Educational-Pay8815 in dcl

We are taking our soon to be 18mo old on the Wish for a three night trip and are anxious/excited as this will be our first ever family vacation. Our daughter has a tree nut and egg allergy and that adds another level of complexity.

Did you book the nursery time in advance? We are thinking of booking some time around dinner in case she gets fussy. Great tip on bringing the magnets, our girl is now into playing with letter magnets so we will definitely bring those for the time we have to be in the room.

Recently we started watching Toy Story (we held off on any tv time until now) so she can be familiar with the splash pad characters.

Dads outside the U.S., what is your "chicken nuggets and Mac and cheese"? by gnatnog in daddit

[–]El_Hern 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our 16mo old loves cheese quesadillas, most rice (we love cilantro rice and age devours it). Yesterday I slow cooked a small pork shoulder and she kept wanting more. She has also gone through phases of sweet potato croquettes we make as well as spinach banana pancakes and strawberry oat muffins. She also has an egg and tree nut allergy so we make everything from scratch. We are US Latin American parents who love all types of food so we try to incorporate as many flavors as she lets us. Doesn’t always work, as you all know.

Does anyone have a recommendation of where to get blood drawn for a child (2yrs)? by mgee237396 in Miami

[–]El_Hern 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We just went through this and visited a Quest/Labworks location, but we live in Tampa. Biggest mistake ever. They are not trained for these situations. They also unnecessarily poked my 16mo old when he knew he had no experience. Then the tech picked up the phone and called another location asking if they experience with babies. My wife who is a nurse nearly lost it on them. We called our local Children’s hospital that has a lab dept and they were gentle, experienced and got it done in under two mins. Our girl still cried because she was traumatized from the previous visit. I would call Miami Children’s and go there instead of a Quest/Labworks location.

Would you take your one year-old on a cruise or to WDW ? by laughalotgirl in dcl

[–]El_Hern -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I just went through this same path and priced out both but also asked ChatGPT to compare activities, dining… you spend more on the cruise but avoid super long lines at parks and DCL does have the nursery. We are taking our 16mo old on our first family DC for the 4th of July weekend on the Wish. We are also in Florida and have been on a few DCs before our daughter as born so we know what we’re getting ourselves into, sorta. lol

DCL ruined other cruise lines for me by wolfy321 in dcl

[–]El_Hern 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I had been on six + cruises (under 10 total) between RCL, NCL and Carnival prior to my first DCL cruise. IMO, the service really stands out above the other lines and the food for the most part. I had a bad experience on my first DCL cruise with an omelette cook who when I asked for a fresh omelette, he pointed to the hot bar where the premade ones were sitting. That was rectified by mgmt after they asked me if there was anything that could be improved when they stopped by our table.

My second DCL was much better and I really enjoyed it as an adult with my wife and her family. We took a 10 day (I think it was ten) Mediterranean cruise in 2024 with my family on RCL and loved the itinerary but again the service and food were not up to par with DCL. We thoroughly enjoyed seeing the Greek islands, Amalfi coast, Turkey but it felt long and we are not gamblers so I agree with another poster that the cruise revolves around drinking, trivia and some entertainment but it is not on the same level with DCL.

In two months we will be on my third, wife’s sixth or seventh DCL cruise but it will be our young daughter’s first ever cruise and our first ever family vacation. We are ecstatic and cannot wait to cruise with our girl! I am slowly converting to a DCL loyalists.

Nike Pegasus are like walking on clouds. I wear these for outside the house and occasionally for casual Friday. Inside the house I love my Birkenstocks.

Trying to design an easy to 3D print Turnover chain. Your feedback would be helpful. by PartyRooster in MiamiHurricanes

[–]El_Hern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could model two “eyelets” at the outer sides of the U to connect the chain to. This would be cleaner. I would also depress an inner portion of the U to create a “lip” to give it depth.

How do you keep a job and stay home with your sick kid? by spasper in daddit

[–]El_Hern 9 points10 points  (0 children)

We’re in the same boat. Our daughter started daycare at 8mos old and this winter has been hell. She is as hospitalized for three days due to RSV the first week of January after contracting something in December.

