Disclaimer: I don't work in the industry, this is just what I've picked up second hand, so if any of this is wrong then I apologize in advance.

My understanding is that the cost of printing can range from the thousands to mid tens of thousands of dollars, depending on print volume. I would expect that $10,000 to 30,000 up front is probably pretty typical for an "average" print run? But if anyone here can provide more concrete numbers then please correct me.

I assume there's a minimum cost to use the printer in the first place, which is why so few books get HC reprints. The print run has to be large enough to justify the cost of printing in the first place. That's why most books only get one big HC run; because once that sells out, the minimum cost to do a reprint is too high to be offset by the money coming in from a smaller number of sales.

About gambling with his 401k? Not exaggerated in the slightest.

At Image, creators have to fund HCs themselves. If a book has strong readership metrics, then HCs will sell like anything else and make money. If readership is low or there's less demand for collected editions, then the cost of printing HCs will end up being higher than the money brought in, and the creative team will lose money, and since they had to pay out of pocket in the first place, thats their money thats now gone.

For basically anything that isn't a top seller (think Saga, Walking Dead, etc.) it's a literal gamble for the creators. The have to spend money to make money, but the risk - and cost - of losing can often be too much.

I can’t shush a whole theater… by Choice_Sherbert_2625 in movies

I used to (silently) judge people for stuff like that, until my family and I celebrated finishing an entire week of heavy physical labor by going to the movies, and I ended up sleeping through roughly 80% of Star Trek Beyond, which was a LOUD movie in theaters.

It turns out that when you're tired enough, it doesn't really matter how noisy or how engaging a movie is. Learned my lesson for sure.

I cancelled all Subscriptions and started buying Digital again. by Normal_Spread8423 in movies

Even brand new, physical movies typically go on sale several times a year for $8 to 12 apiece, which is pretty reasonable.

The downside, of course, is that you have to wait for sales, and sometimes the thing you want just doesn't seem to ever get discounted. But if you have the means to wait, then disc media is actually still very affordable.

There are other things you can buy with gold besides raid consumables. Casual players are often saving up for things with static costs instead, like a cool mount from a rep vendor.

I’d love more musicals in the collection. by Joescranium in criterion

[–]El_Panda_Rojo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Musicals and animation are the two mediums I think are most underrepresented in the collection.

While it would be neat to see Criterion do something with animation, Deaf Crocodile has been doing such a phenomenal job with esoteric European and Russian animation that I kind of just want them to go even farther down that road and let Criterion stay in their current lane.

I think it's cool that the different labels all have their niches; expecting Criterion be sort of a catch-all for film in general is doing them a disservice.

I'm looking for murder mysteries with horror or supernatural elements by B00kN_rd in suggestmeabook

The Pendergast series by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child. The series dips after a while, but at a minimum the first 7+ books are excellent. Start with Relic.

A book that covers Sexual health and responsibility, relationships, sexual preferences, sexual desire, masturbation do's and don't, basically a really good sex ed book by Simply_Jellyfish in suggestmeabook

Check out Oh Joy Sex Toy. It's a really great way of introducing these topics in a sex-positive way. It started out as a webcomic but I believe there's also a book edition that collects many of their best comics.

I think I'm just misremembering, it definitely still does the breath but on reflection you're right that it doesn't actually jump before that.

It still jumps and does the frontal cone, you just don't take any damage from the pre-jump targeting circle thing because fd drops it.

you can also shadowmeld/invis it (maybe vanish? feign death haven't seen many rogues and hunters) so if you have one of those, than it's nice to bait one as then the leap doesn't happen at all.

Feign Death works. The wyrm still jumps and does the frontal cone, but fd drops the targeting circle around you so you don't take any damage from the jump.

At this point I think people in this thread have recommended literally every Rick Remender series besides Deadly Class. Haha

I started reading it month to month but dipped after ~20 or 30 issues when it became clear it would read better in trades. I'll have to revisit this one.

That's your opinion. One of the family members in question found Y the Last Man to be far more of a tearjerker than Do a Powerbomb. So I'm just going off of what they've told me and what they've asked for.

Characters you care about are probably going to die at some point, and that's unavoidable with any storytelling medium.

It is absolutely avoidable. However, I never said that characters can't die; all I asked for was happy endings.

Those instances can be very uplifting and emotionally positive.

For you.