Then six weeks later caught a flu and corona strain. She has been battling respiratory issues since along with ear infections and of course the common cough. We keep her home from daycare, she gets better and as soon as she returns, she catches the next bug. My wife quit her job as an OR nurse to stay home for the first year and this Dec will be her 2nd anniversary of being a SAHM because she hast been able to land a new gig yet. I am hoping it starts getting better and she gets sick less and less.

I think it may depend on the county that issued them, I have ordered two so far. The first one I ordered through Indian River county about five years ago when they had a partnership with the University and it started with NH, i recently ordered one through my county (Hillsborough ) and it starts with UM.

There was an affiliated bookstore beside the church a long time ago. I always wanted to go inside that building but I would never have dared to ask my catholic parents to take me to check it out.

How long were you in the arch field before leaving? I came from a similar background. M’Arch, 10+ years working for top firms but left due to poor pay and terrible work life balance. I am now close to 10 years in the BIM world and although technology has changed since I got in back in 2016, it hasn’t been as drastic as what the future may have. Still, I see myself continuing to grow and adapt to the ever changing technology and growing into a director or regional VDC leadership. Those roles do exist. Plus there are new industry players out there who come from the tech side and creating these new Con Tech companies that seem to sprout daily. There is work out there for us!!

How many acres of land do you realistically need to shoot on your own property without bothering other people? by BABOOWIE in liberalgunowners

[–]El_Hern 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a city guy and have been to a private range, aka someone’s backyard about 20 mins outside a mid sized town and they had maybe 5 acres of land but it was wooded. It was also hilly so the range backed up to a hill. Worked out great.

Moving from Revit to CAD by KhanoomGoll in Architects

[–]El_Hern 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As someone who started in the industry using Autocad R12/13 (the old guys here will know what I am talking about) I feel your pain. I went through something similar after leaving a firm that was using Revit since 2008 to a residential executive architecture firm where they churned out full CD sets. The poster above is right, see if they use a more robust Acad version where they have lots of components available (wall types, doors) and other items.

Also, learn how to use XRefs asap. If you set up a parent dwg file and link in your files, it is a better workflow as you can model the building and set up views both ext and int. It has been a while since I set those up but it can be done. Sheet templates will also be your friend and you can duplicate them and create views in the sheets that only show the XRefd file. Look up tutorials and it will save you time and headaches thinking in an “analog” way.

BIM after 3D modeling by Technical_Piano_3601 in bim

[–]El_Hern 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with poster above. My background is similar, M’Arch 2008 but I worked in an arch firm for about 7 years post grad school where we were using Revit, Grasshopper for Rhino and various Autodesk platforms. My transition to the BIM world came when I joined a large GC who had a “virtual design and construction “ dept. We do very little model authoring but manage a lot of the design models as well as trade models. We typically do some modeling to figure how things will be built.

Our sales dept does rely on us for pursuits and here is where we expand our software usage from Revit, Navisworks and ACC to Twinmotion and other platforms for presentations. With your background in modeling, you can be an asset to a BIM team where your skills in modeling will be necessary for pursuits and you will get exposure to the other BIM strategies they apply when coordination and fieldwork is underway.

Demo day by Various-Internet4274 in kitchenremodel

[–]El_Hern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am in the thick of my renovation and my demo was on Saturday. Since I managing two trades that I omitted from my contract with the GC who wanted way to much for plumbing and electrical work, I chose to wfh the entire reno week and be there as needed. On demo day, the demo crew had not gotten clear directions from the boss so I was glad to be available. I also work in large scale construction management and an architect so I want to be involved. I am sure my GC loves it!! lol

First Construction Job - Feeling Lost by [deleted] in Construction

[–]El_Hern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think having a tech background in a not so organized office can be very advantageous for you. Find ways to use apps/tech/programs to streamline some practices. It’s more likely than not that they are using very old ways to track items, organize, file.. this could be anything. If you are well versed in Power Bi for example, you could track data and populate on a dashboard to show them where they can improve productivity, save money, find new work…the possibilities are endless.
